Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well the post office called and the chicks are in the brooder with the others. Divided of course because the week olds couldn't keep their beeks off the day olds.

Figures. I need to get another brooder set up this afternoon after I meet with Carol!

I am now a new mamma to 2 White Crested Blue Polish, 2 Silver Spangled Hamburgs and 2 Buff Laced Polish and I think the meal maker they threw in was also a Buff Laced Polish as it looks the same as the other two. They are eating and drinking and falling asleep on their feet. Healthy little buggers. I do love Meyer Hatchery
smile.png
The chicks I have gotten from them last week and this week are super healthy and lively little buggers! And no losses yet!

Have a great day all! Carol - see you sometime today to get those chicks!

Good morning! Really have to get my laundry out on the line today....my day is so scrambled cause of moving stuff around to get to the mill tour. I need to be at my first client in an hour...and here I am talkin' to you all!
hmm.png
I only have half my chores done too...but I wanted to stop for a cuppa and a little sit down time. I have already changed my clothes once...it was too cool for what I had planned to wear today! Now THAT is weird! I sure dont know what is happening with our weather but I am liking it too!
We ate the first salad from the garden last night!!!
jumpy.gif
bun.gif
And oh was it good! I added bits of all the herbs I have growing too. THe little baby lettuce is soooo good! I had dd25 cook the ribs on the grill (yes I remembered them from the "dog walk" refrigerator!) and I made some quick baked beans--they too were surprisingly delicious...must have been all that fresh air yesterday.

I will be promoting our group today to all the people that come to the mill tour...MLH and I will talk us up good!
duc.gif
Well, maybe I wont tell them about everybody...
hide.gif
Hey, I had chicken dreams last night! Probably because I gave somebody the "grand tour" yesterday! Unfortunately she is a real sofry and one of the roos must have messed up one of my broody hen's nest...there was a cracked one in there seeping blood--yup the chick was still alive but way underdone...I hate it too but sometimes...so I took the rest of the eggs that were not sloshy and put them in my incubator...will see what transforms.

Have a fantastic day everyone! I hope I get to see a couple of you at the tour! Later now---(is that an oxymoron...?) Terri O

(PS) Dornes--good luck with those chicks...

went out to the coop first thing this a.m. cause of the broodies with the eggs that are due, last night there were pips in those eggs this morning I found one egg all cracked, the chick inside was bleeding a bit, the nest was abandoned
rant.gif
good for nothing hen! I picked up the chick/egg thinking it was dead but it was breathing now it's in the 'bator and peeping but still not out of the "shell". DS 5 has a pip in one of his eggs!
ya.gif
AND the nice buff brahma broodie has a chick under her
love.gif
I am so tagging her so I know next time she's broodie that she's a good mommy! just had to tell you all that we got 1 chick! rest should be hatching here shortly. oh wait I got another question, does the hen "help" them out, by pecking the shells? the other chick is almost out but it looks like mama is "helping"
hu.gif
and also, yes I divided the egg amoungest the broodies but I have an idea who was the bad mama, and I left her with only ONE egg, little naughty mama! and the other buff brahma has 1 or 2 eggs cause it could have been her that was naughty, but the silkie I know for sure has been naughty last year. any ways see ya!

me again,
barnie.gif
I went out to the coop to check on the girls, and both of the hens each had a smashed shell, little blood, chick laying there infront of them (maybe 2-3 inches away)?? what the heck? is this the way broodies do it? smash the shells, shove them out from under them and let them hatch?? ARG! I stuffed them back under them! it's either dumb me or dumb them!

Wow, this thread really got kicked back to the second page! I am shocked!
smile.png
I got some more work done on the coop today, then headed to Farm and Fleet in search of Chicken Gel... is that even what it is called? They didn't have any.

Got a small sand box made up for my one week old chicks and they are LOVING it. They have been flapping around in the shavings so I thought it would be right for them to have the sandbox. They are flapping away in their sand bath! I have pictures..... have to wait until they are uploaded then I will come back and share. As well as pics of my chicks that come today too!
smile.png

ETA to share pictures
yippiechickie.gif

Sand Bath - notice the sand flying around. So cool to watch them toss it all over the place
smile.png

Buff Laced Polish??

Silver Spangled Hamburg??? or possible meal maker...

I love this one! White Crested Blue Polish??? ADORABLE!
love.gif

And these two I am not sure. I think they might be the Silve Spangled Hamburgs... but they are the two that are not doing so well at all, so I set up the box that they were shipped in inside the brooder with the rest of the ones that come today with their own water filled with the pedialyte solution as well as chick start. I am hoping they make it, but they sure are not too lively. One is eating and drinking, the other... well, it is only drinking.
sad.png

And here's one of my week olds
smile.png
That one looking straight on is the one I thought was a rooster... but have been told it is way too early to tell. But that is for sure the leader of the flock, it finds itself in the situations first and seems to herd everyone around. Not mean or anything, I can just tell it is the dominate one

Evening all!

Dornes-those are some very cute chicks! I love the one with the red beak! So pretty! The sand box pics are toooo adorable!! They look like they are forming a line to use the "bath house"!! I hope the ones that are doing poorly perk up fir you. As long as they want to drink that is a very good thing. Sometimes it takes some chicks a few more days to get settled then some others. I use a vitamin and electrolyte for poultry mix that you put in their water. I also add some suger to it and that helps them. The gel you are asking about, I use and mine is called GroGel Plus B. Dh gets it from ebay, but here is the website for the product we get: www.TheFancyChick.com. I love the gel. It works really well to get the babies stablized.

Raim-whoo hoo in the DS 5's pipping egg! I hope he gets what he has been waiting for!! I know the broody frustration your going through...that is such a Worthless Chicken Trick... Brood the eggs to a certain point then crush them or kick them out mid hatch.
he.gif
I once has a commune of 3 hens all brooding their eggs at the same time right next to each other. All three trashed their eggs and only 1 chick hatched. His egg must have been moved around so it got missed in the carnage. He was such a mess-1 chick with three mothers. Poor thing. I named him Morris because he was a huge orange striped blob of a chick and he turned into a sweat and beautiful rooster. He came to a sad end when he was 2.

Well, the Mill tour was fun and it was great to see Terri O again. For those of you who missed it, you missed a great tour! The mill is amazing! So high tech and clean clean clean!! The safety checks they have in place to make the feed and the testing they do for micotoxins and protein levels is just...wow...! So, thank you to Carl the Mill Manager for the great tour and info and thanks to Mad City Chickens for letting us tag along on your tour!!

So, I've decided to take Agatha the Silver Sebright to the chicken show and I'm still debating on Valerie. I need to got look at the standard for the breed.... So tomorrow, Agatha gets a bath and possibly Valerie. I want to take Super Glue too, but I think she'll get DQ'd since she has a couple of black tipped feathers.....unless she "strategically molts" between now and the show..... Or runs into a bottle of bleach!
lau.gif

Well, I'm going to go look up the Ameraucana SOP.....Cheers!

Oh YES MLH--that was a most awesome tour!!! My little mill is severely lacking I will say that! (but they are really nice here!) Oh yeah...that was Karl with a "K"! It said so on his shirt sleeve! It said "Karl-tours" Or education or Knowledge or something...man he knew everything about that place I swear! I will say it again...Great Tour! Now I really want you guys to come to "my" mill and then we can compare!
roll.png

SO then I went to my client's place...should have just skipped it! I dont want to tell the whole story but she "fired" me!!!!
smack.gif
Little does she realize but, I dont put up with being mistreated cause I have a waiting list for my services!!! The only reason I didnt say "FINE--I AM GONE!" is because I feel sorry for her sister! So I had a loooong talk with said sister and of course she is totally on my side
love.gif
She knows how she is...expecting an apology tomorrow!

Weeded my stuff a little today...found the yellow irises that I got from somebody at the bash last year...they are about to bloom! I also found some type of Echinachia (I think) and it is full of powdery mildew! I am hoping that the clearing of all the "touch me not's" will help the situation. If not---I know that I am NOT meant to grow them!!! I swear this is my LAST attempt! THe Spiderwort is doing GREAT! REady to bloom and I am so glad to have 2 colors in the same area this year! THanks again for all the plants that I scored last year!!! I am trying to repay with some Mulberry trees as you all know! Going out to dig more soon...anyone want Box Elders??
gig.gif
? REALLY fast growing and self propagating too!
thumbsup.gif

SO Carol--since you missed the tour I sure home you and DOrnes and Sweetfolly got together....waiting to hear!

OK--getting dark better go and finish my digging and get the laundry off the line...yeah no rain!!!! Later--Terri O

well DS chick is free and dry
love.gif
another one in the 'bator (the one from outside that a hen busted up. 3 chicks outside under mama, 1 more almost free. I've come to the conclusion that under a mama chicks don't hatch like they do in the 'bator?? each egg (as it was "ready" to hatch) was smashed (not everyone had blood though) ???
idunno.gif
I got a bunch of nothing done today
roll.png
and now it's time to check on everyone again. not time to close things up till the ducks come home lol
oh and incase anyone has the question (like i did) about "if I have 2 coops will the birds go to bed in there own coop?" the answer so far is yes! lol we let the "babies" free in the yard this weekend and they all go home to roost in their OWN coop. lol maybe some day they wont, but they may not last that long.
big_smile.png

very cute pics dornes, whats ur mix for the sand? just sand?

Good luck with the birds going to the show. Quick question for you- those 5 red chicks that we have still haven't show any signs toward being boys at this point just about 8 weeks old is it a better than average chance that they are all girls???? I have someone who only can have girls interested in them.
fl.gif

Dornes those are such cuties. TO you are so kind to give your client another chance.
love.gif
raimnal congrats on the hatch.
jumpy.gif

I had a nice visit with the girls tonight after work. Was sitting with the Brown chick and a BO jumped up on my leg and just sat and waited to be pet. They are so sweet and a nice way to mellow out after work.
hugs.gif

Smells so good out here with the lilacs and lily of the valleys, two of my favorites.
This AM we could see where something was trying to get into the coop
somad.gif
so we set up the trail camera that DH got for Christmas from the kids. Hope it's set up right DH doesn't like to read instructions
