Sorry about the Badgers loss, Jim.

I am having an issue with broken and poopy eggs in the nest boxes. I use hay in the nest boxes, but I have a hen that is pretty vigorous in rearranging the nest so she can lay and ends up cracking the eggs. Those Sagittas are pretty hefty hens, so when they step all over the eggs I get broken ones. There are 6 nest boxes for 12 hens and they will all lay in the same one! Once in a while, they will split it up and put one or two eggs in another nest box.

I use wood flake in the coop and the silly birds keep scratching it all to the corners. Every day I rake it back to cover the concrete floor. Only 4 or 5 birds use the roost - about 4 roost on the ramp, one roosts on the handle of the feed trough, and the rest on top of the nest boxes. With all those birds roosting on flat surfaces, there is a lot of chit getting stepped on.

good morning,

yah,, the badgers managed to give up a 3 score lead and lose. they are prime candidates for the Packers.

I have 10 nest boxes. same deal here.. they all want to use the second one from the left. I have seen as many as 4 hens in there at one time..

I am thinking of building a feeder trough on legs.
the thing that concerns me is that some of them might roost on it .. I have 32 feet of roosts in there. most of them use it.. what I hate the most are the ones that sit on the front edge of the nests and chit into the nest . can't they face the other way ??
thankfully they usually pick one that is not used for laying.

Tough loss for the badgers...I disliked the bias play callers....they had nothing but praise for penn state even when they were behind. Bias announcers are worse than watching your team lose.

GO PACK!

Yah, I noticed how excited they got every time Penn make a pass or a good run. when the badgers did it, it was like,,Ho Hum..
but then you have to consider the mentality of those guys.
If they had a brain, they would go get a real job..

That type of pie is called a rustic or galette pie. Sounds yummy! Even better since I did not have to make it!

Loving the snow; makes it feel like Christmas. Picked up the tree yesterday, spent today decorating it. :)

If I go to all the work of making pie, I prefer slab instead of traditional. Looks like a pie, shaped like a bar so you get a ton of them out of a sheet pan. Little to no waste on time making crust pretty either. Roll it out in a rectangle, roll other out in a rectangle, slap apples between and tuck it in. I am sure some cut small pieces out of it, but we do ones the size of my palm or bigger. If you're gonna eat pie....
Which reminds me, my neighbor offered me lard.

good morning,

when my mother baked a pie it was not traditional either.
she would take a rectangular cake pan, put the apple pie filling into it and then make a crust to fit over the top.
no bottom crust.
way too sweet and lots of cinnamon. YUmmmmm..

I have 8 ceiling tiles to replace in the chicken coop.
going to be a dirty, dusty, itchy nasT job.
I took a shower and put on all clean clothes this morning.
that will be my excuse for not doing it today..

Instead of ceiling tiles, I am thinking of making wooden strips instead. still thinking on that ..

there is a black chicken hiding in the garage. I suppose she doesn't want to walk through the snow to get to the coop..
I guess my goal today will be to catch her..

I wish my neighbor would offer me lard. Great for pie crust! Almost time to start cranking out the cookies. Usually end up making 5 or 6 batches of sugar cookies and a batch of peanut butter blossoms (with the Hershey kisses in them). Still haven't smoked the turkey for the year. Hubby better get the d**m smoker fixed soon, OR ELSE. LOL
