Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Race Day Sunday to all. Went to early church this morning and we had a bat flying around all service. Kinda funny watching everyone duck down when it flew past them, including me a couple times.

Jim had a mushroom kit before. Not sure where it came from, but he said that he had plenty of fresh mushrooms....I'm not sure, but one kit might provide enough?

Suzie is not liking the new Nascar rules....I don't mind them and think it's a good idea.

Does anyone have or know of Buff Leghorns???
Nope, but this may be helpful. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/625966/brown-leghorns-pics-info-and-resources

Morning all. Weather is downright balmy, about time but I know it won't last. Hubby got my plant stands for the farm starts built and while we were looking at lights at Menards we found a Sorry slip next to the more expensive LED so that we knocked off more money on each one. Pretty slick. Will post a photo this afternoon, it is quite to stand. Hens are back to producing more like they were last fall and was thinking of giving them some black sunflower seeds as a treat. Bags were on sale at Marathon T&C so I splurged while I was there picking up oyster shell. The man at the counter was not very helpful, couldn't tell me why I should buy one bag over another so I just took a guess and bought one. One month to baby chicks and counting.

Just gave the girls a pine apple and a watermelon for a treat. They're really doing a number on them. I cut them in 6ths so so they can all have their own piece. It was funny because they were really unsure about the pineapple right away. Prolly a touch sour at first but they're diggin it now. Good rainy day to catch up on some sleep. Had a long night at work but now I only have one more Sunday night before I go on first. Friday's and Sunday's are the worst on third shift so as the 20th nears I'm sure I'll drive you all nutty out of excitement

Yep, that's kinda funny how the chickens won't eat something they aren't familiar with, until one tries it and likes it, then everyone else joins in and wants some.

Usually everyone buys boss, (black oil sunflower seeds) however the birds like the stripped too. Either variety becomes a favorite treat....I mix them with the scratch grains, to stretch the bag out for a longer time.

I mix 40-pound bag of cracked corn, a 40-pound bag of oats, and a 50-pound bag of BOSS for treats. The sunflower seeds are the first to get picked up.
I am going to try to grow sunflowers and save the seed heads for a winter treat for next year. Since they decided that they will not step in snow, they have had cabin-fever pretty bad all winter.

Core, I grow mushrooms on logs that I have inoculated myself. I have had a couple of the table top kits. They produce a nice amount of mushrooms, but for the money you can grow a lot more on the logs. I have always gotten mine from Field and Forest. Check out their site. They are Wisconsin based and super helpful. I grow the shiitake and we had over half a freezer full for this winter. Still have a third left and gave tons to friends. Plus, the logs are already trying to produce again. The kits don't last long but the logs can produce up to 5 years.

Hello fellow cheese heads. First time chicken mommy here in sauk co! Rescued my first batch late fall. So far so good. Lost I think 4 mostly to predatorsee so currently I have 17. Would like to get meat chickens and maybe a few other breeds as chicks in the spring. When is a good time to get them? TIA!

welcome to the cheeseheads! I did my meatbirds around the end of April/ beginning of May. That way they could find some food when I moved the tractor. Meat birds tolerate cool weather much better than the heat so spring or fall is best imo. As far as layers almost anytime now on I'd say because they'll need heat for about 6 weeks anyways and by then it'll be plenty warm out and they'll be feathered out enough to tolerate anything else Mother Nature throws at us this spring.

Welcome! Good for you for rescuing! You got some great advice from CW.
