Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Morning...reading intermittently and helping DD load her car. I dont think she will be totally moved out EVER! I said, "Yeah, now I will have two new rooms!" She said something to the effect that Mom's dont say that if they love their kids. (well, OK...thanks.) LOL--I should have met Frenchie long ago...then maybe I would have just had animals and not had kids either!

They spent the night in their carrier when they first got here because it was just too cold to put them out. Then they were moved to their new "digs". The third day they were let out into their run and free to come in and out as they pleased. Then they were pretty much left alone except when I had to scoot them in at night because they were really skittish. Figured there was plenty of time for them to get to know me after they adjusted to their new life. Besides, I wanted to limit contact until I was sure I wasn't going to cross infect them with the older girls IB. (which appears to be cleared up, thank the Lord). and the bratty 3 amigas occasionally squak at them across the fence because they are now in their old digs and get to play on their favorite tower. brats. Haven't talked to Al yet about her chicks. Holiday and all she is hard to catch but when I do I'll let you know. I know that there are so many strains of cocci they could have arrived with it and were fine but the stress put them at risk, it could have already been here from my girls and I missed something and they picked it up, maybe the little one just has a weaker system (she was gaining a lot of ground on the bigger one tho) who knows??? It's like trying to figure out where the first kid picked up the measles!

I HATE having to resort to drugs but some things just don't have a viable "plan B" and I know of none for cocci that actually works. Going out now to check them and start dosing.
BTW - since the contact is limited, I'm not going to treat the rest of the flock unless I see a real reason to. Besides, I think they've had enough dosing for a while.

Unkadan - I really do believe that "if it ain't broke don't fix it". With my other hens, I had one that was so desperately ill I had no choice but to do the right thing and cull her. Within 24 hours my other girls started showing differing degrees of the same symptoms and I acted quickly, and appears correctly, so that I would not have to cull my entire little flock. Any animal husbandry is never an exact science and in the end we all have to rely on our own common sense. My biggest mistake was to return to flock raising with rescued hens that I knew were in very poor condition from the beginning but had no idea how truly unhealthy they were.

Amazingly, I've been coordinating the hay sales just right so when he fills wagons I have someone there to buy it. I had a lady yesterday that was really rude to me. But everyone else has been wonderful and really happy to have found cheap hay. But I can't wait to be done!

Yesterday I noticed I now have sneezing/coughing in my coop and some diahria in my flock. I am sure they now have whatever Latte had at the end. Xanadu that was with her seems fine. I have been reading everything I can on what type of respitory infection this could be and more confused and scared than ever!! It sounds as though antibiotics will do nothing more than prevent secondary infections but will not cure any of these-more of a sit and wait. I put vitamins in their waterers. I have duramycin on hand and can possibly get tylan from BBP. Any suggestions on which of these to use? I stopped at Fleet Farm yesterday and they didnt have anything other than duramycin available to treat. My eggs have ropped from 12-15 a day down to 6-8 in the last 3 days also. Im scared.
don't know what to say other than after talking with Dr. Brown, poultry vet, aka The Chicken Doctor, I put my girls showing similar symptoms on Duramycin at his recommended rate of ! Tablespoon per gallon and I was seeing improvement the next day. BTW, Duramycin loses potency quickly once it's mixed so what I did was split the dose in half and mix it twice a day. (for me that worked out to 1/2 tbl. in 1/2 gal. water twice a day).
Don't know if it helps but I just wanted to share what worked for me.

Well, today is the day picked for Amy's little boy to enter the world. I think I said 5:45pm.... just when the doctor has sat down for dinner.... so pack the car Amy and get ready !!!!! LOL

Quote: So did you get to FF ? I noticed there was an off brand for their powder Corrid I think was on sale the last time I was there. Cheaper then Corrid.

Anyway, I don't know if you know this but Dr Brown is not a Vet or Doctor. Somehow he just acquired the Dr title because he helps chickens and sells meds. Just thought I would share that with anyone else too that might think he is a Veterinarian.

Cocci sure is a weird illness. I've had chicks develop it that never hit real ground. So where did they get it ? Wonder if it can be carried in the feed ?

It supposedely lives in the soil so ???? I think you are doing the right thing treating just the two newer birds. Hope it works out for you with the two new Amigos. Oh wait aren't Amigos boys? Sorry for all the chicken swearing !!! LOL

Cindlady...... where was your husband yesterday.... driving around up nort ??? LOL Wow, that's pretty scary too. Does he ever fall asleep while he drives?

I think this week has been so interesting in so many ways, Unk are you ready to recap the month of August for us ??? LOL Let's test your memory !! LOL
Happy Labor Day Everybody !!!! Drive safe the FIBS are out !!! LOL jk.....

Hey Angibuds...... I finally got into my pool for the first time two days ago.... better late then never. To cold today....maybe later ??? Anyway, can you taste the salt in you pool ? Ours is very salty. I float like an Egg !!! Seems much easier to swim and move about with the salt water..... I didn't ache when I got out of it either..... Nice... just wish it was the beginning of summer instead of the end. Hoping for a long HOT fall. Have you noticed that difference with you pool water ?

FT: Glad your pool is set up and ready to go!! I asked my daughter who uses the pool the most and she said she hasnt noticed any salty taste. The saltwater filter we have shows if correct amount of salt is in there-does yours? I know what you mean about the weather! She is back to school tomorrow and I dont feel like shes gotten much use of the pool this summer. IF it warms up enough we may go in this afternoon.

I just sent dawg53 a message explaining my situation and asking for advice. I treated Latte with Corid, Duramycin-10, and ivermectrin over the past few months. I am thinking she got a secondary resp. infection and that is what she passed on to the flock. Her buddy that was kept with her seems just fine. In reading about the different medications on medical sites, it seems as though duramycin only treats a couple of issues, and tylan a lot more...the comparison charts of symptoms-this could be any one of several different resp issues. I want to try tylan but need to get the correct dosage. I have seen recommendations for anywhere from 1.5 tsp a gallon to 1 tsp per 5 gallons..so waiting to hear back from him. I am scared as it seems antibiotics will only prevent further infections not cure resp infections. Oh and somehow in my stupidity, I moved the two chickens out into main flock 2 weeks ago (thought she was getting better, was leaving on vacation, and chickensh$t has been pushing to get them out of his shop for months) so this illness is completely my fault and I so upset with myself over this!

(Did I mention that my oldest daughter 25 (Adopted at 7 with many mental health issues) seems to be going downhill and is rejecting all help? ARGH!)

Hope to hear back from dawg soon so I can get them started on meds....need to go clean house-hope everyone is enjoying their day off today!!

I swear this is Monday the 13th......

Try to make a nice breakfast for the kiddos to celebrate the end of summer. I should have stuck with cereal....... but no, I decided to make sausage, pancakes AND waffles! (We were out of bacon). To make the waffles I need self-rising flour. No big deal I can mix up my own which I did. The I make the waffle batter since it needs to sit for 40 min before use and of course I follow the recipe and do not think twice about the ingredients. Send youngest DS to the store for buttermilk since I need it for the pancakes (trying to sour fresh milk with vinegar does not work well). I tell him SPECIFICALLY to grab the Big Slam of buttermilk, it is in the green bottle. He comes home with a pt of heavy whipping cream and tells me they are completely out of buttermilk. I tell him to go back to the store, get my $ back and ask for buttermilk. If they do not have it run to the Star Dairy and get it there. He proceeds to have a hissy fit in the yard and destroys the pt of cream in the process.

( I told you Heather, this German/Irish mix is volatile!) So now I have a big puddle of heavy cream in the lawn and trails of the stuff going to the trash can. I tried to rescue whatever I could but the entire container was smashed in the bag. Sent oldest DS to the store for said buttermilk and of course he finds it. I proceed with the pancakes and start making the waffles. I get everything finished up and we start eating...... and my youngest DS starts asking me if the waffles are supposed to be super salty...... yeah, they tasted like super salty crackers with syrup on them. Of course I now remember that I should have omitted the salt I added to the waffle batter because of the SRF......

I wish I had some chickens to feed these yucky waffles to.

At least I did not wreck the coffee.

Time for a shower and see what else I can wreck today.

Well...I'm not a true Cheesehead but I do live here in Wisconsin, about 4 miles east of Crivitz. I moved here from Philly 11 months ago, my wife is from Twin Bridges (her folks used to own the Tall Oaks store). I'm betting a few Up North people know exactly who I'm talking about. So I'm new to the pleasures of managing a flock of chickens. I had no idea how much fun these birds are, not to mention the range of personalities.

I have a problem with a bird in the flock. I have always been one to root for the underdog, in this case the underchicken. She was free, took her with us when we purchased a couple of more young hens as my confidence and skills increased. It's a young Frizzle and it's missing many of it's feathers. There are no pin feathers coming in, as of yet anyway. My first question is....what can cause this, second question is how to solve it. If a solution fails I have to find a way to provide real heat for this poor bird during the winter. Which brings it's own issues. The others will be trying to vie for that warmth but economics doesn't allow for me to heat the entire coop to 60 degrees. I want to provide an area so the bird has heat, but companionship as well. This problem is what caused me to find this site. I went searching and here I am! Of course I'll be looking for my answers for myself but will happily accept information, advice and experience from the members here.

I agree about the Tylan. I used Duramycin because it was all I could get my hands on. plz keep us posted on what you learn.
