Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Dang chilly bite in the air here today. Good to hear you got your spring back in your step Jim!

Kropf's meats keeps your venzun separate and processes it separate from others...I know that for sure.

Been swinging the saw the last couple days...feels good to actually get out and get some work accomplished.

I still have a lot of wood to cut, split, and haul...then pile to cure.

corey, brent just changed out his boiler. it is wood fired..

about muchrooms. A long time ago we bought a box of compost inoculated with button mushroom spore. I think it came from Guerney's. we had mushrooms all winter from that box.
IDK if you can buy just the spore ? have to look that up on Amazon..

got hair cuts today. was feeling pretty good when we left for town. kind of tired us out. stamina is coming back, though.

bought chicken feed. still in the car. too cold to unload it today.

Ollie turned over just fine, but the choke cable is frozen up.
when it gets warm again, I am going to buy a new cable..
I'm done messing around with this one.

many of the hens will be re-homed as soon as the weather gets above freezing.

next Tuesday we will be getting a new resident in our group home. a 50ish year old man.

I wonder if enough mushrooms grow to make it worth while for canning

I just spent over an hour on utube reading and listening about mushroom growing.

On Amazon you can get 25 grams of spore which equals about
1 000 000 spores .. cost from $5.oo to $16.oo.

all you need is a bed of about 4 square feet of compost.

One of the utubes mentioned chicken manure/compost ..

a place in your basement where the temp is about 60F.

You can also manufacture your own spores from over ripe mushrooms.

once you get the hang of growing mushrooms, I can see no reason why you couldn't raise enough to can ..

Anyone know of a breeder in WI that might let some less that perfect Swedish Black hens go at reasonable price? I can't keep roosters so not looking for breeding stock, just like unique birds for the laying flock.

Last year I got some hatching eggs of another breed from a guy in New London who I thought had Ayam Cemani but lost his contact info..... sure there are others.

Just looking for 1-2 backyard pets and some fresh blood for the flock, most of the girls are going to be 2yo this year and are still treating us well but figure adding some younger birds will help keep the egg supply stable long term.

Svart Hona are on my wishlist too, if anyone in state has some please let me know.

Ok, yes you can buy just the spore. Go to Field and Forest and check out what they have. We grow enough shiitake from our logs to keep 3 families in mushrooms year round. They have lots of different varieties you can choose from. The shiitake can get as big as a slice of bread so each one goes a long way. If you inoculate on straw or sawdust you will need to do so yearly. Those that will grow on logs last for several years before you have to invest in new spore. I haven't bought mushrooms in about 5-6 years. I also know for sure that those we eat have no nasty additives. Between the shiitake and the fall chicken and hen of the woods we have half a chest freezer full of shrooms every winter.

I checked it out the other day when you posted about it. They have a pile of stuff for it. I'm definitely gonna get something started soon. I'm sure I'll be full of annoying questions until I have a idea what the heck I'm doing.
