Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Contacted my egg seller and let her know about the # of clears.... thank goodness she has more babies on the way, I would like to get a few blacks for the flock. I am also happy she understands chickens and that sometimes those roosters just are not doing their job correctly!!!

Is anybody melting yet???? What the heck happened to the temp only getting up to 82 today????? And a tornado watch?

Time to get outside and check out the flower beds.....

Evening all!

Dooner-I will send good coop building vibes your way!!! Hope it goes well! I loved the special ballet dance story! To funny!!!

nonsuch-can't wait to see you at the show! I'm not sure how many entries will be there this year but since this is the clubs last show, I'm hoping for a great turn out for everything except Sebrights and Ameruacana's!!!

Seriously though it should be fun. They show the birds in cages called a "drop cage" or "drop pen". Once the bird is" cooped in" only the owner or judge can handle/touch the birds until "coop out". The judge looks at the bird and then will handle it to see how the bird feels, how the feathers look and meets the breed standard. The bird of the breed that is closest to the breeds Standard of Perfection wins the class and is placed on Champion Row. Those birds are then judged and the birds that best meets the SOP wins Best in Show.

Most owners mill around looking at competition, checking on their birds, looking at the sale/swap area. They also talk to fellow chicken people and are very friendly. It's a great place to see different breeds and talk to breeders and to invest in some quality show stock and learn as much as you can. The kids or "Youth" will have showmanship as well. This is where they have a really tame bird and the showmanship judge will adj the kid questions on the birds, breed knowledge, husbandry, breeding and the like. The kids earn points towards badges I think....I cant remember actually what the points are for! How terrible is that!! LOL!!

Frizzler- there is a great hatchery in Waterloo, WI. Abendroth's Hatchery. Rick has a few breeds but the chicks are beyond healthy. My dh and I do seminars for new chicken owners and I brood out some chicks for those seminars. We use Rick's hatchery and we pick the little fuzz butts up. They are so healthy and since we don't go through the PO the chicks have a great survival rate. I'm glad that you got your Dominiques. They sure are pretty birds!

Raim-hope you got your frizzle! If not I can always pick one up for you at the show!!!

Hey! What is one or two more chicks when you have 12......

Ok, well I better skedaddle....I've gotta get the paperwork for the show in order and get the car packed since tomorrow is going to come early....Cheers!

BL4-there was a tornado watch???? Where was I? Oh yeah...melting in the garden....I mean weeding the garden....

Good evening! THat "chicken ballet dance" sounds very entertaining! I can just see her on her toes spinning and twirling! You should have gotten a video...I hear ya on the heat BL4...I am definitely melting! I have the circulating fan on but it sure isnt helping me in here! I am heading outside right now to seew if it might be any better with a bit of a breeze!
Well--maybe a tad bit better out here...not much! Although the "coke bath" I just got when I opened the 2L bottle sure felt good!
roll.png
Scared me though...I was glad the bottle was pointed at the sink and not my computer!

Called DH on my way home from work and he called me back just ad I was done grocery shopping...they had just left from MS! I told him that he should have just stayed the weekend cause he has to be back on Monday! He thinks he might fly down instead though. I guess DD19 found him a $170 round trip flight...with mileage it costs around $600 to drive I guess!

Guess i am cutting this short...the skeeters have come out! I am going to hang some laundry (so It can get another rinse tonight) and I cant spell for sh!t either...that drives me crazy when I transpose letters while typing!!! Garden is going in this weekend WITHOUT fail!!! I dont care if I have to work in the rain...later--Terri O

ETA: Since I just saw your post MLH I had to tell you that my chicks looked at me like I was crazy when I fed them the chick starter I "won!"

THey were freaked about the smaller size I think...I am giving it to my quail instead! Oh yea, dont forget about the long legged bird I "need"! Have fun and good luck!!!

Sorry to hear all the stories about bad mail service. Thought I'd post a pic of a good experience at our Greenleaf P.O. Both times we got shipments from McMurray, we got an early morning call from the post office, around 6:30. The last time she said, "we have a box for you, and it's peeping!" Quite a nice experience, and she even posed for the poc!

Haven't been on in a while, got busy, and then couldn't catch up on the Cheesy thread - I was 20 pages behind!

BL4, your 4 babies are beauties, bros and sisses to mine.

I lost one blue, so down to 5 healthy chicks. That momma is so friendly, lets us pet her and handle her babies without even a feather ruffle. Now a barnie has gone broody, and she is the devil incarnate. If I can come up with some eggs for swapping at the Bash, I might put some under her. I still have the Jaerhons separated, if they would get to laying some day...6 eggs in 3 weeks. *taps foot, looks at watch*

So busy this week. The inlaws are here and the shiny new coop is coming along. We're all going to a wedding tomorrow, and gosh darn it I need to get the garden in!! I tallied up all my starts today, I've got 53 tomatoes and 17 peppers

How did that happen?

Dornes, you must have a great camera, those are really good pics. The lighting and detail are just perfect.

And did I see a newbie from Reedsville?? Very close to me, and Shantibird.

And TO reminded me, all those plants we swapped last Bash are looking great - lots of pretty irises right now. Ack, box elders are the weeds of the tree world. Don't be spreading those nasty things around!

Evening all, hope you enjoyed the day. The chicks had a ball, running and flying in their run. I just put them to bed and it was 100 in their coop. The windows were open all day, Tomorrow I will have to open their door too. I hope they will be ok, They have lots of water. Dr Ha ha I think I have 2 roos now, gonna wait to be sure, I really love the wyandottes. They are smarter than the golden comets and friendlier too.

Have fun at the gathering, wish I could make it.

David

Well, second chick is dead, just passed within the hour. I was giving it cool water through-out the day while I was in the house, about 8 times today, and it just wasn't perking up at all. The others are doing just fine so I am hoping it was just these two. But it is sad all the same. So I am super happy that I will be meeting with Carol tomorrow morning to get two more replacement chicks. Well not really replacements, because I really wanted the Hamburgs
sad.png
I will be calling the hatchery tomorrow for a refund.

Melting... yes! Man it was a scorcher today! We don't have AC installed in our new house yet and I am roasting here, it is about 97 degrees in my house right now and HUMID. I don't know how I am going to sleep... DD1 has stolen my box fan and the DD2 and DS1 refuse to give theirs up either... whew.

As far as the camera goes. I am actually a wedding photographer for my "real" job
smile.png
So yes, it is quite the expensive piece of equipment, but it helps that I know how to use it too! lol.

Well, kids are coming in from outside and need showers... who needs pigs when you have kids that are all under the age of 8?! Not me... lol

Enjoy your weekends and have fun at the Badger Poultry show tomorrow!

Well I am major bummed about Dornes losing two chicks, but happy that she is going to get these two salmon favs. I am then jetting over to Sweet folly's to get Terri O's quail.
Apparently SW's "D"H (yes that is quotes.. as I am sure she was a little angry.. LOL)...sold all the adult birds, so Terri is "stuck" with 9 cute peeping quail babies.. (Oh the pain)...
LOL
I get startled around 11:30 when the USPS deliver goob hands me my envelope... it seems that he saw the last name, and oh, there is this other person with the same last name on another street and he gets them all the time...
Not only was the outer envelope opened.. the inner one was as well.. the outer one had an afterthought of duct tape (IE a tiny piece) and the inner one was sealed within an inch of its life with tape...
Apparently THAT person didn't bother to read the address on it either, both the correct one on the big envelope and the inner one that had a SUN PRAIRIE address on it...
GRRRR

So no takers on the mottled d'uccle roo? You need to PM if you seriously want him..
ALSO the same lady has bantam polish chicks that are about 3 months old. at 4 dollar apiece.
You need to EMAIL or PM me... TY
Carol

Hi again--sure is warm up here...so glad I have a whole house fan and ceiling fans in all the rooms! Just catching up on my reading here and having a snack of rice chex and Nutella...MMMM! So now maybe I am tired enough to sleep? I am meeting Carol on Sunday to see her new place and get my new quail...gotta get the outside pen situated tomorrow along with getting all the plants in the garden...*sigh* how does this stuff get away from me so fast--the eternal question....I blame it on the computer! LOL--Nighty night! Terri O
