Tell it like it is Ghost!!!

I'm happy to hear that everyone's chicks (and roos) are um...in production, but I am sad to say that mine are not

We had to buy eggs again

TO, CC, or delish-I'm gonna need to steal eggs from either of you if mine don't pick up the pace here really soon.

Do hens stop laying when they begin molt? Just wondering because I got mine just over a year ago and they obviously haven't molted yet. When do they molt?

Congrats Amy!!!

I've had a really busy and tiring day and I'll be having another one tomorrow.

Good evening :) hows mister gibs? Our chickies are 1 also. Did not molt. I beleive that happens fall time. Our girls production also slowed. Hubby put an auto light on 2 hrs in the evening and am. Eggs; right back up there. We have 13 girls, average 9 eggs a day. I posted the ? Is it ok to do the light. No response yet... a lot of 4h moms recommended it tho...

Hurley...great buy...but how many incubators do I see...a styrofoam one in the one pic, red one and the new big one?? Better fill those up

LOL, yeah, I've got 2 styros and the little cabinet, but couldn't pass up the upgrade.  If the new ones perform as well as I hope, I'll either sell the others or keep them as emergency backups.

Funny these new ones came up immediately after I upgraded the old ones to electronic thermostat in an attempt to make them better at regulating.

Gee do your styrofoam ones have the thermostat? Let me know if you are selling those? We are going to be setting one next week with just th auto turner and no fan or anything...hoping for the best

Just curious......why is ok for one person to discuss their illness, but not for another?

I guess if I'm not interested in what someone has to say ill skip over it even though my fingers make it hard to do. This is an open forum is it not? Or are there specific rules that only apply to certain members?
I'm confused? Did something happen?
As far as I know there are no rules....

Hi everyone! Hope you all are well.
Congratulations Amy! How exciting!!!!

Good night everyone!

I usually do not use lights. If you want eggs and you purchased your birds to give you eggs, give them light. The decision is yours.

During winter and loss of light they slow to give the body a break. Same with molt. It is hard on them and making eggs uses resources some need to stay warm or make feathers. Not all chickens are the same. Some breeds lay right through the winter and do not need reserves to keep warm. Some birds lay right through a molt. Some hatchery birds are bred specifically to spit out many eggs the first year and gradually slow down to very few as the years pass. You can have two sisters from the same hatch that lay totally different. You have to do what works for you. I do not use lights because..If my birds are not laying..there is a reason. Broody...molting..needs a break..and sometimes..too old. I have on occasion left a bird to long before culling. I like a bird or the way she raises chicks and left her stay through one more winter and i know i should not. I feed her all winter and end up culling come spring anyway. I have a hard rule..if they are not laying by April 1st I cull. All my birds layed through this winter. My pullets started to lay in winter. No lights.

Judge, this will be #3. We have 2 boys now. DrH, Ethan asked for a sister right away, I don't think Cartman has a clue. But he will in Sept! I'm wondering if I should still bring wine to the Bash when I can't partake...the only wine I have lately is at communion.
