Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well I got up early after not getting to sleep till around 2 to go help client with his horses and ride with him... He had to cancel as his DW wanted to drag him to a art thing in our area.
Got home made breakfast with the big brown/cuckoo maran eggs.. my DH LOVES those eggs. I had some other eggs and they were BLAND in comparison..
THANK you Hurley!!

We both went back to bed and then woke up, got the trailer hooked up and went for a late afternoon ride.. I haven't been on my mare since Sept of last year.
And DH's horse was led around with kids on her back.. she usually gets a tune up ride...
Wonderful ride!!!
Had brats with Joan my barn owner, and then came home...
The foster dog we have needs to see a Vet ASAP... he is a total HORN DOG, he can't seem to understand my girls are spayed...
Well I am hopeful the drugs to help me sleep has kicked in!!
Night all

Frizz.... Glad you caught that bugger! Hope your daughter finds another favorite soon! Don't let your guard down!

Hurley....Sure hope you get some to hatch! Good Luck!!!

CC.... Thanks, found what I was looking for!

Well, I spent the afternoon building an outside run for the little ones. I'm sure someone younger, stronger, healthier and taller could have done it in an hour! Took me 5!

I'm 5' nothin' and driving those post in took a bit if doing... good thing I have at least some brains. But being short you learn maybe "unconventional" ways to do things!

The fence however almost did me in.

50' of 4' welded wire fence is HEAVY!!! And stiff, hard to unwind and get flat and CUT!

But I did it!!!

May not look the greatest... but it's up! I will say though, the whole time I was hoping my DH got off work early or one of my sons would roll in!

Looks like I win last to get the garden in!

What's my prize?

Dh has off Mon. so maybe after he gets done hauling wood he can help fence the garden. Hopefully I'll get it in Tue.! I think my plants are getting impatient! I can hear them tapping their roots!

WiCC - Love my Marans eggs, they are delicious. Glad you're enjoying them.

TO - LOL, I'm singing those meteorite-landed-on-my-incubator, not-gonna-get-em-to-hatch blues. :p Duh DUH duh dunt. Bow Bow. Duh DUH duh dunt. It's just the freakiest thing. DH went through the wiring and there was an open in the plug itself. OK, never heard of that before. Replaced the plug and it's working again.

Jim and TO - yeah, I've got the eggs in an incubator cooking at 99.5. Nothing yet, but will shout it to the winds if anything hatches.

To everyone else - thanks for the kind words. Just needed to vent. It's getting to be "of course, why wouldn't the incubator fail in the middle of hatching". I almost felt stupid for thinking things just might go smooth on this run.

CL - Good job on the fence. Certainly is more work than you would think, especially if you're struggling to do it by yourself. Being 5'3", I feel your pain on learning the alternate way to get the job done.

To the gardeners, you all beat me! Had plans to get in some raised veggie beds this spring, thinking that is going to be bumped back to next spring's job. Out of time and too much to do this year!

Update on my handful of chicks, they are chirping away and running all over their brooder, having a grand time. So far they all look good.

Beautiful Morning Everyone! This is my kind of weather. Frizz so sorry about that dang fox killing more of your birds! But glad you got it, hope that ends your losses. Geez ODr.H you can't catch a break! Hope the eggs you tranfered make it! TO I bet you are pooped that's a lot of gardening for one day. Amy glad to hear that your car pooling hope that many more of the people will and can come to the Bash! Jim it sounds as if your garden is rivaling the size of Bigzio's. I know mine is gonna get bigger next year AGAIN. Cind for being the last you win frozen tomato's. Sorry couldn't resist. Very strange day on the water, catch one or two then nothing, move, same thing. Only kept enough for 2 two fish sandwiches, a lot of small ones. But we almost had a grand slam for that lake. Caught bass, crappies, perch, walleye, and gills. The only thing missing was a northern. But we had a good time and that's what it's all about. I have some very unhappy kids today. Decided to keep them in jail until their done laying. Only got 3 eggs yesterday, time for a reminder of where to lay eggs. 2 mornings usually works. Bad naughty chickens! Gonna top off my big Mt. Dew jug with water and head to the woods. My goal is have the shed filled by the end of the month then I can start cutting for next years supply. Hey a fella can dream can't he? Better get a move on more than 4 rows to go in the shed yet. Hope you all have a great Monday!

good morning,, I slept like a baby last night.. woke up crying twice..

I have a friend in Cambria, wisc who is looking for a call duck.. her female got snatched by a hawk.. anybody close by there can help her out?

I decided to spot plant some plants down the corn row..like companion planting corn and califlour.. then all I have left are a few viney plants to try to place somewhere.

missed putting 2 guineas in last night.. their fault, they wouldn't come out of the blackberry patch.. One of them came out of there this morning,, the fox got the other one.. Annie is keeping them all locked in today.. she said it is better for them to be angry about it and alive than what the alternative could bring..

as soon as we get a moment of lull, we are gooing to butcher a small bunch of roosters.. only about a dozen or so of the young ones.. barred rocks and white rocks.. Prolly dress out to 2 to 3 pounds..

My egg buying customer came back from Albania early.. Now he wants eggs again.. we have 4 hens that want to set on eggs.. Annie said, what the cluck,, and gave some guinea eggs to them..

Mama turkey is taking good care of her 10 muscovy babies. It cracks me up when she calls them and they come to her...
IMHO turkeys make the best mothers..

Wonderful day yesterday! Check out my find from the Auction!!!

If you look at the slide, you can see how tarnished the whole horn is; I have already tackled the bell and am amazed at how NICE this horn is going to look!

Here is a close-up of the maker's stamp on the bell. I have been doing some digging on the age of the horn and I believe it is at the very least 100 yrs old... you can see that this is where I have cleaned the horn.....

So happy to have this beauty! It will join the two horns I played while I was in HS.

We spent the rest of the day yesterday picnicing and fishing with my sister and her family. Nobody caught much of anything but it was still fun to cookout at a local fishing hole.

In chicken news, I think my babies need to be relocated to the farm PDQ! I have more ducks on the way and no place to put them! The baby ducks are doing well, on some of them the bibbed area is growing smaller so I think I may end up with white ring-necked ducks! SW I jumped on Amazon and bought the genetics book you suggested so I can edjumacate myself!

The only duck I am worried about is the last one that hatched; he appears to not be growing.... and the poor baby has a crooked tail and is a bit pigeon-toed

should I brace his legs a bit to correct his walk?????

I am so sorry ODr.H on your incubation snafus! I hope you are successful this go-round!

Ok, have to run. Off to Fleet to pick up more pine shavings and so-on.

Bigz, I used to have so many troubles with deer eating everything in sight in my yard until I read an article saying to make "hair balls" out of human hair stuffed in an old onion/mesh bag & hang it in the plant that is being targeted. I have very long hair & I seem to shed constantly, so it doesn't take me too long to collect up enough for making hair balls, but if I need a lot of them, I'll also collect dryer lint & used dental floss to mix in with the hair. And they don't have to be big. I make mine about the size of a golf ball or less. The deer don't like the human scent, & it seems that our hair manages to hold onto this scent for a while. They don't sound very pretty, I know, but they really do work & they don't cost you anything.
Every year we are planting new tree seedlings that look literally like twigs, and since doing this, I no longer have missing seedlings the following morning chewed all the way to the ground. After a couple of seasons, the birds will sometimes raid them for nesting materials, so they wind up serving 2 purposes.
If you don't have an excess of hair on hand, you could maybe ask a local barber/hair salon to save you a small bag. I am sure they wouldn't mind. Just another one of my wacked-out thoughts.

Good idea ! Does it deter any other kind of animal like fox, coyotes etc????

I just cleaned out my hairbrush the other day and told hubby not to throw out the hair. Wanted to put it out someplace so birds could use it for nesting material. We found a very small nest once on the ground that was made out of horse hair, it was adorable !!!

Bought DH a 6 pack of mixed hot pepper plants. Didn't get them in the ground yet and of course some chickens (the ones I got from you Jim, naughty chickens) started eating them !!!!!!

So, other then fencing around our garden is there anything you can do to deter your own chickens from destroying your garden? Theses weren't in the garden yet but I'm sure once they venture out further they will find the jackpot. Our garden is getting bigger each year and would be awful expensive to fence. Plus we are having more tilled this week for the red potatoes we just picked up yesterday from a local seed potato grower.

OMG, that is terrible news !!!

I agree, you never know some of those little buggers could still hatch. Especially if they weren't shipped eggs you might still have a chance. I'd make sure the humidity is very high. They might even need help out if the humidity plumeted (sp) too. Two of my last batches I was incubating the power went out and I still got good hatches so you never know !! Keeping my fingers crossed for you

Was that a sportsman? I hear ya on the NICE email to the seller. I know these days it is buyers beware but when it comes to selling animals or in this case an incubator people should really be honest. But you know as well as I that it is all about the almighty $$ that makes people dishonest !! I couldn't live with myself selling something that might have a problem.
I've been kind of looking for a used sportsman myself but hubby's unemployment just ran out so it will be a while before I can even think about that now.

Hoping to hear good news from you later with alot of fuzzy butts in your brooder !!!

Good luck with them.
