BigZ ........we got about 5 inches here, dam winter I screamed at the sky while plowing... that mother nature needs a friggen vacation, cuz I'm really REALLY SICK OF WINTER, COLD, SNOW AND WIND. cuz now we have a nice stiff breeze about 25 the wind chimes are humming like crazy. so all that nice wet snow will be ice tomorrow, hence the reason I quickly blowed it up..........

Adam was home over the weekend had a good visit but no where near long enough to get anything done, still need tune ups on the jeep and truck, today the 4 wheeler gave me a hassle again, and the dog pulled the run down, so here I sit....waiting for stuff to get fixed......... sick of it already.. wish my hands didn't suck so bad, I know how to do all that needs doing, but have no strength to do it.....argggggggg hate my hands!!!!

Anyway waiting anxiously for our chicks and my new bator to show up......... I ordered the Brinsea 20 octagon with turner, so I only need to hatch 2 batches this year, and anyone counting on BO chicks ...sorry can't do it now, the neighbors roo was taken and eaten by a fox this last weekend, along with a SS hen taken right off the roost..... and I don't have a BO roo so that shot my plans for some more BO chicks, so anyway will still have SS, Dels, and EE's,...........

JJ - If I start straw bale gardening, can I start now????? No really, I think that it would pose a lot of complications in maintaining nutrients, preventing molds/fungus, etc. But I've lived in a straw bale house before...does that count??

We are missing some of our regulars, where have they all gone? Welcome back Ghost!

Thanks Delisha for the FF advice. I'll keep feeding it to them, but man they stink!!!!

I texted DH this morning and told him we need to bump up our cull date. The RIR has become too verbally aggressive and one of the red stars has become too territorial with the rabbit trying to keep him on one side of the coop. Its looking like Sunday will be the day. Anyone want to come over to visit with us?

Call me crazy but as I was working today I took a few minutes to watch the snow fall. It was so peaceful, what a nice day! this might be the last snow of the season, what a nice quiet way for winter to go out. Oh yes I m ready for spring to but Ive had an experience or two that taught me to embrace the present.. It could be so much worse! I m so glad to have the chance to witness these wonders on a daily bases. Take a moment to soak in the peacefulness as the evening rolls in. WHAT A DAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah - it's beautiful until you lift up a few shovels full! Looks like we might get more on Wednesday!

Does anyone on here do bee hives? I want to find out more for a basic hive... Thought I would check with my homestead experts first

I am interested too! Just did a quick search, and found www.wihoney.org.

I've been looking for someone who keeps bees also. Looking for some honey to sell at my store. Maple syrup and handmade soap (with essential oils)! Contact me if you're interested!

Anyone looking into beekeeping should call their county extension office. They can point you in the right direction. The wihoney site is good too.

There is a local nature center in my area that holds a honey/beekeeping exhibit every fall, they call it Honey Sunday. They bring in a few active hives and give demonstrations on keeping bees, smoking them out, collecting the comb, and then extracting the honey. Very interesting, educational, and if I ever get the heck out of town I have all the resources I need to learn how to keep bees.

Another good resource would be Mother Earth News.

Irish, contact Jake Jakubac (sp) of Amherst Jct. I believe they sell his honey at the Stevens Point Co-op (plus he is my in-laws neighbor

) You are looking to sell soap???? Send me a PM and let me know where you are located......

And before I forget; THANK YOU everyone for all of your kind words about my poor kitty. He was such a sweetheart and I will miss him terribly.

Thanks for the honey info!! (My cousin kept bees until he became allergic to their stings - he reluctantly gave it up.)

Good evening! My fingers are pruney from peeling so many eggs! Deli--I used two half gallon jars and got at least 2 doz eggs in each! I had to make another half recipe of brine to top off the last jar.

Whomever asked about cooking eggs in a muffin pan--I saw that on FB and I have heard that they dont peel very well. There is a thread on here called "crazy easy way to hard boil eggs" and this is the method that I use now. It makes even eggs that are just laid peep fantastically! Here is proof!

THe shells come off in one piece! Really. Start the water boiling and lower eggs in one at a time with a spoon. When all are added and water is boiling again set your timer for 14 minutes. WHen timer rings, pour off hot water and run cold water over eggs. Boils them perfectly every time and they peel like a dream. Try it!

I am heading to bed...maybe all the snow wil be melted by tomorrow! TerriOhoping

WOW! You're a machine! Do you put any vinegar in the water when you boil them (not to make them easier to peel, but to keep them from cracking open)?
