Thanks French. When I had originally called Barron one of the vets said it was MG, when i called back again to get an update on the other tests vet working on my case said he didn't know where the first vet found that info but he said it showed it was negative. He said the first vet may have read the wrong persons report. I got the papers from the autopsy a few weeks ago and it stated that he had an intestinal parasite-etiology Hexamita and nothing else. I got a big scare from nothing.

I'm not surprised !! I heard that a lot in the past. They talk to one vet... they say one thing..... call back, talk to a different vet get a different story.
Just like humane doctors. I think most of the time you are getting their 'Educated GUESS' !!! Sad but true. What's even scarier is when you call the third vet/doctor and get a THIRD diagnosis. Or when it comes to human doctors, they change their thinking from one appointment to another.... gotta wonder sometimes how humans and animals alike have survived this long... Must be in spite of modern medicine !!!

Reminds me of what my old late Auntie would always say.."That's why they call them PRACTICING physicians!" LOL

Did the vet suggest good things to worm chickens with? My dogs just got their dose of heartgaurd. And thecats biospot. It gets me thinking about the chickens again. I give garlic and kiane (sp) pepper. But always wonder if I should do more.

on the autopsy report it said to use oxy-tet as this parasite is very rare in chickens so that explains why after giving it to them the day I dropped off Jamal in Barron within 3 days nearly all symptoms were gone. I plan on worming this afternoon with Ivermectin( anyone have the dose? I thought it was a pea size per adult bird, but what about the younger ones). We plan in moving some birds today so figured it would be a good time to do it. Tipsy is going back free range and Willy(pb speckled Sussex is getting 4 ss ladies. Siless(lav orp ) is going in coop with BO and black split. Gold and silver wyondottes and blrw are getting moved to Blues(blrw) pen. So confusing but after daughter reminded me it sounded good. When Pretty Boy(slw) gets old enough, id say another month orhens so GLW and slw will go with him. I have to build yet another coop. I already have 8 as it is.

With all that being said, even though a vaccinated birds still will get Mareks disease their risk of developing the fatal tumors is greatly reduced, thus not loosing it to this horrid disease or having to put it down.
Then there are those that want to breed for resistance...... at least that is what they think they are doing because their birds don't get Mareks does not mean they are immune (again my opinion) That being said, if they haven't lost any birds to Mareks disease either means they do not have it in their flocks, they have not been exposed, they have developed an inmmunity (which I doubt, again my opinion) or they are just Lucky !

Their are a few breeds of chickens that supposedly are more prone to Mareks.... from what I've read. Silkies are one of them and I can't remember what the others are, one of the dark brown egg layers CRS has kicked in. (again that is just what I've heard)
I've heard that people have been told by State Veterinarians that Mareks is everywhere !!! I think there are different strains though. I know some of it affects the eyes, another they get the tumors that cause the lameness and then there is another virus that has the same symptoms as Mareks and I can't recall that one right now. It starts with an L...... something or other ??
I used to vaccinate my chicks when I hatched them out myself. The key is to vaccinate them at one day old. I seldom did it on day one !!! So maybe it was useless. When I order my chicks I always order the vaccine however with my orders this spring I lost a lot of chicks. The hatchery said the stress of the shipping and stress of vaccinations most likely contributed for their loss since they said the vaccinations are stressful for them. No doubt and I'm not sure how gentle they are or who does it ???
So.... can you see.... for every reason to vaccinate there is another not to !!!! So basically it is an individual choice. Just another fact..... say you have all vaccinated birds and you hatch or purchase unvaccinated birds or chicks and the new chicks develop Mareks..... FACT.... they did not get it from your vaccinated birds BECAUSE they were Vaccinated !! They got if because they were either carriers OR from some place else NOT because the first birds were vaccinated and the new birds weren't. You can mix vaccinated and non vaccinated birds. Don't let anyone tell you differently. Remember the Mareks Vaccine is made from type of Mareks that turkeys get, it will not cause Mareks disease even if it doesn't prevent it (hope that makes sense)

FT...ye Lattes the one from the bash that ive been treating ever since. She seemed to get better but was always skin and bones. I treated for cocci..antibiotics for respitory infectikn and finally for worms. Yesterday she started tucking her head under her body..like a hen roling eggs under her....then she would topple or somersault. It was very sad and would have been se@fish of me to try further treatments as she was obviously beginning to suffer

Sounds like she developed Wry neck..... which some believe is a vitamin deficiency. Poor Lattes.....

She had a good life with you ! I could see that at the bash, how much she was already loved. So sorry for your loss. I have a few that are very special to me as well. Sunny, a showgirl rooster. He's my bud. Hope he is with me for a long time. I think I am going to pair him up with a paint silkie to see if I can get some paint showgirls. Sunnys kids !!!
