Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Nice sunny day today, I just got off work and am heading for a short nap. Hopefully, out on the Bay this afternoon.

Jim, too bad I am so far away - I would buy those volunteer tomatoes off you... looks like the ones I planted may not make it.

Off to clean the guinea coop and the chick coop. Compost away coop poop, my garden needs it.

Beautiful Day Here....hope everyone enjoys the week end .... the young chicks are growing fast and waiting till they can all have layer feed before I open the door and let them move into the whole coop with others. Lookin good so far.

The gardens are really doing good...no comparison to the lousy ones last year.

Hey dustergrl thanks for the advice! I do have them in a coop which gets fairly warm during the day. I did a trial the other night, the chicks seemed happy in the morning, and the thermometer read 72 when I did morning chores at 5:30am. I'm going to see how they do tonight considering the temp is going to be around 57. GREAT sleeping weather for me, not so great for chicks lol

Thanks for the welcome message Celtic Chick! My chicks are in a brooder which is inside my chicken coop. They seem to be happy so I'm going to play it by ear! They are almost fully feathered so I think they will be comfortable at night. I really appreciate any and all advice!

Glad to help if I can. Feel free to ask away. Hopefully someone can give you an answer.

Which reminds me, Glarner, did anyone answer you on your egg question? I just happened to remember it now. Sorry.

I think you asked about how often do pullets lay? POL (point of lay) or newly laying hens will lay eggs sporadically with no schedule or routine (pattern) when they first start laying. Their bodies are still maturing & it takes a little while for them to get into the egg-laying cycle. So if you get some eggs for a few days in a row & then don't get any for a few days, it is not anything to worry about. They will be in full swing before you know it. It just takes a little time & your patience will be rewarded. HTH

Good morning, Wisconsinites!
I am in the La Crosse area and new to chickens. I have 3 EE and 1 RIR. They were supposed to be pullets, but I suspect one of the EEs is a roo. From looking through this thread, it seems that there are swaps, clubs and associations that are hosted regularly? If the no-crow collar I order doesn't work on my roo, I might have a rooster to rehome in this area. I see WI doesn't have a rooster rescue, and I'd prefer if this one doesn't end up in a Crock Pot (my daughter has become quite attached). Any ideas? I don't necessarily trust Craigslist. Thanks to all!!

and to the Cheesehead thread 45CM! I hope you like it here. I wish you well on rehoming your roo. I never heard of a no-crow collar before but I hope you didn't spend much on it.

CL really isn't all that bad if you use your best judgement. I had a few roos that I was hesitant to put on CL but I wound up finding some really good homes for them. I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. Good luck!

Everyone must be out enjoying the summer now that it is finally here. Glad to hear your garden is doing so well Bigz. The past few years haven't been kind for gardens. Even this spring was dicey with all the rain & cool temps.

Cind, best of luck to Jon & his upright boat.

Celtic Chick, thanks for your cheerleading! I did "network" at a graduation party today, throwing out that I have a young roo who needs rehoming.
Quote: I might try CL, but I would prefer Cupcake (aka Clyde) to go to a local home (and not to a Crock Pot, but I have no true control over that). Sure is a sweet bird (until the hormones kick in?). No chance of an EE roo doing well with 3 others the same age, huh? *Sigh* I will keep you posted. At least my 11 year old daughter (owner of the transgendered chicken) understands that we might need to rehome.

Oh, I have not purchased the No-Crow collar yet. I did some reading on ratios between hens and roosters. That sort of stopped me in my tracks (3 hens: 1 rooster = not necessarily good!).

It also depends on the rooster. I would keep mentioning him to others but also keep an eye on him to see how quickly he "matures". He might become a gentleman. Or possibly not. Are you in a city that you can only have 4 birds?

Hi All!

Yea, looks like another quiet day.

Jon couldn't sail back to Hawaii, He was just going to sail down the coast to San Fransisco. He had to fly back to run the shop while his boss took vacation. I have no idea when the boat is going to try again.

Nothing else new.... Night All!

I have not had a notification for days....thought everybody was sleeping. My son and I in our good ole Redneck way got the run and shed/coop ready for the young girls/and boy. They were quite traumatized. would not come out of the shed. We will put up roost for them today. I checked late yesterday and they were just venturing out into the run. I remember Jim told me that the roost needed to be for the top roost 1' away from the wall and the bottom 3'....my son said that did not make sense (no offense Jim) because no way was the tractor roost to those measurement.
Too many threads to recheck what Jim was saying especially since I missed quite a few from not getting notifications. Can you give me a reason why the roost have to be at these dimensions?

Hey bigz: Since you are so big into gardens, I have a decision to make.....I have a few boxes of peppers/tomaotoes/cabbage (not all together). Of my 8 tomato plants, two were affected by the cold snap back in May, even tho they were covered. One has revived the other appears to be in the Stop mode, no new leaves, no yellow leaves, not growing, just there. If it were you, would you pull it up and will chickens eat the greens of tomatoes, I already know they eat cabbage leaves.
