Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

OMG--I am finally caught up! CHatty, chatty folks...I LOVE it!
I am boiling sap once again. Finishing off this batch in the house and if it stops raining I will start up the other stuff outside. I have 10 gals of raw sap out there and 2 pots with about a gallon between them in here. Syrup might become a white elephant for me since I think I am going to have MUCH and the kids prefer Aunt Jemima! DS said, "just who do you think is going to eat all this syrup you are making?" I am thinking if I dont buy A.J. then they just might eat mine anyhow!

My eyes are very tired from reading so much. I think I will go and have something to eat now. The Bobwhites are doing fine this morning. I sure wish it would get warmer out so I could move Tommy out and I could get the quail off of the LR floor!

Ugh! I hate posting pictures of chickens. Between my phone taking forever, BYC posting glitches, and the chickens not cooperating I can't get anything right. Oh and I forgot to mention that my chubby fingers are creating typing errors too!

UnkDan: I used to have a business of raising exotic birds (parrots) when iving in Cali many many moons ago...a lot different world than chickens.

My biggest hurdle before moving that direction is getting over the need to ensure what kind of home they are going to and remembering that God created chickens to eat (yes I know the chicken that I buy at the store came from a real live chicken at one point that wasnt as cared for as backyard chickens and aren't nearly as healthy). It always happens and I fall in love with the buggers and hate thinking of them becoming someones dinner. So until I get over that hurdle and know that a majority of the chickens I raise will become dinner-I am just in the planning stage. (I know Im going to get grief over these comments-Im prepared LOL).I have thought of even just raising and selling fertile eggs for the first while until I get past this.

Breeds that I have been investigating: Salmon Faverolles, English Orps and have my eye/made contact with a breeder that appears to have very nice quality of both of these breeds.

Someday!

I am with you one hundred percent!!!!!!!

I can not meet it and eat it...

You could bring some to the bash to trade or sell.

We never ever ever ever use anything but the real stuff. If we don't have it we don't eat pancakes or waffles.

Unkadan-I KNOW thats the problem-I have the room. Its just that right now I keep chickens for a hobby and pet value and Im trying to not loose the friendliness of the girls by having too many-This really is an addictio

LOL I so wish I could quit the corporate world and find a way to stay home, skip the hour 15 min commute and make a living! :p Maybe some miracle crop I could raise? hmmmm

This "miracle crop" sounds illegal . . . Lmao

Hhhmmmm CC may have a point (for once). Lavender babies, Orpington or ameracauna, are a b!tch for me. I think I will increase the odds and put the 6 in the mini brinsea. At least that temp stays constant! Better odds perhaps??? (At least when there isn't a helpful teacher at school shrink wrapping them...)
Wow. The devil must have had to get himself some longies for the day.

I think you should put your lavs in the Brinsea & follow the manufacturers instructions to the letter. I haven't incubated too terribly many times, but I've had 100% hatch rates in my mini out of all the fertile eggs I've set in mine so far. Hopefully I didn't just jinx myself now.

So the feather sexing (Primary wing feathers two different lengths on females than males) doesn't hold true across all breeds? I am wondering how hatcheries (that get them from different breeders) use this when shipping chicks? :-( Sure hope my 4 are correct!)
It does not hold true for all breeds..and most of them you have to do it in the first few days. Hatcheries vent check. The excessive males go into the grinder for feed.

Nothing chubby on that body..not even a finger

I agree with Amy! And if you have way more than you need, then yes it can be considered a white elephant too.

Hatcheries don't sex chicks by feather sexing method. They look up inside their vent. Ouch!

I did the feather sexing thing for my orps. (Pipe down, boys). Did NOT work. As for all your room for chickens,

CC: Welp Hatchery where these come from, state that they feather sex: http://www.welphatchery.com/welp_hatchery_tour

And as far as BBP and your suggestion-not sure much harvesting would happen LOL
