You and Annie gave her the best possible care in a loving environment, and that alone is the biggest blessing a parent could ever ask for. As Dan said, you both done good.

I can't agree more. Jim, you should be proud of how you increased the quality of your mom's last few years.

Chicken scratch...I had two production reds that laid great for almost 3-4 years. Just retired them....

I really need to separate my 3 to see which one(s) are laying and which aren't. But I am leaning towards culling all of them.

Well I've got FF started. I don't think it is fermented yet....it doesn't smell. Its only been 12hours. How long does it take when you first start?

It takes a while to get going..you can still feed it. Did you do your brewery grains too? I am so jealous.

Hey guys. My sis lost a chicken the other day:-( she wants me to see what you think.
Says she went out for chores, and she seemed... slow and lazy. Normally a very active girl. When she checked about an hour later, she had mucus coming from the beek. Described it to look like runny poo, and bad odor.
The chx seemed to be choking. She tipped her up, and about a cup worth came out!:-( she died shortly.
Sis is nervous it could something contagious. Been a cpl days. No sign of any others sick... lmk what u think and recommend!

Not enough information. it sounds like sour crop. Not contagious.

Fremont has a pretty big hatchery if you can't get hooked up. They sell POL's.

Okay, I need opinions from you all.

After realizing that my RIR is a production red, Delisha and I discussed the fact that they stop laying after a year. Well my non-RIR and the 2 red star (or whatever they are) are already just over a year old and 2 out of the 3 have laid eggs, the other is a freeloader.

Instead of keeping my upcoming Easter chicks in quarantine for 30+ days, I was thinking about culling the 3 that I have, cleaning out the coop and run, then adding in the new chicks.

Any opinions???

I do not quarantine chicks for 30 days. They have not been exposed to too many things. You know who you are getting your birds from and probably getting them before they hit the ground. Two weeks would work for quarantine, however at two weeks they will be to small to put in with adults. Get rid of the free loader.

was a busy morning.. Mom passed away peacefully in her sleep at 6:15 AM.. she was 98..

she had not much quality of life for the past couple of years,, but before that she had a good life..

now I am going to begin reading posts # 41 through 64 ..

I will pass them all along to the rest of the family.. Annie is the one who deserves the most credit for Mom's care.. I was only a clumsy assistant.. she did all the dirty work..



40% humidity and 99.5 F is what I strive for with chicken eggs.. a little lower or higher hum% won't hurt anything,,

Jim I finally am doing that test run you encouraged me to do, the 1202 is running right at those numbers. I started loading it at noon today with 15 blue eggs from the Meredith birds, these girlz have been running with a BCM roo and the Blue Wheaten cockerel sooooo. This will give me a trial before I set the Chantecler eggs I am picking up on the 17th. I now have the Ameraucanas separated as well as my BCM's,,,looks like hatching season has arrived in the north woods!

I borrowed a large machine today and moved all of the snow away from the gh, next project is to get the new brooder built and in place out there, it will include a pen so the youngun's can get on the dirt during the warm sunshine (soon to come)
I'll get some pics as this progresses.

Deli--Sarku? As in teriyaki chicken? I did add a splash of ACV to the FF starter when I got home today. BTW, I can give you some spent grain when the hubby makes another batch.
