Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I had a little pastel call duckling die last night. I don't think she was eating and she starved. I'm convinced there is just something wrong with all my pastel ducklings. One is about 1/4 of the size it should be, one has a deformed leg, and now this little one dies. I really want to get some more nutmeg call ducks. Does anyone know where to get some?

Good roasting morning! SF I had to laugh when you said it should be perfect outside with heat and humidity for hatching today...I was thinking that very thing! I have one out this morning from my shipped eggs! I cant quite see what the shell says so I dont know what kind...it is black (of course!)
THe news just said to watch for pavement buckling today! Remember when that happened on I94 between Madison and Milwaukee? THat was right at the bridge by my house. It was really weird with all the news helicopters flying over and around and around Doing "Live at Five" or whatever they call it! So I hope no one encounters anything like that on their travels today....scary that the road can just "do" that!
DrH that looks like a really wicked plant! Dont think I have ever encountered it my self...and I am sure glad! It really does look like a pine too.
I have watered all the critters inside...now to go out and check out the outside ones...current temp: 81.7 inside and 80.2 outside--looks like I might be missing the coolest part of the day!
Hurley my message was that your roo--now named "Damien" (he looks like one to me even if that was your other roo's name!)-has taken over the blue Ameraucana flock as his own and was "guarding" them from the silkie roos I got from my friend yesterday! Let me tell you those boys were such a threat!

My friend is having really bad problems with coons--clever buggers seem to be going into the coop before the chickens,, getting locking in with them and having a free for all all night long! She is getting out of chickens...will be cleaning out her coop and then putting it up for sale. Remember that little paper coop I made? It looks so much like that it is incredible! It even has a clean out door like I made. I will get some pics and post them if anyone is interested.

Gotta run--busy day again! Have a fantastic day...think of those that dont have AC if you are sitting nice and cool in yours! (I might do a lot of driving today...) Terri O

(PS) just made Tabbouleh Salad with CA brown rice(instead of the usual Bulgar wheat) and it was fabulous! I will be bringing that to the bash! With you DrH--getting excited!

Sorry to hear about the pastel calls...do you have a lethal gene? Is there such a thing in ducks?

Wow this heat is crazy. I am at work today and praying my hens will be ok today. Gave them half a wtermelon this morning when I left for work and made sure they had water in all their bowls. They were panting a little yesterday but didnt like the sprinkler much... was trying to cool them down a little. I was surprised they all laid yesterday.

I cant remember who else mentioned it, but must be a bad spring for carrots because I noticed mine did not come up... granted, there is alot of grass popping up in my garden that makes finding the plant rows tough, but dont see teh carrots. May try to plant some more here. Radishes and just about ready as is my spinach. YUM! Wish the tomatoes woudl perk up a little more. Want to do some good spaghetti sauce canning this year. Had some great luck last year!

And Carol- we love Willow the Buff Orp. She is so sweet, My daughter Morgan carries her around all the time singing with her. Tried to take her on the swing with her the other day when I told her that chickens are not usually fond of swings... I think she got some extra worms to make up for it. Kids love to dig up worms for the girls! They are spoiled! But will have to earn their keep... going to let some out this week to work on ticks... found my first one on my leg last night. Yuck!

Hi Hurley,

Thanks for the reply about the "Buttercups" I'm a she

Where did you get them? I think they are absolutely gorgeous. Did you say that you hatched out some Lavender Orp's? I also love this breed and this particular color. How many did you hatch?

I do need to post some photos. They are still in my camera.

KEEP COOL everyone!

Have been looking more into this nasty thing and then went and looked at my Juniper tree. Think it's a Juniper but can't find any info on it stinging. The one I touched was very small, the one in the pic is about 8'. Don't know if it's some kind of defense for when their small and grow out of it or what. Didn't have the guts to touch the 8 footer

Got the kids fresh water in both waterers and their still workin over the mellon rinds and hiding in the shade. Have only been getting 4-5 eggs out the 11 hens yesterday got 8 which is the norm. The heavy rain made them lay in the nest boxes. So out there somewhere is a huge nest of eggs

Bad Naughty Chickens! Doubt that there will be a parade of lil ones with them all in the coop at night.

Gonna try real hard to stay off now!

how bad is the flipping over problem?

I have turkeys do that.. It seems that their equilibriam is not develped.. It can be corrected in about an hour.. what I do is take th bird and hold it in the proper position while I am watching TV>> make it move once in awhile so that it pushes with its feet to try to stand up.. you do this every ten minutes or so.. after about an hour they usually are wobbley, but they stay upright.. after a couple of days you would never know they had a problem..

He flips when he thinks he can run; his footing is not the greatest but he is doing much better now that he was this morning.... SLOWLY getting to normal (I am thinking it is more of a positional problem than a nerological one). His neck is a little kinked too from being at the bottom of the egg instead of the top but I think in time he will straighten out. His buddy #1 was really bad off at first but now runs around like a normal baby and is eating and drinking on his own. I have both of them together now and #1 is freaked out about this weird thing that flops around his domicile!

Air conditioners are going in today!!!! Then off to the river for a cool down with the kids!

well good news morning, the mama muscovy did not lose all of her ducklings.. she hid them while she finished hatching the late comers.. Annie put the 3 late comers in the incubator to finish them.. this morning mama and her FIVE little ones are in the guinea yard.. all 8 of them are solid chocolate,,,,YES!!!..

somebody might want to buy some , so we will leave 3 in the chickTV and let mama have those 5..

I tried to herd her out of the guinea yard.. Nothing doing.. I think that mean little b!t$h will be able to hold her own against any guinea..

the garden is finally dry.. (and greener than my lawn) .. Now that the ractor clutch is fixed, I can go give it a good drag and then lay out the rows..

I am thinking of making a raised planting table to plant the carrots and beets in.. no rows in it, just scatter the seeds like in a raised bed.. Annie doesn't like raised beds, but I think she will like this..

the chicks feathers are coming in....... and I THINK that little one IS a frizzle! a couple more days and I'll know for sure!

the suspence is KILLING me!

jim those 'scovies we got from u last year, one is sitting on 3 eggs and the other I think is thinking she'd like to also. NOT! hopefully IF she decides to go broody, she'll do it before the other one hatches hers (I'll steal and egg from her and let the other one have it. then they too can share babies! lol I do not need more babies. is there a market for fresh duck?

DrH, yep I'm planning on bringing buns galore! and 10 lbs sounds like enough, they will be other things. you wanna bring some cheese to put on them? I was also thinking of bringing beans??? did anyone say they were?
ok I'm off to the bash thread to fill it all in.

My brother found a baby raccoon all cold and barely moving this morning. I fed him some ESBILAC and got him to poop. That little guy is vocal! We raised one when I was a kid so I know how they are, but it's still weird to hear all those sounds come out of that little body. I'm going to contact a wildlife rehabbed I know and see if she's got any other coons to throw him in with. They sure are fun to have around when they're "pets". I thought my mom was going to cry today when she came over and saw the bottle on the counter. She knew right away what I had.

BTW the coon we had as kids was not kept in a cage. He had the run of the house (naughty and destructive) and went in and out as he pleased. He never bothered the chickens or ducks and he hung out in a tree by the house in the daytime. He broke his jaw somehow and we had to put him down. Raising him was a great experience.
