Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning everyone!
Lmiller- I am a mother again this morning too!
Here are my chantecler chicks. One hatched a few minutes ago- and one hatched yesterday. I will get a picture of my bantam ameraucana later-

So the hatch is done- 2 chanteclers, and 1 bantam ameraucana. Not a very good hatch rate, but I'll take it!
Yay!!!!!

Ok looking for your opinions. IF you were looking to add some fruit trees based on ease of care, bugs and soonest fruit, quantity...what woudl you add? DH wants to add some more fruit trees to our mini orchard ( we have 3 apple, 4 pear, 2 peach and 4 plum). Seperate area has blueberries and cherries and then there is my berry patch. Not sure if Kiwi will ever survive good...but we keep trying.

so anyway... I told him it would be a win win if he bought me some for my bday. what would you add for our region?
Mango grafted paw paw!! If I could I would. My DH would not eat them. He will only eat what he calls *regular* fruits. They have huge leaves for shade and you can't beat the taste of that fruit.

And of course persimmons..yummy little fruit. Little trees with tons of fruit.

Quote: Yes, please tell us about this project!

On new fruits: I am getting a Dolgo crab apple sometime this season. The fruits are golfball sized and tart, but my mom used to make THE BEST crab apple jelly from a giant crab apple tree in a relative's yard. I bet there were bushels of fruit on that thing every year it bore. I bet it would be suited for cider as well. I think the chooks would be happy to clean up any leftover fruits too. I just planted a Contender peach last week, and am getting 2 pear and 2 apple trees by mail from an orchard in Gillett that specializes in old variety fruits.

Judge and Lmiller, hooray for chicks! Excited to snag those Langshan eggs in a couple hours. They will have to ride piggyback in the bator for a week until my German New Hampshires are due. I have 2 Pekins hatched, 2 more pipped and waiting to see what the remaining Pekin and WH eggs do. Please babies, please!!

I moved the Khaki Campbell ducklings to the little coop as the Jaerhons now have their own tractor. Anyone else have Khakis? Mine are like....Leghorns on speed. Totally freaked about darn near everything. Will they grow out of this? I wasn't expecting that; my Welshies are so calm, and they were derived from Khakis.

Will do on the updates. I guess I should start with a photo of how far I have gotten thus far. I can post a pic of my round chick enclosure as well.

Amyable, I used to have a couple of contender peach trees. They weren't quite hardy enough for my area. I love my cherry trees though, they do very well. I think one is Northstar and the other is an Evans Bali.
I just sold the 2 khaki campbells that were out of CelticOaks eggs.

The khakis I had for like a week, we're SO flipping skittish! They were awful. They freaked out, skinned their feet and toes and knees if you tried to get within 5 ft of them. (they were in a run with concrete). I'm waiting to see how what pekings and runners are like. I hate ultra skittish animals...

here we go

Bales on edge(not on strings) sprinkled fert. on top and water alot.

I put in T posts to put a trellis up with a 2x4 top

Funny thing happened on the way to making a round chicken run, I got tired of putting it back together and made it square to take the stress off the pieces.

ah well.

and here is a pic of my ferrel cat that adopted my chickens as playmates.

Hi !

TO... you said you were going to dig in you freezer for "waste meat" and see what you can come up with.

Congrats on the hatches!

One of the turkeys broke brood. I think because she was where the chickens lay and they kept disturbing her. I gave her egg to the one in the coop. She rolled it right under as soon as she saw it.

The skunk was caught!!!! Young son took it to the wild life reserve. He reset the trap too.

CU later!

JJ and KJ: I agree-embrassing the kids is payback fromt eh many embarrassing moments during the younger years! Plus...ITS FUN!

I am interested in finding out how this bale gradening works out for everyone-great concept.

I started LAB FF with a little ACV and contrary to other reports-my chickens think its better than scratch!!! they love it. Third or fourth day of it going and its bubbling away-kinda creepy actually. Our barn cat has even been going after it!

and after a nice 70-80 weekend....today MAY FIRST we have...yes SNOW AGAIN!
