Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

A few picks of the Blue Orpingtons

His chest is really filling in nicely..in another 4 or 5 months he will be getting some adult feathers. His chest should be really full

Maybe you could help Jim (jvls) build chicken tractors

I sure could if I had any free time. I think I am busier now than when I had a full-time job outside of the house. Gardening, couponing, kids, dogs, cat, chickens, house, husband, all keep me busy. Husband laughs cause when I left my job people asked what I was going to do with all my free-time. He sees how busy I am and just asks me "whatcha gonna do with all that free-time"? Ya right!

ARRRRGH!!! Had 2 windows open trying to get caught up with everyone, had a huge note going, and I LOST it!!!! Not going to try to re-type sooooooooooooo,

HI and Welcome to all the Newbies!!!

SDELFE~no such thing as a boring life if you have critters so feel free to pull up a branch, grab a cuppa and cluck along, WELCOME!!!

sorry for all the sick babies, hubbies, etc.

Sorry to hear about the Kitty. Hope you aren't forced into the hard decision sooner then you want.

love all the cool pics (TO~ still waiting for baby goat pics, hint hint)

CC~Census doesn't pay below minimum, just the opposite. I was making $16.50 but this "operation" only pays $12 hour + mileage which, if I get it, will be ALOT! BTW~the 'old lady" part wasn't such and issue after all. I think except for one girl I knew, I was probably the youngest one in the room. Only 4 ladies and the rest were all old fogies!! (sorry jim

) Nailed the silly written test. 8th grader could have passed it. the 2 oral interviews were about on the same level tho they did ask some tough "what would you do if" questions. Now it's wait and see as they run the background checks, call references, etc. 2 openings and maybe 20 people there or so. If that was the only session they held (don't know) I think I stand at least an even chance

great advice Jim btw to CC about pricing her eggs. Sorry you worked yourself out of your job. That's what you get for being so skilled and willing to share your knowledge!!!

Hubby can't get our tractor to start so the drive wasn't done yesterday (no biggy, we only got maybe 2') and we are supposed to get rain/snow whatever tomorrow and hit with another storm on Monday!!! He sold the plow truck so this is a real time crunch but it's not above zero yet so it's too cold to work on it yet.

Had a scare this morning. Got up and found the power had went out in the coop and it was -10 outside! fortunately it was still 18+ in the coop so I quick made some warm oatmeal for the girls and took them some fresh water (there's was froze of course because the water heater was off) and turned their heater on. Have to bring their big waterer into the house later to see what damage may have been done. It has a 2-stage heater in it. All my fault. In a hurry when I put them away last night and flipped the wrong switch

dumb, dumb, dumb. Thank heaven my coop is well insulated!! Won't know if anyone got any frost bite on their combs til later but so far everyone looks fine. Just went out to check and everybody was on a nest. guess the cold delayed their morning lay. Poor chookies. Extra mealworms and nice long play date in the greenhouse to make up for being a bad chickie momma.

Ok, so, sorry for any comments, etc. I may have missed. Good luck on all the hatches!!!

Amy, was that you who wanted these? Kinda pricey, though?

Pilgrim Geese - Starter Flock (Jefferson)

Have 2 white and 6 gray geese of auto sexing Pilgrim geese for sale. $175 for all, or $100 for half. Animals are 2 to 5 years old so were laying eggs last year, some will lay for years. Goose eggs are fantastic when used in things like cakes, pancakes, etc.

Yes, I would like to add Pilgrims someday. Starting with eggs, not adults. I really want some Shetland geese too; rare, auto-sexing, smaller and thrifty geese. Sandhill has them now (but only in assortments). There is just no way to do that this year, won't be any extra time/money. I'm trying to build up my duck population, then later it won't be so hard to add geese.

Good morning! Cold is in full swing today...but thanks to the NyQuil I slept well. Coffee tastes yucky...I can always tell when I am sick cause the taste buds dont work right! Sounds like DS is getting up...thed dogs go wild when they hear him getting out of bed. One of my BCs cant stand him and she has riled all the other dogs so now they all bark! It is getting rather old. We are trying a penny can now...the weird part is that as soon as he sits down she is fine with him!

Got a letter from the IRS...They are saying we owe $987 in taxes from 2011. I wonder if that was the hold up with the Fed refund....sneaky I say. It will be interesting to see what DH has to say about it for sure. Anybody want a house guest for the next couple of months? How about you Ghost? LOL!

Sdelfe...we dont lead exciting lives at all! We just like to talk about the mundane stuff that happens to us every day! Sometimes I would like to have a nice quiet life...but then I would probably be really bored! I am sure that we could all hook you up with more critters, Ghost could send you half of her houseguests and you could have some of my cats! There. problem solved!

Oh yeah...then there's Jim coming to your place to build his coops....

I still stand by the fact that skunks dont kill their food. Neither do possums. The wildlife guy that did a presentation for our 4H club said that other critters do the killing and they follow along to eat the spoils and get blamed. He had a bunch of reasons to back it up....he published a book called Myths About Animals. I will have to see if I can find it.

My head feels like it is about to explode! Maybe I need to go out and do chores...sometimes the fresh air works wonders. Maybe it will today? My brain is twisting letters and I keep haveing to retype...Gotta go.

so far we have only come up with 3 pints of maple gold here. The sap is just not running like in years past. I blame the drought.

even last year we ended up with a gallon.

speaking of a year ago, I was watching my pear trees flower and then freeze, all before the bees woke up. I can take this weather as long as it gets me my 10 bushel of pears this year.
we didn't bother tapping last year because of the weather being warm and then cold as the sap taste changes once the buds come out. We'll see what we end up with this year.

our fruit trees are still small so we are only getting a few cherries and a couple small apples- hoping that the cherries will do better this year.

It's great to be here at BYC. Such a nice and helpful bunch you all are. I've been lurking for quite some time!
Here's a panoramic shot of my back yard, sans coop, as it's still just a bunch of ideas and random wood stuffs in the garage. lol

first I am calling bullpuckey on you Terri. If you wanted a boring life you would stop finding new cool stuff to do ( tree sap, dog training etc.)

You are correct about skunks not killing their food, unless you are a grub, then you are in danger.

NyQuil does that to my brain too. maybe stop slurping that stuff when the sun comes up? LOL
