Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I got a call last night about a car hit eagle. By the time I arrived he was dead. He won't go to waste though. The local Chippewa tribe will use him for ceremonies. I thought that was kind of cool. I looked online and there's a place where they can order eagles and eagle parts. It's a 2 year wait for a whole bird.

Very interesting,
I wonder, how did the indians get the eagles before there were road kills ?

Dang bl4, that kinda sucks that working successors weren't already in line to keep the ship sailing. The transition of new owners coulda been in place when she was aware of the health issues....guess that's just me and how I would be concerned for all the employees. Not judging, Just Sayin is all.

Good thing the majestic bird isn't being wasted...prolly where the one in Kaukauna ended up too.

Went to Nueske's yesterday for their bacon sale.....triple cut Applewood smoked bacon for $3.19 lb sold in 5lb packages....beautiful stuff about the thickness of side pork....my blt's were to die for yesterday.....some folks were really buying a lot of it....prolly gonna give it to their deserving children. I put mine up in packages of 6 slices each for the freezer. They tipped the scale over 13 ozs each...plenty for two people and will be wonderful in my southwestern beans.

BigZ I completely agree. No relatives to take over and no plan in place. She was sick for over a year and knew her time was short. Left her employees high and dry.

Obit is posted on the web site for the funeral home in Fremont.

no one can come even remotely close to nueskes bacon. I'm about due for a trip there myself. I love their corned beef hash too. The time for feeder hogs is nearing and I get more excited every day. I know I work at a processing plant part time but I think I'm gonna spread out where I take my pigs to get butchered. One to maplewoods and one to kropfs and the third to be determined yet. I wonder if nueskes does slaughter and processing ...?

Thanks bl4, I'm gonna check it out. I saw and talked to her once a week for almost 30 years.

They of course do their own hogs cw, but don't think they process for the public....pond hill processing is just east of Nueske's on the same road....turns into cty Q...they do chickens too.

Hi all,

you can mark this down in the record books.
I have officially caught a head cold. something quite rare for
me.

after the 10 o'clock news, I will drink a hot beer.
that should help me sleep.

got 18 eggs today.

the snow is melting good. I am sure glad I made that granite
walkway to the chicken coop. no muddy feet for me.

Next winter there will be no chickens in the coop.
there are lots of people who I can buy eggs from.

IDK if I will keep the pair of geese or not. If the guineas make it
through the summer, I will keep them. but I can feed them anywhere outside.

Good word did that wind and snow pick up in a hurry. Thought about it and I'm gonna take that day job. It'll be so nice to have a normal routine and life. And to be able to sleep at night when it's dark out. Kinda sad I won't be at the meat plant anymore but working that job 20 hours a week plus up to 60 a week I'm third shift is wearing me thin. It'll be nice to just have one job.

good snowing lightly morning,

good luck on the new job .
just don't burn your bridges behind you.
maybe in the future you might want to pick up a few extra hours

I used to be a baker at Dixie Creme donut shop.
I gave up that job on good terms, a couple of years later,
I went back part time on weekends to make a few bucks.

Anybody have any luck planting walnut trees - and getting walnuts off of them? The description says good to zone 4 and I am in Zone 5, so I have hopes of success. Ordered 2 Black Walnut and 2 English Walnut. The English Walnut are supposed to start producing in 3-4 years, I am guessing the Black Walnut will be a while longer than that. Hopefully they produce before we are gone, lol.

Ordered seeds from Gurneys last night. With the $50 off of a $100 purchase, my shipping was free and I still got $25 off my order. Hopefully the trees will survive.

Good luck on the new job @corewassen87 . Working a regular shift should be a nice change for you. It is much easier on the body and soul. It is nice to be able to go fishing and do fun stuff with the hubs. It can hit the pocketbook though, night-shift work is usually a higher pay - but that's cause nobody likes it.

good not quite noon.

I have about 80 black walnuts trees that I planted from seedlings. they are very slow growing,
don't be surprised if it takes ten years or more for nuts.

Plant the black walnut trees in an area by themselves.
their roots will kill just about any tree close to them,
Pine trees don't seem to be affected,
here is a list of trees that I lost to them:
apple, cherry, oak, butternut, asparagus,hazelnut.
blackberries seem to tolerate them,

also, the lawn is not very lush under those trees.
that might be due in part to the shade..

the young trees might have to be staked.
the foilage makes them top heavy and could make the tree bend over. I had that happen to a tree that had a 4 inch trunk.
It grew like that for a few years, . last summer I cut it down because I couldn't ride under the leafy top with the lawn mower..

watch for ground shoots from the roots. If you have a double trunk, cut one out asap.

I trimmed all the branches up to about 10 or 12 feet after the trees were about 20 feet tall.

lots of branches will die, dry up and fall off as the tree gets taller.

good luck.

btw, I planted 100 of them, I have about 80 left .
