Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Ok...how much water do chickens, goats, horses, etc.... need in a day? We don't have electricity out there so of course the water has been freezing. I just refill it every morning and they drink it until it freezes and then they have to wait until the morning. Is that ok? They are laying ok (I am getting more eggs now that they don't wander out into the snow) and they seem healthy. Do they eat snow?
Anyway- all seems well with all the animals except that I am sure they are bored. I thought about buying them some sort of food block and I saw a recipe for making my own. Thought that may help with the boredom as long as the goats and pony don't eat it first!

Hope you all had a great Christmas. My DH gave me a bigger kitchen for Christmas. I had been complaining for the last year that it was too small for our growing family, so Christmas Eve he gave me an envelope with the letters BIGGER KITCHEN cut up into a puzzle. I was so surprised, now I need to find a contractor that can help with designing something that fits with our old farmhouse. Anyone know of someone in the Appleton, Green Bay or Manitowoc area that they can recommend?
Hope you all have a great night

first of all, make a list of things you want in your kitchen.. be realistic and practical..

Menard's in Wausau had a kitchen design center.. IDK if they still do that sort of thing.. they could show you in 3-D what the kitchen would look like..
all you have to do is give them the dimensions of what the kitchen has to fit into..(to the inch)

I did a lot of kitchens,, it is amazing what you can do with the current space if it is well planned..

as with the shoemaker,, our kitchen sucks...

yes chickens eat snow.. I do not recommend that you let them do it as an alternative to drinking water.. snow lowers the body temperature, just as in humans or any other animal.. your egg production will suffer as a result.. and you will need to feed more to sustain the body heat loss..

Hi All!

Dr.H... Glad L is doing better! Hope the test have good results!

Jim.... Ahhh...I C.... Kinda like my ice tea

Yep, some heavy fur dogs would rather be out no matter how cold. We had a Shepard/wolf hybrid when I was young. We'd bring him in sometimes when it was real cold and after about 1/2 hour he was panting like it was 110* in the house. He was a good dog though. I know the "shoemaker" analogy well! My dad was a mechanic, but at least I learned how to check out a car. DH works for a wholesale food warehouse...yea, he's good with lunch meat, but out of every 20 times I ask for fries ....

..... I think you slipped by a few people....lol

casie....wow....guard chicken! LOL

BL4...How long is that DaVinci exhibit going to be there? Kinda a ways to go but I would love to see it! How much did it cost? Sounds like you got allot done in a few hours!

judge.... Most of my waterers are heated but 1 I can't heat. What I've been doing is give them warm water and putting a heated hot/cold pack in it. Not perfect, but keeps it from freezing longer. A new kitchen! How Cool is that!!!!! I love my house, and it's better than almost all the places I've lived in...but... with all the adding on to and updates, it's still, for the most part, a throw back to the '70's! I have indoor/outdoor carpeting in my kitchen!!!! Icky, icky , icky! Whoever thought that was a good idea ought to have their head examined! Hope you can get what you want. We need pics!

Well, guess that's it.... hope my bald tires get me to town and back in the new snow..... night all!

Good Morning All! Glad Cindy addresses most things my brain is fried! Got up to go at 3 so did the kids.

So doing dishes, making a cake, frying bacon and sausage for the freezer. Have cat litter to change, garbage to get to the curb, Cigs to make, beard to trim, shower to take, get scratch and water to the chickens, mine and L's bills to figure out, wood to bring in, and something else.

Should have never gone to bed.

But I did get 6 hours of sleep! Sorry for the whine! Feel like one Jim's "root beers" would really be good!

kjg! Hope you like what everybody but me is posting! If there wasn't much drainage their going to take the tube out L's stomach today and try soft food. They still don't know what's going on and I'm about ready to blow! Will go back up as soon as I'm caught up enough. BBL maybe. Geez 6 o'clock where did the morning go?

Cind, apparently they have extended how long the Da Vinci exhibit will be at the museum. Here is the link to the web site for the museum.

Judge, I re-did our kitchen a few years ago. It is a PITA!!!!!!!! Cabinets will kill you price-wise, when I was out shopping and figuring things out, I had what I wanted priced out at Home Depot to the tune of 12K. If you are handy with pencil and paper, Home Depot has design papers you can use to figure out how you want things.(it is just glorified graphing paper.) Moving plumbing gets expensive too. I shopped around and found that ordering my cabinets from M. Schettl saved a bundle! I have NICE cabinets made right over in De Pere. I'll see if I can upload a pic for you................. I guess it will have to be later....

Anyway, off to work for me. DrH,

I really wish I had Doc's energy! Geez he's even old....

I dislike waking up with a headache. I wonder if the barometric pressure from the snow could be doing it? Or I'm really dehydrated . I filled up the 32 oz h2o glass, so gotta drink 2 of those today.

My roo was beaten up pretty bad. When I tried to clean him up he IS missing tons of feathers from his head. Almost picked bald, poor boy! His comb is scabbed over in soooo many places. The water was so bloody, i ended up not scrubbing at all and just using warm water dribble over his head to remive some of it. he did get some treats of scrsmbled egg and bread. I locked up the offender and he'll be taken care of. I hate blood. I get queasy. I hate seeing blood streaked all over my coop. And feeders. And floor on the shed. Yuck yuck yuck. (Yes Jim, I'm a wuss...)

The ducks have been going inside the actual chicken coop with only a bit of encouragement . That really makes me happy. I miss my other 3 ducks though. :(

Going to take the kids to Barnes and Noble today. We all get a snack from Starbucks. Then they get to pick a book. No toys. No Legos. Just books. Books are good.

Ok, headache is killing me. I need to get coffee. Have a great day! Oh and Jim... Your pictures and picture loading skills are great!

good morning, just about cuppa'd up.. slept like a baby last night,, had two root beers ..

One tip I have for any kitchen planner.. put the dish washer off set from where you are going to store the plates and cups.. most dishwasher doors flop down,, then you have to stand to one side or the other and reach to the cupboard to put dishes in.. not really good for back muscles.. also, consider raising the dishwasher up from the floor about a foot to 16 inches.. makes loading easier.. You can build a drawer under the dishwasher for storage of soap, towels/dish cloths, extra kettles or what have you..

today I am thinking of lifting the dog house off the trailer.. using Ollie and the forks.. I reinforced the roof overhang just for that purpose.. I still don't know where to set the house, yet.. I want it close to our house, but I don't want the chickens to use it for egg laying..

If the dogs won't use it, then I wouldn't mind if the peahens , turkeys or geese used it for their nests..

DD#1 is coming here today to get a lesson in baking dinner rolls.. I have to make 100 for the party tomorrow.. I told her to come before noon.. she is habitually a late comer, so she might show up by 3;ooPM......

OK, coffee is cold in my cup, things to do, bbl........

No snow here,, Sorry TerriO, the tractor thingy doesn't apply to the whole state.....

Light Snowy morning here

looks like it will last most of the day with 1 to 2 inches possible.

Jim- I enjoy seeing the neat things you are doing!

Come spring we will be replacing our Red Golden pheasant male, found him dead in the aviary, looks like he broke his neck- not sure what he flew into.

Will be starting the incubator today and adding the eggs we have been collecting.

Sorry that L's issues are not resolved, but, glad you are keeping on top of it.

Adding UP/ACV to your water will help with the freeze and give the chickens added nutrients

Jim, great job on the uploading of pictures

Love to hear about new chicks in incubators and hatchings

BF4, sorry you have headache, I have them too...they suck. They put me on topiramate and that helps little.Glad you roo survived and is not that bad.

Hi everyone and thank you for the warm welcome! I am enjoying this new addiction

!!

I have a heated dog dish in my coop. I needed a light for the girls anyway, so I ran an extension cord and plugged in the light and the dog dish. Works great! I am very surprised though at how much the girls drink in this cold weather. I put warm water in the dish every morning. Although this morning I did have a speckled sussex stting in it....silly girl!!
