Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

My chickens are refusing to leave the coop - not stepping in the white stuff at all.
The melting snow and rainfall has saturated the ramp for the barn and is seeping through the walls and into the barn. Now the coop is damp and I think I saw some frosty combs this morning. I wish the Sagitta's had small/rose combs, I like those birds but I had to deal with frostbite last winter...

EDITTED FOR JIM - Sorry, but I can't get this text to go larger.

thanks.
It's not that I can't see the small print, It just takes me about twice as long to read.
at least someone is posting.

how / where did you get your Sagitas ?

I was told that Sagitas are hybrid.

I got some eggs and hatched them, therefore mine are not really Sagitas. just first generation offspring.

for a short week it's sure dragging on. Looking forward to the 4 day weekend. Tested out my electric pressure cooker I got for Christmas last night. Boy that's slick. I made a corned beef brisket in 80 minutes and it was soooo tender. Beats waiting 6+ hours in the crock pot. Already looking at chicks for the spring. I can't wait for warmer weather and spring time because that means new chicks for this guy. Still eyeing up some blue laced red Wyandottes. There's someone on our thread that has the most beautiful ones I've seen, I believe she's by Green Bay but I can't remember who for the life of me. Maybe I'll get lucky and she'll post sometime between now and then. Got dishes done, garbage burned, critter chores done. Now to get quotes on the truck for that little deer mishap Christmas Eve.

good morning,

Annie has one of those electric pressure cookers. She hardly ever uses it. She is so used to cooking her way, I think she forgets she has it.

good wednesday afternoon,
I took cuttings from one of the apple trees today.
have about 50 scions sticking in the potting soil.
I will take cuttings from the other apple tree after I get to F&F for more peat moss and perlite.

Good evening

Hope all had a great xmas!

Has been awhile since I last checked in.
All is well. Lot of work....very little play.
Chickens are doing great & loving the warm temps. Don't go into the coop until the very last minutes of daylight.
I have a woodboiler so they love the ash dusting area I have for them.

Currently have 8 hens/pullets & 1 cockerel. Will make a decision on the cockerel in the next few weeks.
Most likely headed for the freezer.

One Brahma hen, 5 mutts, and 2 meaties. The 2 meat birds were to small back in sept. when we butchered.
They are both laying, going to roost, and ranging with the others. Not counting on them long term...hence
the likelihood the cockerel heads for the freezer. That would put us at 6 hens, which is plenty for us. Current pace of 5-6 eggs/day
is a little high for us. Since Brahma has raised most of them, she is the queen...which makes for a docile group.

Heres to a great 2017!! May be a little greedy to wish for a Lombardi to start the year!

Jim, what internet browser do you use? There is a way to enlarge the text size for all of your web pages just by making an adjustment in your browser settings. That way you do not have to rely on everyone to write in large text sizes.

Pretty boring here; made about 13 dozen cookies for Christmas which were inhaled by the 14 yr old DS (I did manage to get some to the neighbors house). New neighbors moved in but have not really seen them too much, all we really know is that they have a little dog.

Looking forward to Spring, and trying to figure out where the hubs and I should head this year on a trip. Thought about going the Glacier, but with 14 miles of the main road going to be under construction, I will plan on that for next year. Perhaps we will head out the the Grand Canyon.........

counting down the hours.

it was quite balmy out this morning when I fed the birds.
but that took a nose dive. went out for breakfast and gas.
that wind can shred the hide off of you.

I was going to push some of the chunks off of the parking area, but forget that. I can wait until spring if this cold weather keeps up.

I bought some more peat moss and perlite . have enough to mix up at least two batches of rooting mix.

have to go cut a bunch of scions off of the other apple tree.
then call my friend and neighbor and see if I can get some scions off of his pear tree..

good evening,

I just came down to turn off the puter.

I did get outside , and I did cut a nice bunch of scions off of the other apple tree. I have them in water overnight.

those trees are really in bad shape.

I hope the scions take root . and I hope the trees hold out until the replacements are producing.

I should have done this many years ago.
