Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Ok- here is my Corn Relish
1 3/4 c sugar
2tbsp canning salt
2tbsp dry mustard
1 tbsp celery seeds
1tsp ground turmeric
1/4tsp black pepper
2 3/4 c white vinegar
6 c cooked corn kernels
2 c finely chopped onion
1 c finely chopped celery
4 c finely chopped pickling cucumbers
1 c finely chopped red or green peppers (i use 1/2c of each)
Combine sugar, salt , mustard, celery seeds. turmeric. pepper and vinegar. Bring to a boil over medium heat stirring often until sugar and salt are dissolved. Increase heat to med. high and add corn, onions, and celery; return to boil stirring often for about 20 min or until onions and celery are tender. Stir in cucumbers and peppers; boil gently stirring often until cucumbers are translucent and mixture is slightly thickened. Ladle relish into hot jars leaving 1/2in headspace. Remove bubbles. Process in hot water bath 15 min.
Make about 10 half-pints or 5 pints.
We love it, and it is really bright and beautiful in the jars.

Fish Fry Friday To All...great advice angi on keeping the peeps warm. It's a must for the little ones without feathers in the dead of winter.....

Nothing new here. Some snow, some cold..must still be winter.

Sounds like you are off to another early start H&R. Might have to see what you have for extras this year?

It was nice enough today to allow the fire to die....the sun kept the house above 75 all day so....fired up the fish frier and enjoying sweet potato fries, catfish, talipia, and ho-made slaw to die for.....must be heaven here on the hill!

H&R, I'll see what I can do.
Bigfam, I am so not going to comment on your "post an ugly picture" statement. Although it's really killing me not to.

Dan, I agree on the turnips. Almost anything tastes better with turnips. Yum!

No sun down here today. Just lots of snow.

Sure is quiet around here on BYC today. Nothing new or exciting around here, just a day of laundry. Fun stuff!

DH has band practice tonight so it looks like more of the same for tonight. Oh, before I forget, if anyone likes Guiness, New Glarus just came out with a coffee stout that is to die for tasty. Maybe it won't be quite so boring tonight?

Pretty quiet here as well, we did have sun today- really helped melt the ice off the roads, etc.

We are having some ice cream and watching a movie- Ice Age Contenetial Drift(only seen it about a dozen times now

- it's DS(7)'s favorite movie right now)

DH is asleep- they finished snow removal around 1 pm today, so it made for a long day for him.

Hi all! I can just imagine how tired your DH must be H&R! I helped the kids shovel today and it really takes it out of you! The darn skid-loader didnt want to start (I am sure it will be MY FAULT when DH gets home) so we had to shovel by hand...I ended up getting the ice chopper out cause the ice was 2" thick under the snow!

So now I just got done packaging up the birds from yesterday...they range from #2.9 to #8.1! What a span! Here are some pics:

All ready to go into the freezer!

I will say it was a little sad going outside today and they werent there to greet me with their "I am so hungry!" cries! They were some pretty nice birds overall. I didnt find anything weird as I butchered them this time....no large livers, that is whan I would have cut the bird into pieces to see what was up...all of these I am freezing whole so I dont know if there are any anomalies in the meat.
WOW Bigz, If I can get meaties for that price I just might get some more....thye HAVE to grow better in the spring than in below zero weather for sure! The 2 chicks I have left from that broody hatching in the late fall are still so tiny! They just cant put any weight on when it is so cold!
It is so nice...all the dogs are lying down and sleeping...my house is quiet for a change! I am sure it wont last long though.
Gotta head out and lock up...anyone have any other ideas for chicken feet besides soup? I had JJ clean up a bunch of them and my friend Steve told me how to do soup with them....but I have seen the guy on TV eat them in a different way...that is my search for tonight I guess. If all else fails I will talk to the folks at the Mexican Grocery and see if I can get some ideas...the language barrier is large however...

Have a great night! TerriOenjoyingthelastbitofsolitudeyupDHcomeshometonightbutiwillbeasleep:)
ETA: my friend is getting out of peacocks. SHe was going to sell them at the swap. Anyone interested? I have sent her a message to ask her price. JJ?

My silly chicks got to play in the greenhouse all day today only I got busy playing puppy beauty parlor with my little teddy bear dog SO I got a little off schedule. I swear I was only a few minutes late when I thought I better go feed the girls and put them away. (They always goin as soon as the Sun dips below the top of the big pines long before it's actually getting dark ) I look out the back door and sure enough, there they were, looking up at me, and telling me they were ready for their supper. :th who owns whom here??? So anyway, I was the dutiful employee and quickly prepped their mash and I led the parade to the coop where Soup was already waiting on the step to the "people" door and I swear she was tapping her foot!!!!

Ok, a question for all you chicken swappers------how long do you isolate a new member before putting them in with the flock? Then how do you introduce the new lady/ladies? I've read a lot of different opinions but I would really like to hear how you all handle this. Thanks in advance for your input.

One more day of spring then back to winter. Enjoy!!!

Quarantine for 30 days. Then I put them in a crate for a couple days in the coop. Evening of 2nd day in crate I open the crate door when is dark and they're all sleeping. VIOLA in the morning the chicken is out with the rest of them. It will still deal with pecking order pecks, but it shouldn't be excessive.
