Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good evening everyone! Just got back from work...been busy today, picking up plywood, getting my sewing machine from the repair guy and going to Whitewater to meet Cinlady! We had a nice talk sitting in the back of my car in the sun...oh that felt great! So I have myself a new little turkenX Roo. He is in my quarantine kennel right now and seems pretty happy. Gotta get some meat on his little bones before setting him loose out there!

I cracked all the button eggs in the bator. Good and bad news...All were dead; there were 5 that were nearly ready to hatch...not shrink wrapped very moist. THere were 4 that were clear and 3 that were quitters. I am wondering what happened and if the temp changes were the problem? I am revamping the bator and will set some chicken and guinea eggs when I have it ready.

I had another thing happen today...I went in the coop and my silkieX was sitting with her eyes half shut. I picked her up and noticed that she had swelling on either side of her neck right under her beak. I started moving it around and then could see something in her mouth. IT looked like the stuff that is in the body when you do a necropsy and the bird was an internal layer! I worked it up and out of her mouth and had 2 marble sized lumps and another smaller one. IT didnt really stink...there was a little blood and I though I had lost her cause her head was kind of lolling to the side. I set her down and dribbled a little water into her beak and she perked up and then went and started eating scratch like nothing was wrong! I am wondering how she will be tomorrow! Has anyone ever heard of this? I am going to post this in the emergencies section too and see if anyone there has ever experienced it; it was TOO weird!

So BCC--who has a TRAIN TRACK by their mailbox? I read your post a few times and I still am picturing a train coming down the road! Is he OK? He was in the car and got hit? I am so confused!

BigZ--I like Susie's present for V-Day! I didnt get anything...but I didnt buy anything either! (except a few candy hearts for the table) We had a very "romantic" dinner of hamburgers on the George Foreman and then I went to work! THat venison Jerky sounds fabulous!!! I saw a beef flank steak in the store the other day and was thinking about making some jerky...you are right, once you get started in it, it disappears really fast! Please bring some to the meet...just make sure it doesnt have any gluten in it so I can try some too! (please?

I am glad that you are enjoying the book BL4! You will do it much more justice than I for sure! Post a pic of your son's birthday cake! I would love to see which one you pick. Congrats to your DH Susie! I hope mine finds something soon!
Okay...now I am heading off to bed--tomorrow is Loooong Tuesday! Sweet dreams! Terri O

finally tricked Mom into going to bed.. so the rest of the night is mine.. right now it is miller time.. in a little while it is going to be miller time again..

we broke 3 records today.. the new hens went over the half laying mark.. 8 out of 15.. overall we collected 24 eggs, 2 more than yesterday.. I think my little Ukokei layed and egg,, maybe not, but she was the last one in the nest tonight.. AND the geese are starting to lay.. found a fresh egg #1 in the hay pile ..
looks like a Toulouse..

for our valentines day, Annie went to work overnight, and I am staying home with Mom...// most of you don't know Mom.. she is my Mom and she moved in with us 5 years ago.. she is 96 and totally blind.. but as heathy otherwise as any other old lady..

T.O. I am so glad you like Turk! I do think he'll be a nice bird when grows up and fills out! Maybe if he can't see hens for awhile he'll eat better! I think he was just too distracted by them here because he could see them but not get to them. I think he'll be pretty big too... by the looks of his legs. He just needs a little more time to be babied! LOL The hens did go looking for him though.... but they'll get over it.

Great news Susie! Hope he'll be happy there!

Congrats to everyone with new babies (chickies)!Maybe next year I can hatch some

We had more snow here than most of you so the run still has snow. I laied straw on it for the girls but they just stuck their heads out and looked at me like "your kidding right?" So, maybe by tomorrow enough snow will be gone that they will go out!

I hope we get enough dry weather with this warm spell (suppose to have showers for a few days) that I can get out and burn off the garden! We just moved here in OCT. and didn't have time to do it. The people that lived here before left allot in it and there were tomatoes EVERYWHERE!!!!

We had lamb chops, spinach and curry noddles for our V-day dinner... DH was suppose to get a 1/2 day off but they got too busy and it didn't happen

Good Morning All! Our Vday was spent at home too. Spagetti with L's marinara.

The contractor said when he was about done "boy that's a lot of work". He knows I'm doing most of it but I promised him the bathroom for doing the estimate. Then he told me plumbing was not his strong suit.
th.gif
So now I'm thinking he can do the sub floors and I'll either do the bathroom myself or get a plumber in. Really don't like the idea of crawling around down there on my hands and knees. Plumbing is not my strong suit either. Jim good for you to take your mom in. That's seldom easy. TO that's too bad about your quail but now you have a new addition. S"J" that's great news about the DH!!!! bl4 you couldn't get me in a kayak, don't like low sided boats either. I've seen too many big muskies.

otonoh they always say that raising chickens is cheap which is true but that's only if you already have an existing coop. I hate to think of what I have in the remodel of my shed turned coop. But know this it's worth every penny. I'm with ya 100% Bigz that kind of money can be spent in a more lasting manner. But it's all about being happy, so if that's what you like go for it! 5 course meal for me is a burger off the grill and 4 beers. Pretty crude huh? Went to put the kids to bed last night P and Btwo were the last ones in. They went right to their now open appartment and Peatwo mounted Btwo of course she squawked and that got Buster upset and he flew off the roost and mounted her then Peatwo went after him for messin with his woman. What a circus! But they all got along all day yesterday. Btwo seems to be leading the way she laid in a nest box and she was trying out the big girl roost. Tried one L's Claritins yesterday morning, brain wouldn't shut off. Slept like crap. Maybe a nap today.

Good morning! That dinner sounds YUMMY Cin! I really need to get a lamb born so I can have more of that tasty meat in my freezer! I mentioned to DH yesterday that I was planning on raising more Oppyland's Happy Pork and he said "good idea."
wee.gif
Now I just have to find some wee little piggies! Lots of work, but man is that pork tasty!

27* out there right now--not supposed to be as warm as yesterday but Thursday will be fantastic! I was going to say that I would join you riding Carol (or Becky) but my trailer is down in the pasture in a big drift! DH thought it would be a good idea to park it down there so there was more driveway space...not next year!

Well I think I am going to cook some hot cereal for breakfast...I have to work in the kitchen today and it is terrible when you cant taste everything and hungry to boot!
Have a fantastic day! Terri O

ETA: Jim, your life sounds like my job! I am glad I can come home on some days...

the train track crosses his driveway, so of course no lights or anything, they are supposed to blow the horn all through that area ( a few driveways cross the tracks ) and the train hit him, the truck is totaled got hit twice, he has broken ribs, sprained ankle, cuts, bruises. when he was thrown out of the truck his head landed less than 18" from the tracks as the train was going past, it has changed his outlook on life though, if he wants a fish lunch on fri he's going to get it, instead of saving the money.

Morning ALL!
DH is home sick again, he has an appt. with his Dr. He is sleeping now.
I'm not sure if any have checked the chicken illness sub forum.... here is the short version
On our local CL, sunday night some one posted two free bantam hens, saw the pic buff brahmas. Called the number, I was 2nd in line. Got a call yesterday, 1st person was a no show, can I pick them up.
Sure! driving them out to the barn and I hear "Hurrrrr, Hurrrrrr"... definite URI. I keep them in the box, go to the barn get food, antibiotics, have a cuppa with my Barn owner..
Head home, they are currently living in my old computer room/small walk in closet sized room. They have a lot of room, and a
I called the guy who gave them to me, he sounded clueless. He had only had 5 chickens, lost 2 to predators, 1 "died for no reason".. (well now we know why)...
So I have house chickens again.
Any idea how long this could last? I am thinking 1 has it now, the other isn't showing symptoms yet. SHould I keep them here a month?

And then a month of QT? before introducing them to the flock? so 2 months total??

Let me know.
Carol

good morning all, have to get ready to go to St Pont, so This will be short..

I learned how to kayak while in Florida.. My nephew brought two of his kayaks and we went out for all afternoon.. the Gulf was way too choppy so we headed inland and found some long channels and lagoons.. Perfect training ground for a complete novice, eh? did I mention we saw aligators all day long? I never tipped over, not even once..LOL

Carol, I had that chicken respiratory problem a couple of years ago from 4 black hens I bought from a livestock dealer.. If I had to do it over, I would kill them right away before my home flock became infected.. but that is just me.. I lost a lot of my home flock, plus a few turkeys thrown in for good measure..

this is why I do my own hatching, mostly, now....

jim I had to buy the PC fans and the a/c adaptors this time around. there about $10 a piece. still cheaper than buying an incubator with fan and all!
For valentines day I usually make supper real special. we had festivals burgandy pepper beef steaks with brocolli and "baked potatoe" mashed potatoes with choc covered strawberrys and bananas. I of course had to buy a new center piece lol (well all the pieces and put one together) and also my usual of small choc boxes for each kids and small stuffed animal and something small for DH and DH bought a balloon and flowers. I love having candle light dinners. it was so cute as I was finishing up supper the kids set the table with our fine china and then made little valentine hearts for me and DH, placing them on our plates. even my DS13 got into the action by placing a "jewel" heart and diamond on our plates. (little plastic ones that I have around the candles in the center piece) it was very nice. I love valentines day but don't like spending it out without the kids. They need to see our love afterall THIS is what it is all about.

ok I am so sick of Dora (the explorer) I could puke! I think this dvd will disappear! Is it weird that my DD3 can run the dvd player? lol my DS7 loves to cook! he makes the yummiest things! like his very own egg sandwich! lol complete with SEPARATING the eggs (he don't like the yolks) bacon bits, cheese in a toasted english muffin! Mmmmm! show them ones and they got it!
later
