Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good Morning All! Except for Susie and TO! So sorry for your losses! Raim good luck on your hatch! MLH naughty hens and cute rabbits! Payday today so errands to run. L brought home more plants than we needed suppose I'll squeeze them in and get some weeding done today along with cleaning the shed. Dang lawn is gonna need mowing soon AGAIN. Heard a chicken by the kitchen window just as I going out to put them to bed. It was Buster chasing Peatwo. Peatwo lost some feathers. I really need to make soup soon. Don't under estimate me ontonoh. I've killed before. Dang wind is keepin me out of the woods today. Started my Bash list this AM. Hang on to your hats people!

Wow, I think yesterday was indeed a bad day for animals. Sorry for everyone's looses. I also had some losses. 2 of my baby bunnies died and then DH texted me at work saying that our Barnevelder died. I'm not so sad about the Barney, I think it was a roo and heaven knows I have far too many of them. Speaking of roos, is anyone interested in a Production/Frizzle cross? He's really cool looking, but yeah like I said, too many roos. I can bring him with to the bash. Here's a month old pic of him. He's bigger now and even cooler looking.

It looks like we're very slowly going to start looking into getting a horse. My sister, a huge horse fanatic, is going to come over one day this week and give me pointers on where I can set up the yard for one (pasture, lean-to, all that jazz). I'm going to have to do some research on good fence chargers and price all the fencing out too. I'll have to figure out how I'll get water to the tank for it during the winter too. I think I'll have to end up carry 5 gallon buckets, which would suck! What does everyone here do?

I'll be waiting not-so-patiently for the UPS man to get here today. My birthday present, a little mini Brinsea incubator, should be here today. We had actually gotten one a week a or so ago, but it had a crack in the cover, so we shipped 'er back. I've been saving my black Frizzle's eggs so they'll be all set to go in. Just what I need, MORE CHICKENS

Better go check on the last baby bunny. Have a great day all!

Well, another nice day of breeze and sunshine

So glad the humidity is gone for now though!

Wondering if I have a possible rooster in this batch of chicks that are 10 days old. I hope not, but I am going to put any money on the fact that I have a rooster.

One rooster goes - two more hens come in... that's how chicken math works right? Here's a link to my question thread if any of you would like to go check it out. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=6557812#p6557812

Working
more on the coop today and then tomorrow I am off to meet with Carol to get two more chicks! And my second shipment should be coming from the hatchery tomorrow too!

Have a great day all!

Good morning! Looks to be an excellent day...I am excited...
Carol that thread you posted had some beautiful pics on post #22! I plan on going back to read about them. It kind of looked like a hurricane and then the rescue people? I wonder if I am right? The pics of those birds were also interesting. Funny thing is that I have a bunch of birds running around here that look surprisingly similar! It must be all that diversity coming out in my flock that they talk about! Mine are probably going back to their ancient origens or something!

THanks for looking all that up for us!

Raim--if they are broody put them in a bushel basket with the eggs and put a lid on it. Do this in the evening. THen you can let them out to poop, eat and drink in the morning and if they go back on, great! If they dont, put them back in and lid it up again. It has only taken me 3-4 days at the most to get them to accept a new nest this way...

Cind--you made a GREAT trade! I sure would do that one in a heartbeat! Asparagus is much easier to "catch" than fish!

Hey Frizzler--good that you have an "expert" helping you all the way especially if you are a beginner! Much can be learned from "old" horse people and reading too. What I have in the winter is the same hose as the summer but I put it down into our well pit to keep it thawed. (dont even want to think about that awful "thaw" thing!) Lacking a pit, if your hose doesnt have to be too long...you can undo it and then walk down the length of it holding it up in the air so it drains out. I used to do it twice because even a tablespoon of water left seemed to freeze and make a block (thus the pit) Others have made a sort of "heated tank" out of an old horse tank (or box) and a light bulb. Or you can carry buckets but have a heated drinking tank...then you might have to only fill it once a week if it is big enough. (caution advised there too--chickens love to drown in tanks especially in the winter!) Sorry to be such a downer so early in the morning especially, but those big animals sure can go through the water!

DrH--maybe you should just forget the wood for another day and go fishing instead? (I have some nice asparagus I could trade ya!)

Have a fantastic day everyone! Terri O

Hi again--just candled the shipped eggs I got...very disappointed! Check out the buckeye when I opened it!

You can click it to make it bigger...then I opened all these eggs and not one was fertile!

I have 2 questionables and 5 developers left in the bator...craptastic...but I guess you DO have to start with fertile eggs!

ok, but does the momma go back to the nest with the chicks at night? should I through some straw under the nest boxes for her the snuggle them in? now what I'm really concerned about, I have like 8 nest boxes and the broodies normally get down to poo and then return to a different box
hmm.png
is she gonna let these eggs/ die? can u tell that I'm new to this whole broodie hatching thing?! lol!
wish me luck, I'm gonna give them ready to hatch eggs!

TO, I got 4 birds that are broodie and I was hoping that with 18 eggs (3 duck) I could possible split them between the 4 and unbroodie them all! lol

OH and do I/should I put out some chick feed for the broodie hatched chicks? which reminds me, I need to go get some feed. do you guys/gals feed a bag of medicated feed to new chicks, then switch to unmedicated? if so, with a broodie how do you keep the layers out of the chick feed? maybe I should put up some kind of box of the sorts that the chicks can get into to eat?

I know too many questions!

ok now I'm going out to give them the eggs!

good morning.. I had a bad night.. couldn't sleep.. yesterday I couldn't stay awake.. have my days and nights switched..d@mn!!

Frizle. when we were kids, we rode the horses about 1/2 mile to the water in the wintertime.... lot more fun than carrying water..
the water was a spring on the hillside that never froze over..

I can remember leading the draft horses to the hand pump. somebody was smart enough to hook up an electric motor to it so we didn't have to "hand pump" there was a 1/2 of a 55 gallon barrel that the horses drank out of.. You had to try to guage it so that they drank it almost dry because you had to dump whatever was left so it wouldn't freeze for the next time.

I am getting hungry for some fresh bluegills.. or perch.. or crappies.. I have the boat all set up.. all I need is a fishing license.. and some time to go..

Annie heard one of the white rock roosters crowing this morning.. said it sounded pretty good for a first timer.. there are about 5 more of them and about that many barred rocks also.. It should be pretty melodious out there in a few days.. LOL they are all going to the freezer camp at a very early age.. Like 2 pounders..

today I will finish the garden cart.. despite the strong winds. I did not work on it yesterday.. I would rather work in a rainey downpour than in the wind..

have one late turkey pip left from this hatch.. the late pips are usually the ones you have to help.. Yes, I do help when it is needed..

THIS is gonna be SUPER cute!

you prolly have done it already, but dividing up the eggs should work.. you might have a no-taker.. then just give her eggs to the other clucks.

you can tell almost immediately who will take them.. I do not put the ggs under the hen.. I just put them next to her.. If she rolls them under herself, you are in like Flynne

no the cluck will not go back to the nest.. she will find a quiet spot to bed down.. often it will not be the same spot each time..

the only way to keep the layers out of the chick feed is to make it so they cannot get to it..

I keep feeding medicated feed until I switch to grower..

the problem with feeding them if they are free ranging, is that the cluck will be leading them all over the place and they might not visit the feed dish very often.. I scattter a little bit of feed on the ground right in front of the cluck.. she will call the babies over to it..

Hey guys, sorry to hear of all the losses lately! That's never fun
sad.png

Well I put the kids in daycare today (doctor says I should put them both in daycare once a week), and although my husband has been telling me to sleep sleep sleep, I can't! I haven't had a moment to get in the garden lately and it's making me angry!! So that is what I'll be doing. As soon as I finish my breakfast (another thing, I have to do. Haven't been eating. Like not eating any meals what so ever! I call it the baby diet
lol.png
Food isn't appealing to me lately. ) I hope to get my herb bucket planted, prep the side garden for plants, glare at my crappy excuse of seedlings, get the beans planted on the terrace, feed ducks and maybe clean ducks. Maybe I will work out some energy and get a nap in as well!
lol.png

I may be buying plants from the nursery though
sad.png
My plants look PATHETIC. I don't know what I did wrong. I will give them another week, but they are probably toast. SO BUMMED. I think the basement where I had started them was just too cold. I needed a heat mat, or something. Learned for next year. I also started them too late. I'd rather have huge plants than smaller than i'd like plants.

Windy Afternoon All... Again sorry to hear about all the losses. Just part of having poultry for sure. The hardest part if they are pets.

Yep me and Suzie have to get our fishing license too. My boat trailer needs two new tires though. One can catch fish off shore too, been known for alot of that kind of laziness in the recent past. The fish taste the same.

Friend called with a extra 15lbs of aspargus for us. Suzie made some cream soup with ham, aspargus, celery, onions, corn, cauliflower, carrots and a bunch of potatoes....oh my....it's tasty! Then we froze 9 one lb bags and gave Suzies mom a couple lbs.

Finished planting the last two gardens....let er rain now...my seeds are in the ground.

I had one of the nine week old black chicks you hatched for me Jim crow already. Those javas really grow big fast.
