Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

good morning..
the teacher came and picked up 2 doz eggs..now I am going to start saving those eggs for myself.. those hens all are laying large eggs. can hardly shut the carton..

I tested 2 eggs for fertility. one was a yes, the other was doubtful.. that's good enough for me for this time of the year..

the last goose egg in the bator is due today.. not looking good
BUT the geese are starting to lay again.. I hope they do not go and hide their eggs.. I found one in the hay stack right in plain view.

Annie told me this morning that she wants to bleach all 3 bators
I am glad that SHE wants to do it.. LOL

I am going to go ahead and set them all up for temp and humidity .. one is done already, 2 to go..

I have to find some door seal for the old 1202,, I put some on last year, but it is that soft white stuff for storm doors.. didn't hold up at all.. I might have to break down and order some from GQF unless somebody knows where I can get some of that hard black seal..

then I am going to work of the plastic egg holders.. I think I can modify some of them so that I can stack them in the bators.. If my theory is correct, I will be able to incubate an extra 18 doz in at least 2 of the bators.. that will come in handy when the guineas start to lay..
(18 plus 24 = 42) times 12= 504 eggs per bator times 2= 1008
plus 288= 1296 total for all 3 bators..

Is it possible to catch a cold via the internet.. I think I got every else's cold... bleh Sore throat to full blown cold in less than 17 hours.
The "house" hens are doing well, they aren't moving around very much, still settling in. They make the funniest noises when getting ready to roost.

So... are some people just so stubborn that you want to seriously smack them...

I went out to the barn to get my truck, as we don't have the extra cash to get a starter for my car. I had to back out and then reposition the trailer attached to my truck, so the handyman
who keeps some stuff and a trailer frame needed to move the frame with his truck.
Long story short, he got his truck stuck, its a 2wd....he got his really big snow blower out to snow blow around his truck, he has ramps nearby.. did he put it in the back to give more weight over
the axles.. no.... did he come in and ask for help or for me to pull him out (my truck is a 4x4)... NO...
So finally after watching him for quite some time, I need to leave, so pull up near him and walk up to the truck. Offer my help, which he immediately accepts, in less than 2 minutes he has
been pulled out of the snow, leaving HUGE holes in the grass, my stock trailer's front is covered in snow and mud...
And not once did he come in to ask for help. Although afterwards he said he wasted a tank of gas, and my barn owner said that he probably took a few layers of rubber off his tires too.

Sigh...

jim dont you just crack the eggs to look for fertility? ya you cant hatch them then but you can eat them. Why I ask is you said something about putting them in the 'bator to check for fertility?
hu.gif
when I crack the eggs open for eating I sometimes take note. I'll pay close attention to this weeks eggs cause I'm going to save next weeks eggs!

oh and I'm interested in your egg math there Jim. How do you put your eggs in your bator? and do you turn them? and how?

What a wonderful warm Wednesday! Hope everyone is able to get outside, even just a little bit. Lots of green showing in the yard, yay!!

Here's a shameless plug. I submitted a pic of our dog in a photo contest by Bissell. If he is a finalist or wins, I get to pick an animal charity for them to donate up to $10K to

Dr Ha Ha, you got pics of Peatwo and Btwo? I'd really like to see.

Buck Creek Chickens, you got a link on the swaps this year???

What a great day to be alive!

It is fantastic out there!!! (and I am in here...) We are figuring out the bator cause I almost have enough eggs to fill it now. Not as many as Jim though!!!
ep.gif
Holy Cow..that is a lot of eggs!!! You sell all that stuff or just keep 'em around?
OK I actually just came on here to ask RAIMNEL how she does the fans...later! Terri O

It was a fine day outside.. I did not get to spend much time out there.. Annie had to go visit somebody in the hospital, so I was stuck inside watching Mom..today she was riding in a streetcar with somebody's white cat.. I gave her a glass of wine to calm her down, and then she started singing Christmas carols.. LOL
She wondered if Mr Kellogg sent her a card.. He has been dead for about 30 years.. and that is how my day goes around here..

I put the eggs into the bator for 4 days.. then I know that they are good if I find that little piece of snot hanging on the yolk.LOL

I did manage to get one of the egg trays customized.. It went even better than I thought.. for the middle and bottom racks, I had to remove only the stacking posts from the top tray.. that allows me 24 more eggs for each of the middle and bottom rack. for the top rack I still have to remove the outside row on each side.. so add 48 to 1296 and we end up with 1344 eggs..

I might not stack them, but if I have to I will be ready..
last year I kept all 3 bators going all summer..

I sell most of what I hatch.. I only keep and butcher certain meat chickens and whatever doesn't sell.. last year we ended up butchering 71 muscovy ducks.. I am going to be more careful this year.. LOL

last year and the year before, I sold over 300 guinea keets each year..

then , I have a guy who brings me 300 eggs at a time to hatch..

I am going to go heavy on chickns this year.. I want to get a ton of Delaware pullets.. The Del roosters I will butcher..

I have sportsmans bators, Raimnel, and the whole rack tilts from side to side.. there are 3 racks in there..

I can take photos , but I cannot post them yet..
My new computer is hooked up, but I need somebody to show me how to use it.. maybe I will just figure out how to turn it on and have a go at it..eh?

GRRRRRRR Darn, Lazy, Big, Fat, Freeloaders!!!

I am getting so sick of going to check on the chickens and still NO EGGS! WTH! I have three 27 week old Buff Orpingtons, two 25 week EEs, three 24 week EEs, five 20 week old bantams, and an Olive Egger and a BCM that are 18 weeks and still nothing!

I don't know what else to try. They have artificial lighting on a timer, they have available food, water, and oyster shell and are spoiled rotten in a huge heated "coop." I just don't know what else to do. I'm so sick of going and buying eggs when I have all these fatties sitting around pigging out and not laying ANYTHING! Plus I have family that are waiting to buy eggs from me. They have all the signs of laying, red combs, squatting, the right age, but still nothing. I'm hearing about all these other people getting eggs now that spring is getting closer but nothing from my lazy flock.
