Glad you are back Unkadan. I regretfully have Frontier as well but not by choice. Been battling them ever since they bought out our local company. That is why I just replaced our phone lines so they can't say anymore that my constant DSL drop is our fault. Not going any further with that. Already have a screaming headache and a nose that looks like it belongs on Bozo the Clown after slipping doing chickie chores this morning and going face first on some paver stones in front of the greenhouse. Thank you Lord, nothing broken, not even my nose, even tho it looks it. Me sweet hubby comes home, takes one look and says, "you want to go to the casino honey?" then cracks up. He is soooooooo lucky I love him,

Anyway, before my headache gets worse I wanted to let anyone interested that live up here about this;

"low cost spay/neuter clinic in Antigo - The Fix Is In, Inc. (715) 550-7729. Dates and pricing: www.thefixisin.org. Dogs $80-$95, Cats $35-45. Includes Rabies. "

This was listed in the want adds of yesterday's Antigo Post Crescent. We have a new vet /clinic owner that is very involved with this group. BTW-there was a vaccination clinic @ the Pickeral Fire Dept. last night and we got our little girl all up to date for $15. Good deal and even better the one doing it was the vet that took care of my previous puppy from birth thru his 12 yrs. and helped him pass at the end so it was good to see him again. Great vet and I am sooooo glad he is back in the area now running a mobile vet service.

that's it, all my head can think for now. time to go feed the girls and crawl into my recliner for awhile. (We are under an advisory) before the expected ice storm hits. could be a long night if we lose power. Anyone in the northwoods be safe

Sounds like something Dan would have said.

I did the feather sexing on my orps, but it wasn't very accurate.

So sorry to hear so many are aching/in pain.

I can relate. (You can add my name to the list). I hope you are all feeling better soon.

Pain is no fun at all.

So glad Dan finally decided to rejoin us.

Things should be getting more interesting around here shortly. Maybe Bigfam will come out of hiding soon.

Jim is definitely the hatch master with the best advice around. I agree on paying to get an auto turner. While it may not sound like much to do it by hand, just remember it has to be done multiple times a day, and night, and every time you take the top off, it takes quite a while for the temps & humidity to get back up. Save yourself tons of grief & stress & get a turner. IMHO.

Ok, head is banging like crazy again. Time to pop some more painkillers.

Oh yeah. Purely Poultry had some good tips for receiving chicks in cold weather.

When the weather turns colder outside, chicks will sometimes have a more difficult trip through the postal system. The care you give a cold stressed chick immediately upon its arrival can make all the difference for a healthy chick. Your brooder should be prepared ahead of time with a floor temperature of 95 degrees as a norm. Chicks that have gotten too cold during the trip will typically not eat, drink, chirp around, or otherwise act like a chick. For these birds, getting their internal body temperature up to 95 degrees as quickly as possible can be the difference between life and death. Make sure a part of the brooder is up to 103 degrees for no longer than three hours and place these stressed chicks in that very warm area. You will see that once their internal temperature is adequate, they will quickly start walking around, eating, and drinking normally.

Another thing to keep in mind during the cold winter months is temperature fluctuations and drafts. The best place to brood chicks is in an enclosed building that is temperature consistent. A heated garage, other outbuilding, or a basement is a great place for chicks during these cold months. If they must be outside in a barn or other unheated space, make sure you are checking the temperature both night and day to keep it at the appropriate temperature for their age. (95 degrees the first week, then reduce temperature by 5 degrees each week until they are fully feathered out in approximately 6-8 weeks).

And please remember to add some Sav-A-Chick in their water, and dip their beaks in the water as soon as you get them home so they know where the water is.

You guys are soooo sweet! I love how you are so willing to help, and I am so grateful

I have decided that I am going to hatch out a few of my own chicks and see if I can get this right before I pay for eggs that I kill. So.... I am going to gather up about 6 eggs in the morning and give it a try. I do not have a turner and unfortunately I don't get anywhere to buy one except maybe once a month, so I am going to try it by hand. The chantecler eggs wont' be ready for a few weeks anyway, so I figure by then I will have a small amount of experience before I wreck these beautiful eggs I am getting. Wish me luck

My chicken that I posted with the feathers missing is now missing feathers on almost her whole back of her neck and head. It actually looks like there are feathers trying to grow out of a shaft. Like all these tiny tubes with feathers poking out the top. She seems to be losing them on her body too, but just like a few white tufts of feathers are peeking through the red. I turned her upside down to look at the vent, and I didn't see anything crawling around, but I admit I have no idea what I am really looking for. I did see some flaky stuff almost like dandruff on her body and I can see her skin on her neck. It looks cracked? I have no idea...

Judge, check around online for a turner. Amazon, TSC, the bator brand's website, etc.

As for your hen, I'd say it is a mix of an overzealous roo & a molt, otherwise her feathers wouldn't be growing in, which is what those shafts are. She'll be ok, but you might want to get her a saddle if she is his favorite.
Here is a link that I ordered from once. Her prices are very reasonable & her shipping is fast.
