Afternoon All.....Wow, it's almost 5.30 and still time to lock up in the daylight. I'm loving the longer daylight hours, bigtime!

That was funny bl4, i thought you were gonna say your kids are big enough to run away.... wonder if you're missing the vino yet? I enjoyed a glass today watching the race. You know, one always quits with a small glass...

Dang, thought for sure Junior was gonna pull er off. being 2nd sucks!

In regards to breeding, grading is used to add vigor to the genes, and can be controversial, however the purity is relative and can be regained through breeding back to the original stock...they breed true in 8 generations and none of the original genes are lost, just temporarily diluted, just sayin.

Hoping for sunshine. Time for some melting and Spring like teaser days.

don't believe everything you read..

you are going to get oodles of suggestions for winter hardy breeds..

most chickens will survive our winters.. so it boils down to,, what are you looking for from your chickens ? meat ? brown eggs ? white eggs ? multicolored eggs ? just pretty chickens ?
pure breeds ?

I always suggest starting with just one type of chicken,, if you are planning on hatching your own eggs.. If you are not planning on butchering your own chickens, cross breeds are difficult to get rid of,, especially roosters.

then later on, do multi breeds if you can separate them for hatching eggs..

I like buff orpington for multipurpose chickens.. they lay a nice sized egg, light brown.. and they are easy to dress out at butchering time.. the hens are not real big, but the roosters are fair sized..
AMEN!

Jim your enclosure is looking great. All, those nice neat square corners.

Well shoot, Terri, too bad I didn't know you wanted to get into daycare, hubby would probably love to send the heathens out for some farm time.
LOL

thanks JJ, but I cannot take credit for all the square corners,, especially the teeny tiny ones..

I found out why the car 's battery won't hold a charge.. the courtesy lights on the door panels won't turn off.. I disconnected the battery this time..

baked chicken and dressing and mashed taters for supper.. I just got the call , so off I go..

Oh I am glad that my friend just messaged me and said that she doesnt have the channel for "Shameless." Now I am staying home to watch the Sunday line-up. AAAHHHH!

Oh yes Hurley--any time he wants a break, he can bring your boys over! That would be fun! It would be interesting to see the interactions between the kids!

Gotta head out and get the chores done--the TV lineup waits for no woman! Now if I can only get the tv to work....Hurley...kids?

Hello everyone. Got about 95 post to read so I figure I'd say hi first. I had a great day today :) I finally got my first hen eggs of the year. 4 chicken eggs and another mallard egg :) About time! lol My When winter first started DH found a pile of 23 eggs under the snow blower in our "red" shed. ( its our mower, minibike, blower shed) and to day when I let the crew out after being penning up for the last 3 weeks my Ancona B lined it to the red shed to lay an egg, in the exact spot the other pile was found. So looks like now I know who layed all those other eggs lol. I'm not letting her out tomorrow so she can start to lay in the coop. Oh and my White Cochin roo finally mated one of the hens. Took him long enough lol. He's almost 9 months old. I still havnt heard his crow yet. A bunch of the girls who didnt lay today were pacing and chattering like they were looking for a spot to lay, so looks like things will start picking up around here :) . Well thats all the news I have for now. I'm gonna go read the posts I missed.

Ok, so we have finally decided on the coop and now we need the chicks :) Here is a list of the following breeds we are looking at. We would like to get chicks, so if any of you have any of these available, please let me know!

I could help you out with the SFH's a bit later in spring and possibly the Legbars, Ameraucana and Orpingtons too but they would be more towards summer.
