Rooster: free on Craigslist. Cull them while they're young. Or grow them out for food.

Shadow KILLED my absolute favorite teenager chick Sally today. I'm so sad. She was my first chicken to come up to me to be petted. I could pick her up, give her pats. I didn't do anything to tame her. She just came out that way. That f@cking dog better get a grip on this sh!t. Now I have no tame birds that want to be touched to pet. I didn't care so much before. It was enough that they run up o me for treats. But I had the BLRW from Del that was that way, and Sally. Now I miss the fact I don't have a tame bird around here.

it sucks @ss.

Arrrgh! You have your hands full - so sorry you lost Sally!

As to beating the dog with the dead chicken, I couldn't have done it with Sally. Another bird yes, but not her. The thought of doing anymore hurt to her was too much. But I did grab his muzzle with a feather hanging out of his mouth and screamed in his face "NOOO! LEAVE IT! LEAVE IT! LEAVE IT!" I then grabbed him by the collar, dragged him into the house, and put him into his crate with another loud NO bad dog.

The leash idea when working around the chickens is an idea I hadnt thought of. He is a bigger dog though. He has already busted up my knee by plowing into me several times. If I'm not ready for a full charge, I'm gonna be the one getting hurt. I might have to think if there's a way to do the leash exposure with getting myself killed in the process. Hhhmmmmm, old man had a good one there...

Yep, the rooster thing kinda sucks. To be honest, no body wants a rooster. I am leery of giving them away on Craigslist because I don't want thm used in cock fighting. Whether or not I want them, I don't want thm having that kind of life. I have gotten to thinking just cull as early as possible, when you know for sure it is a male. Less money wasted on feed, and the cull is easier. If you can cull and butcher then by all means, grow it out and have a meal! But I'm not there yet, so I'm picking the early cull route this year. (I say this knowing full well I have a RIR roo chick. Ggrrrrrrr, yes he needs to get done...)

I never said it would be easy.. I still have trouble killing small chicks .. I never have culled because of the sex of the bird.. I do butcher big birds.. No not Big Bird, CC,, sheese !!

it helps if you do not give names to the ones you know you will have to get rid of.. just call them the spotted one,, or the white one ,, etc..

my children used to name the animals,, but we still ate the cows, Chunky, Pokey, Buttercup, and a few more..

How old is this puppy now? Have you ever trained a dog before? Watch the Dog Whisperer? Holy man you have a lot on your hands here...... try not to use his crate as punishment too often or he is going to associate it as punishment and then you will have bigger issues. Crates are training tools of course, but not for reward/punishment. I know he is Halden's therapy dog, but he still needs training, and it is not as difficult as one would think. He does not need to be on a 6 foot leash when you are around the chickens, he should be on a short leash clipped to your belt-loop and you keep one hand on that leash to issue corrections when needed. Not when you are doing chores but at some point during the day when the chickens are roaming and you can get near them. It does not need to be for long periods of time either, 15-20 min work, just make sure you reward for good behavior IMMEDIATELY and correct the bad behavior IMMEDIATELY as well. Waiting to correct inappropriate behavior teaches your dog nothing since they have no idea what they have done wrong at that point. Stern voice, not a raised voice. Make him lay down and roll over so his belly is exposed and then have the chickens come over. Make sure he does NOT get up. He needs to be completely submissive around the birds, belly exposed and averted eyes. Anything less would get a correction. You need to show no fear; this dog needs to know he is at the very bottom of the hierarchy at you house. All other humans and animals are above his station in life. Poodles are very smart dogs; he should catch on pretty quickly.

I would say the next time you end up with a dead chick or chicken for unknown reasons, bring it to your dog (on a leash) and see what he does. ANYTHING other than a quick sniff and walk away should be corrected and of course have the chicken go after the dog too. I am sorry you are so far away! I am not trying to get on your case here, just trying to help you out!

my service berries are sweeter than my mulberries. I also have choke cherries all over in my woods. service berries may not be choke cherries IMHO
Agreed.

serviceberry:

Choke cherry: Prunus virginiana

The chokeberries, genus Aronia, are often mistakenly called chokecherries. This naming confusion is easy to understand considering there is a cultivar of the chokecherry Prunus virginiana 'Melanocarpa' and a species of chokeberry named Aronia melanocarpa. In fact, the two plants are not close relatives within their subfamily Spiraeoideae.

Oh jeez, now I have another type of berry I'm supposed to keep straight?! Thanks for nuthin' CC! :p

This dog o mine is 7 1/2 months old. He needs his balls removed as well, as this will supposedly help with impulse control. I don't know what it's gonna help with, other than may be removing that poisonous testosterone that is increasing his ideas of challenging me. Yep, he needs firm training alright. It's too bad my firm foot up his @ss wouldn't accomplish it. It would be much quicker! Here he has been better behaved the last week by following the most basic commands without being a punk. But I knew it wouldn't last. He has to go through a couple of classes. I wish I old afford to send him away to be trained. Yep, lazy way out, but I don't care. My plate is rather full a the moment, so I wish this didn't have to be added. But it does, so I will.

I just wish drinking heavily wouldn't make me fat. Because then I'd drink as much as CC and all my troubles would just melt away........

My dog ate 8 brats off the table while we were lighting sparklers outside. What can I beat him with? They were beer brats. Does that put a beer bottle into the possibilities for beatings?

Hi All!

Dan...Glad you found your Cayuga!

Bf4m.... So sorry about your Sally!

I agree,,, training and desensitizing! The sooner the better! Rudy came to us at 5 years old and we are still working wit him. So far he's only grabbed tail feathers, but we always watch and discipline right away. He's a lab so has allot of "chase" and "catch" in him. All these birds are very tempting! He does know the "leave it" command very well but as to be reminded often. Babylady gave good advice.

All this talk about berries!

I just can't get out and get them anymore! All the good stuff out in the woods and fields free for the taking. Grrrr. Yes, black raspberries are my absolute favorite too!

Found the "lost" chick! Must have just been "hiding". Pepper's 3 little ones have been hanging out with the orphan chicks the Doms left. Storky (Super Mom) is still mothering her 8 week olds!

Guess That's it.... Night All.... got to go pack eggs, then bed!
