Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Started the fall harvest on the mushroom logs. Shiitake are pretty darn good. Largest one was 7.5 inches across. They sure smell bad when they are wet but the are soooo yummy. I dry the stems and put them through a coffee grinder then add a scoop to the jars of venison when I can them. Also yummy in stew.

YUM! Pictures of the mushroom logs, please!

Speaking of good fresh meat....I hit a deer this morning!! She wasn't huge but I'll get a decent amount of meat from her. It was either I eat it or a coyote.....and I hate coyotes!

I'm on board for a pig roast...the hardest part is the harvest..Camp has plenty big enough grill for a pig!

Aldi's sells fresh whole chickens for .95 lb.... that's the cheapest price you will find. When I raise the meaties...I'm done in 8 weeks....that's where the tender birds are born. Grow emfast and keep them young as possible to weight.

Yep...love the root crops here too.

My new pole pruner is a keeper...a lot of trees need the trim, and the big apple trees will be easy peasy to trim standing on the ground....I worked with it for prolly 20 minutes and it took 2 hours to clean up all the limbs....not even a good start yet to all the trimming that needs to be done. Stihl makes agood quality pro trimmer.

The plan was to have those birds done at 8 weeks but the boyfriend backed out on butchering so I ended up doing them alone. I butchered 10-12 one day then package them the next so I only butchered every other day or so and ended up paying for extra feed and bedding. Still $1.22 lb doesn't seem bad if the cheap birds are .95. I was very happy with the pullets...no bowed legs, heart attacks or breast blisters. And even though it was a very tight fit on some, I got them all into the vacuum bags for freezing.

Is that the Stihl powerhead that takes different attachments? We got one last spring and love it. I'm not quite strong enough to control the mini tiller but used the string trimmer all summer and ran a tank of gas on the pole pruner. Just think how easy it will be for you to cut shooting lanes now!

Hope you didn't get hurt or damage your car too much!

Just an FYI. The fur price prediction for this season on coyotes is up...$30. Almost worth it to hunt/trap them again.

I would take eating a deer over eating a coyote any day ,,

I got a call at about 7 this morning,, Nephew hit a small deer with his truck.. Says it looks like it died of fright .. no apparent damage .. He doesn't want to mess with it so he is bringing it to me,,

only problem is it happens that I have our water shut off and have to replace a bad pipe.. AND it is raining outside.. looks like a long day coming up..

Huntress, doing 12 chickens in one day by yourself is not a small deal.. I can appreciate your effort..
for a couple of weeks you should tell the BF that you are "too tired"
and "back hurts from doing all those chickens" etc etc

Rainy day here today....nice to see the Royals win the first game in the World Series. The 3rd base coach is from my home town and went to school with him. I think he will be a head coach before long.

Nice price on the yote hides huntress...that should be reason enough to go trapping. Plenty of them around.

My pruner is just a pole pruner, extends to almost 12'.... http://www.stihlusa.com/products/pole-pruners/professional-pole-pruners/ht131/ should of had it years ago.

Pork steak and kraut tonight, with baked potatoes and winter squash.

good evening, .

my day went like this :

bro Dave brought Bambi here for me .. we skinned and gutted him and now he is hanging in the garage.

after that quick chore we started on the plumbing project,,

It took two 20 mile round trips to Homdepo to end up with the correct fittings.. we spent more time traveling than plumbing..

now the job is done.. tomorrow I will cut up Bambi and get him into the freezer..

Annie just called me from Mosinee.. it is snowing there.. she said her car windshield is covered ..

That's the 5th deer I've had an encounter with in the last 2 months. All the other ones dented my truck and ran off so I was due to get to keep one. It's a Bambi like jims but it'll sure be tasty. Time to get ready for work!
