Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Wow, I just read that one of the former contestants from the Bachlor TV show Gia Allemend (sp) committed suicide. Her current boyfriend found her hanging in her apartment. Apparently she wasn't dead but died later !!
She was a really cute and sweet girl (from what we knew of her on the show)
How sad. I guess it is true. Looks aren't everything.... she certainly had them and it wasn't enough to make her happy. Poor soul, may she rest in peace !

Well I have my new chickies all settled in. I wish I was able to do things more like bigfam but I am afraid my arrangement is more like rberry's. Not ideal and knowing where your birds came from is no guarantee, but these birds did come from Terri after all! Gave them a good once over and they were both clean as a whistle so they just got a light dusting of DE.
However, tho they were both pretty easy to handle, one is half again as big as the other with bravado to match which has me wondering, hen or roo? After watching them together, they do act kind of like a pair instead of just two girls. The smaller is clearly submissive. Hmmm, time will tell.

Terri - the website is goldenegg.spreadshirt.com for the CHICKEN SHIrT. If you back up to spreadshirt and search cat or kitty you'll also find some great stuff.

Bigfam - love the girls!

Rberry - thank you for the offer but I hope to get the best quality non-hatchery line roo I can, that is if I don't already have one !

vickiw: Interesting you mention dusting your new chicks with DE, my friend is giving me some that she won't ever use. I was planning to use it in my deep bedding this winter, but your post caught my attention since I will be picking up my eight new pullets this week. So . . . why the dusting and how? As far as the roos, I don't blame you for wanting the best quality. Not sure what the bloodline on my hatch is but I know they are non-hatchery. The farmer I got the fertilized eggs from (Emancipation Acres in Stoughton) is recently certified Animal Welfare Approved for laying hens and sheep.

Sclark: Wishing you a very speedy recovery and home real soon. My sister suffers with anxiety issue, my heart goes out to you

Bf4m: I'm having the same issues. We purchased our original flock from a woman whose daughter used to show in 4-H, but when she turned 16 she had no interest so this last batch were not handled and are skittish. I can touch about three of the seven full sized birds and none of the four bantams (except when one went broody). I'm determined to win over my hatchlings. I probably should have started handling them sooner, but since my broody hatched them I thought it was best to leave her be with them while in the "teaching" phase. Now mama wants absolutely nothing to do with them. I'll give the meal worms a try since my worm farm is now producing like crazy.
I wanna come to chicken canning class too! Sounds messy and educational.
I would also be interested in a chicken canning class. I plan to get back into more canning once I retire. It's embarrassing . . . both my Mother and Grandmother always canned. I did when we first started gardening and we were both working full time then. Hmmm - not sure where that person went to, funny how things change as we age.

Well break is over - I best get back at it. Have a great rest of the day!

well im finally home and severely miserable. They switched me from Vicodin to morphine as the Vicodin was only last a little over 2 hrs at a dose. Took the morphine after a long headache at pharmacy, Marshfield one was put so had to get from hospital and I never used them before so had to open an account which took forever. They didn't give me an antiinflamatory Med to take home and cancelled my ibuphrophen and its swelled up so bad everything from tongue to upper back pallet to throat it touching. Im suppose to be on strict rest for 2 weeks and that's not happening. Got home horses were out, cows were out and chickens needed to be fed and watered badly as I was suppose to be home by 9am. Anyhow son 12 decided he was gonna throw one if his lazy tantrums and took off in the woods until everything was done. And husband won't help as their not his animals, typical selfish man, son 14 helped but was hard w just us 2. I can see healing is gonna be miserable. Daughter moved out Monday, sure miss her help. She may cone stay tomorrow night to help me get rabbits and chicks ready for swap.

On brighter side my GLW hatched one chick so far, 6 more to go. Looks like they'll be a few more days yet. The bantam is down to 2 eggs, they also look to be a few more days from hatching. Buffy somehow aquired 2 more Buff chicks from reds crew.

You have a worm farm, right? What kind of worms? How big is it? Dad said I gotta start one so just gathering info..

WE could all meet at KristiP's house for the class.
it is kinda centrally located. She has a nice open kitchen, and is at work now during the day, so she wouldn't mind/know. LOL

HI BERRY - I use DE (like many on here) for just about everything. Dusting a bird with DE is a natural ( aka non-chemical) way of killing any little crawling things they might have picked up. You dust them like you would with any bug treatment. With big birds I use the old "shake and bake" method but I am much gentler with the babies. You just gently work some into their feathers making sure to get their tummies, vent area and their little wing "pits". When working near their heads be careful to keep it away from their faces and definitely out of their eyes (and yours). And keep the dust cloud to a minimum so neither of you is breathing it in. It's always a good idea, BTW to wear a dust mask whenever you are working with DE. If inhaled it could cause lung irritation. You know to always be sure you buy FOOD GRADE DEright? YEP, the stuff is used in human food products. Back to dusting. I also sprinkle some in their wallows, occasionally scatter it in their run and always put some under the wood chips on the catch board under the roost bar. Always keep the critters out of wherever you are working with the DE until you are done and the dust has settled. I also mix a little into their feed, tho not in the baby feed. Kitty and puppy get a little in their wet food occasionally as well. I am sure the more knowledgeable folks on here can give you even more advice/instruction.

I remember seeing millie flower there. Ok selection. It is mostly outdoors, and VERY cold.
I drive an hour for much less all the time :-) I know it is a waste of gas. And prices suck! (Gas) But I enjoy meeting new people!

Not sure what direction it is from you. Fond du lac swap is indoors, and a little better selection.
As fat as tourist attractions, I am unsure of things in Beaverdam...

Jim, I hope that lady shows! If not, you should give her the guilt trip about missing out on quality time with the daughters ;-)
Frenchie, good luck on monday!!! Sounds painfull!!
I've gone to the Fund du Lac swap with my sister before (she raises peafowl, swans, pheasants, geese, etc.) and people there have said the selection for chickens is better at the Beaver Dam swap. I'm looking for Mille Fleur Old English Game bantams and have not found any at the Minnesota swaps (yes, we have swaps here but it seems to be the same people selling the same kinds of birds.) I didn't realize this swap was outside though, I figured that late in the year it would be an indoor swap. I don't think I'll be coming to it just on the off chance of finding what I want but I do really appreciate the feedback. Thanks alot for all your answers!

Hello from Minnesota. I was wondering if anyone could give me any ideas on how big the Beaver Dam swap is? Are there alot of OEGBs (mostly looking for Mille Fleur old english) or any Seramas or Pincheons? It's close to an 8 hour drive, is it worth it and is there anything else interesting in the area if I would make a weekend of it? I'm thinking by the middle of October it will be too cold to camp, are there any cheap hotels in the area? Would you please PM me any info you have? Thanks a bunch!

I was there only once - it was ccccccold and there was snow on the ground. There were animals indoors and outdoors - the outdoor animals were, um, somewhat sketchy but those inside looked well cared for and clean. Met up with a bunch of BYC cheeseheads but I didn't buy any animals. Wish I could help more.

well, the lady did show up .. bought just two chickens.. a white rock and a barred rock.. she has enough red chickens, she said..

However,, the other party just called me and is interested , yet.. might come tonight..

I got to play with Ollie today.. I hauled the large brush pile to the burn pile.. then I re-mowed that long grass area and blew the dried grass into windrows with the rider mower set up to the highest level.. then I took Ollie down there and pushed the windrow into a big pile.. loaded up a full bucket and brought it back for bedding for the coops.. I still have two more bucket fulls left to pick up..

as long as I was at it, I used the loader on Ollie to yank out a few extra plum trees.. now I can mow in among them.. I will end up with 4 plum trees.. maybe next year I will get some plums if the blossoms don't freeze and if all the bees don't die..

I smell apple pie,, I am supposed to take it out of the oven,, i forgot

and the guy just now called, he is on his way for the chickens..

later
