ETA: varying temperatures within a styro bator is pure bull s--t..
If somebody had the equipment to measure such differences, they would not be using a styro .. so I wonder how they know there is a 5 degree varience..???

I have never figured out where to put the fan on my broody hens either.

The Farm and Fleet model has both a turner and fan for roughly 120 bucks along with a plastic outer shell over the styro for protection.

Crowing!

My 10 toed buckeye is crowing at 4.5 weeks. Amazing to me

I took some pics of his feet for my curiousity.


The 5th toe on each foot is where spurs would grow. They point up, and never touch the ground.

any comments?

VickyW- yes positive on the tendon. It was born that way and I tried to get the tendon back in the slot, but it wasn't happening. It's a LF Black Langshan and I don't know the sex yet. It's a little behind the others and smaller.

Psycho- Its much easier to use two incubators if you want to do staggered hatches. If you collect 10 eggs and put them in one day, then 10 the next week, they will obviously have different due dates so like Judge said you just move the ones that are due to the hatcher. The one with the incubating eggs stays clean enough and the hatcher can be cleaned between hatches. The Styrofoam hold up fine with bleach. I bought one of the incubators with fan and turner for the incubator and stuck a meat thermometer through the Styrofoam for more accurate temp. The hatcher is one of the $45 dollar models that I added a fan to. I did find that leaving the hatcher on between hatches is really helpful because those Farm Inovators take a while to stabilize temps, but once they do they seem pretty rock solid. You have to adjust the temp then leave it overnight. If it's off then you adjust a tiny bit and leave it again for a long time. Adjusting the temperature without letting it stabilize leads to a very annoying cycle of adjusting that will make you insane. I have not adjusted the incubator temp since I got it set when I bought it. Now that I am leaving the hatcher on it is also extremely stable.

FrenchToast- I sure hope you feel better. I never heard of that respiratory issue before.

JustJohn-the Farm Inovators at does indeed have a plastic shell over the Styrofoam which is kind of nice since my cat sharpened it's claws on the hatcher that doesn't have it.

Jvls1942- I was just thinking my broody needs a fan.

It's hot outside! She is in a horse stall and sitting in a horse feeder, so I am plugging in the stall fan to give her some air movement, lol. Good point though. Hens don't have fans.

Psycho I use the cheap styro bator with a turner and a jury-rigged computer fan for the fan. I have had great success. I have also hated in the incubator and just spray everything down with mild bleach solution and let everything air dry in full sunlight. Like I have said before, there is a wealth of information on the subject on this forum under the Learning tab.

Finally on our way home! Should be pulling in later tonight, going across MN right now, coming up to the Slayton exit soon.

Good morning all!

I have a question/need some input:

I have a couple batches of chicks, and one batch (8 week olds) has one chick that has seemed to not grow as fast as the others. Then last night I noticed her legs are acting funny. She walks like shes drunk and her legs wobble/give out. She seems otherwise healthy, poops are normal, alert, was dust bathing etc.....Only other thing I have noticed is shes pretty skinny.
Any ideas what would affect legs like this? (Its not like Mereks were legs are out to the side-jsut weak and give out).

Here are updated pics at age 14 weeks of the two supposed roosters. The white does not have saddle feathers yet but has attitude adn is often caught sparring with the known rooster above. Made a sick pre crow attempt this morning and has the red saddle feathers coming in. Nice bird though. This white one has always been much bigger than the others and very aggressive to other chickens and people. Hackles look rooish, especially when sparring with willow the roo. It wont sit still to get good pictures though

The OE roo looks like his daddy(The back and blue eye) He even looks like he has the same comb with the 3 lobes running front to back.
