good morning, I spent a great deal of time outside.. I made two nest "boxes" for in the peacock pen.. they turned out just like I envisioned them.. within a half hour of setting the first one in place, a BR chicken layed an egg in it.. all 3 peafowl were on the high roost this morning.. I have to put a lower roost for the chickens..

I bought a cheap blue tarp for the roof.. it will have to do until I can save enough $$$ for a few steel roof panels..

I lost 3 of the new chicks.. it happens when you have that many .. Annie opened up the rest of the brooder space to them.. they were sneaking through the small hole in the brick blocking the opening, anyway.. then too dumb to go back through same hole.. they are drinking well over a gallon of water , closer to 2 gal per day ..

Zeke, I don't post my picture because I couldn't handle all the attention it would bring.. I'm sure you have the same problem.. I wish I was born rich instead of good looking..

If the sun is shining today, I just might take some pictures..

good morning

nice weather for the next few days, planting time here,,very busy

finally got the brooder shack set up and the chicks out of the basement,,,wayyyy better
14 White Chanteclers, 8 olive eggers, 4 Barred Rock all doing well

next hatch will be turkeys for a friend, then hopefully some of the WH duck eggs will be fertile, 25 of those in the sportsman

fellow coming from Ashland to get hatching eggs later today CL ads drew all customers from at least 2 hrs away,,,go figure

I will be taking a trip to northern wisconsin mothers day weekend and can bring the silver spangled hamburg rooster if anyone in that area wants one because the nasty neighbor is threatening me and I need to find him a new home.

What a beautiful day yesterday! I am SO happy the weather cleared up and the sun came out! A lovely day for a wedding.

Met up with Amyable and Julie at the Natural Food Expo in Oshkosh; we were treated to a lovely presentation by Joel Salatin (and of course I picked up his book). I was hoping he would be there in his 'normal' attire of straw hat and bibs, he looks quite different in a sportcoat and a tie! I was only able to stay for one of his talks unfortunately.....

Anyway, pis of the present!

Happy Birthday Judge!

Had a few over to buy chicks and almost cleaned me all out..I have all male Orps left. I bought a nice black and a blue copper Marans pullet from one of them. So put more Orp eggs in the bator. I hope the duck eggs are doing well in there. I did something different this time. I hope it works better.


I have to take pictures of the BLRW they are really growing and the colors are coming in really nice from the older group..some pretty birds.

here are the "nestboxes" .. the one on the right is the first one.. It is shorter than the one on the left.. I did not think the turkeys could fit into it.. but as it turns out, I saw a turkey go into the short one this morning.. Note the egg laying in front of the door .. chickens...



this is the big peacock inside the pen.. the small peacock is still running loose outside the pen..

pictures are not loading well today.. very slowly.. or not at all..

I got attacked by the BR Roo today.. he came at me eight or a dozen times.. I kicked to kill each time until he figured he had enough.. we will see if he learned anything next time I go visit him..

going to go move some dirt with Ollie if it is not too wet, yet..

Happy Sunday everyone!
Happy belated Judge! Love the geek gift.

Finally finished 're-laying the greenhouse floor and it turned out better than the old one, of course. Hubby won't let me do anything else today, says I've over did it the last two days so I am just sitting on my back porch babysitting the chicks in their playpen and watching the ladies catching a nap nearby. All but Crockpot, she's taking advantage of the situation and trying to get a special treat, spoiled chooks.

The only Salatin book they had there was his newest one, "Folks, This Ain't Normal". I grabbed it too, read the first chapter so far. It's about how the new societal 'normal' is bored kids playing video games all day and people completely disconnected from their food and families. He suggests getting back to honest physical work, producing healthy food, and encouraging kids to take pride in a job well done from an early age would go a long way in helping bring our society back from its degeneration. I can toast to that.

I need to pick up his Pastured Poultry and Family Friendly Farming books too.
