Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Shadow was just jealous..she needs to learn not to touch. Will take you a long time to teach her. You need to start, or she will take out the whole coop one day. It took me a year of work for casha and I still do not totally trust her. She still will mock charge a bird.

Geez the threads move quick in this forum!

I need some advice...our chicks are about 9 1/2 weeks now and we're pretty certain one of our Amercuanas is a rooster. How do you find homes for roosters? The Northern Wisconsin State Fair is coming up soon - could that be an opportunity?
you cant take birds there unless they are entered and/or tested.

Wow, so sorry bigfam. You really have more patience than I do. I would give it my very best but after the second kill, there would be a rehoming.

I can't rehome him. I haven't be able to give him the training he needs. I finally have a class to start on the 18th. But he is getting bird crazy for sure. Since he is to help my son with autism, he is obviously more important to the family than the chickens. But I don't have to put up with this either. So we have some very intense "leave it" training on the horizon.

I let Riga out of her area with the chicks. It's been 5 1/2 days shes been locked up with them. As soon as she gets out, She hops up to harass the broody mommas right away. So I decided if I found her on a nest she was getting dunked in a bucket and locked up again. Later I saw her out with the babies. They were hopping around in the greens chirping away. When I went to put the ducks away, there was no Riga, and the babies are outside by themselves. I found Riga in the coop, on a nest. F&cking bird got hauled out of that nesting box and dunked in the cold bucket of water. She is now locked up again with the babies. What is wrong with her?!

Cute bigfam, sorry about your loss. I think I've spoiled my chicks already soon as they hear my voice they stare and wait for me to come hold feed in my hand for them to eat although they have 2 feed dishes to eat on their own. They sure like cheese slices, shared a bit off my sandwich with them. Daughters coop is done just have to make a run for her and mines sided on all fours. If I feel up to it will make the trusses for roof and get the tin on. Then get to work on the inside. Going to make a brooder in one of the corners so I can get the chicks out of the house.

BF4, my MIL would take the dead chicken and attack the dog with it. Once or twice would be enough to fix any issues she had with dogs and chickens. YOU are the Alpha NOT the dog and the dog needs to learn that the chickens are also above her station in the pecking order of the household. Your chickies are very cute!

Once again the fireworks are getting lit off all over town.... this should continue for many hours..... and days. Maybe by Sunday it will stop.

Back to work tomorrow....... and then Saturday. At least this week was a short one!

Heather, how do you really feel ? strap that dog to you with a leash every time you work with the chickens.. keeping it isolated from the chickens will make matters worse.. exposure exposure exposure...

It was a wild one here today..
the people came fromTomahawk and bought 5 Buff Orps, % turkey poults and 10 barock chicks..
as they were leaving a friend pulled in and picked up my antique 2 row corn planter.. going to feed the deers.. and before he left, Jim pulled in with his wife to pick up her batch of baby guineas and chicks.. and dropped off more eggs to hatch..

I put up the last of the purlins, and then watered the tomatoes and peppers.. the mosquitoes nearly took chunks out of me.. whatever happened to just sucking my blood ? two of them grabbed me.. I got away.. after I heard one say, should we eat him here , or carry him back to the swamp ? the other one said, eat him here,, if we take him into the swamp the big guys will take him away from us..

I am going to step out of character for just a minute and make a statement.. about "re-homing"
to me it seems like passing your problems onto someone else..

If we are going to hatch eggs, then it is out responsibility to handle the unwanted birds.. make up our minds way before they hatch that we are going to butcher the (roosters in most cases) birds.. re-homing and especially with the contingency that the bird never gets killed, is unrealistic and unfair.. If we want to keep him alive, keep him, don't expect someone else to raise our pets..

now I am back to my old lovable self again..
