Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Wyo, rhubarb doesn't take a lot of care.
some manure at the end of the growing season once in awhile, or compost.
what I do when I am cutting some, is I pull the stalk loose, then chop off the big leaves. I lay the leaves along side the plants for weed control. when I mow the grass, I make sure to blow the clippings away from the rhubarb to keep it clean. The leaves kind of paste themselves to the ground so the lawn mower doesn't pick them up when I mow..
when I had chickens, they picked my rhubarb patch for their dusting bowl. wiped out half of the plants. I bought a few plants from a local guy and re established the patch..
Nothing green around here yet. had a real good snow cover until it rained the other night..
a long time ago my neighbor gave me some Jerusalem artichokes.. I have been trying to eradicate them for 30 years. they come up in the rhubarb patch and I pull them out. and then they come back if I don't get every fiber of root. If somebody offers Jerusalem artichokes, don't accept them,

we tried them once. thought they were bitter.
maybe we cooked them wrong ??
They are invasive, so plant them away from everything.
If you try to plow them under, they will come up wherever you plowed.
they get stalky, like sunflowers. I had them in my grapes, and raspberries.. I mowed the whole raspberry patch down and kept mowing it. I think the artichokes are gone from there.. this year I am going to not mow and watch the area very closely..
I hope the raspberries do come back..
the tubers are small. at least mine were..
kind of like cat tail tubers..

Sorry I have been MIA for awhile everyone. Non stop busy. Lots of overtime at Walmart. I had to run Don to Elkhorn to renew his ID. Got his tax refund but realized his ID was expired. In Walworth county they are only renewing driver licenses at the DMV and only the person who needs it can go in. I went in with Don and one worker asked another if I was allowed in there. He said that he guessed so if someone comes in with a parent. I have gray hair and they must have thought I was his mother. *LOL*

I also went to the hardware store on Thursday. I was trying to decide if I wanted 1 or 2 more. I asked Don if I could get 3 and he said ok. I came home with 5. I asked which ones were the black Austrolorp, because I was expecting black chicks. These have yellow bellys. I got 2 of them. I also got 2 Buff Orphingtons. One is so yellow, my grandson thought it was a baby duck. The other one has a black stripe on it's head and a light brownish stripe going down it's spine. I also got a Yellow Crested Polish (I was hoping for a white polish). I have them in a cage in the front bedroom with a red heat lamp on them. Hope Pixie (my Rhode Island) will appreciate her new friends when they are bigger.

That is what I thought. I am not so sure on the "Black Austrolorps" either. I will wait until the get bigger and see what happens. The only one I am positive on is the Polish. The friend that gave me Pixie told Don that it looked like I had an easter egger. I looked a pictures of easter eggers and the two that are supposedly Buffs, look like some of the pictures I looked at. I will post pictures later. Just got home from work and Don is in "Prime Shape"

Just pulled up picks of black austrolorpes and they do look correct. I looked at pictures of Buff Orphington chicks. One does look similar, so maybe the one with a stripe could be an easter egger. I didn't think they had any easter eggers at the hardware store. It said they had bar rocks too, but none looked like one.

If I remember right, barred rock chicks are almost black..
those people at TSC and feed mills etc throw the chicks all together, thinking that later they will remember which is which. that never happens.. Or people pick up a chick and put it back into the wrong compartment..
