Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

FT- I have a RIR that I am sure is laying and the other 2 are pretty identical Red Stars. I have not ever checked their vents. It doesn't seem like its gonna be as easy as you make it sound, but I'll attempt it. As far as the light cycle, they do have 14 hours of light every day. Their food is a Layena layer crumble. The RIR's shell is really hard, but the one Red Star that is laying has a very thin shell that breaks easily. I haven't seen any evidence that the "non-layer" is passing non-shelled eggs either. So, let's go on the weak shelled eggs for a second. If I add foods to provide more calcium and protein, will it effect the RIR that already has a very strong shell?

If you put a seperate dish of Oyster shells out for them they will take what they need. It shouldn't affect the hen that is laying the hard shells in a bad way.
There is a product called poultry Cal which replaces the oyster shell and grit so you don't have to have two dishes out, just one.

While you are looking at their vent take a close look at the feathers and skin above the vent. Spread the feathers apart and just watch. Look for any critters crawling around. Lice move quick and are flesh/light brown color. Norther fowl mites are tiny tiny little critters the size of a pin head or smaller. If they have mites you will see that their feathers around the vent look like they have poop stuck on them but it is actually the mites and their eggs.
I'm not saying that they have either of these but as long as you are looking at the vent it is a good time to check for bugs.

Also if they have a bad case of mites there may appear to have scabs around the vent whole.
I have silkies and they are notorious for getting Norther Fowl Mites. This is the time of year they thrive.

Kristip..... as for trying to get your pup to quit biting hands and fingers. I've done this with my dogs and it works too. (Wouldn't let younger children do this however) When the pup takes you hand or fingers into it's mouth stick you finger as far back into the back of his mouth, like gag me with a spoon effect. You want to make him want to gag, Do it quickly and say NO BITE while you do it. The kids can say NO BITE in a stern voice once the pup knows what it means and it may help (or may not lol) depending on if the pup respects them as alpha yet.

Ok, that's it for now.... Waiting for the septic guy to come. TO you started something. Sure hope it isn't a constant thing this winter for all of us. Our septic is backed up. DH thinks it's because I flushed the chick waterer's with chips in it down the drain and toilet for well, let's just say months......

All he said was GD chickens !!!! Glad I wasn't the one who wanted chickens to begin with.

Afternoon all!
Had to run to the market this morning so I'm just now catching up! The Girls are doing well and my punkie BO has been under the heat lamp. She looked better last night but worse this morning, after I'm done here, I'll go catch her up and give her an arbitrary shot of Tylan. See how things pan out....

Kristi-Cesar Milan is good. There also is a girl from England Victoria Stilwell. She has/had a show It's Me or the Dog and she is awesome. Completely spot on. I actually prefer he over Cesar but that is just me.

Well, best get myself going....later!

DRH.... Butters (Yes I caught that right away) is a Girl???? Ummm I know it can be had to tell as kitten "parts" seem to move and change as they grow.... but I could swear that was a boy! Always did a comparison check to make sure  Sorry about that. Maybe in a week it will go back to boy  When you take them to the vet I would think they could tell for sure.

Evening all,

How is it going? Nothing to new here. I now have gotten a total of 8 eggs from the banties. I think only one is laying since it is every other day, I suspect the seabrights since I saw one of them in the nests.
keep the Pics coming

having left over turkey and stuffing yum yum

Good evening. A banner day for sure! MXM came over and helped me clean off my back porch!

And for you MXM...

We got it all cleaned off, the rugs beaten out and replaced, stuff put away (mostly) and some lattice put up to staple plastic to. The idea was that my DS23 would help with that when she left to pick up her daughter....I cant find the plastic!!! I Know I brought it in with the staple gun and it is nowhere to be found. I suspect that when they "cleaned" the back room they threw it out! So I will go to Menards tonight and buy more *sigh* I hope I get it done before the snow flies!

Then the second thing...I went in to get my phone off of the charger and Snoozter (Chris) had called TWICE! SO I called him and he was just leaving Milwaukee. He stopped by and had the "grand tour" and brought me the lamb book too! We had a great visit...he was (of course) amazed at my quantity of birds...that's something MXM commented on too since she also helped me with the chores this morning! (yeah nobody (except maybe Frenchie) has as many various critters as me!) And I am not bragging! There are times that I would like to sell the whole lot--children included--especially when I get the end of the year feed report!

OK--I think I am going to head to Menards for that plastic...later folks! TerriOhopingtoonlybuyplastictonight

If you are going to add supplements to the layer mash, then you might as well buy less expensive feed and give the supplements with that..
