Wolves in Waupaca!

Late last night we got home after working on one of the rooms at the store. Just before I hit the button to close the garage door I heard a howl. I told the hubs it sounded like a wolf. Half a minute later that howl was answered by another and another and another until there was a great chorus of howls from what sounded like a good sized pack. It was chilling. We have the occasional bear show up around here and there is a fox in residence on the lot next door but I've never seen or heard wolves this far south. No late night strolls for me in this part of the woods!!

Congrats to all who had birds in the show!!

Sounds like coyotes to me Irish.... we have both around here...the shrill cries and yelps are the yotes

Sure is nice weather we are having....I need to clean the chimney yet before I need to fire-up.

My mind was totally blown yesterday. I realize now how sheltered of a life I lead. We had dinner/watched the game with some of my husbands new business partners. They specialize in promoting new companies. There was also a corporate attorney there that presently works for Target Corp. Anyway, they were talking about how they are the ones responsible for creating a sales team as well as setting the market price for these 3D printers that are sitting in a warehouse waiting for release. Do you guys know what a 3D printer is? They picked up a bottle and said, you add the material to the machine and it will make this bottle. It had the ability to make anything. An Ipad, someday food. CREEPY! I guess they are used quite a bit right more to make custom wrenches and things. I can't even fathom people just having these things sitting around their house.

We use the 3d imaging here to make prototypes of picture frames, but you can make most anything but the end result is made of plastic at this time. I saw a YouTube video where they created a real working plastic gun... The items made can be very fragile depending on the type of plastic and the finishing process.

As to wolves, I remember one night waking up to howling and then next morning seeing the "wolf" turns out it was a "hybred" The owners had been in a car accident and the "dog" got lost in the shuffle of amublances etc on the interstate. But boy were we scared in our neighborhood for awhile till we figured out it was "tame" I know they had to try and get her back themselves if the Human Society were to get invloved they would have to put her down. Still the most eerie sound I have ever heard was the howl... Not like a coyote or anything else I have heard...

Momgille, when I worked at tue humanesociety, we got in a wolf hybred for rabies observation. It was six, and lived with a lady who babysat her 6year old grandson. They were together si ce babies. The wolf turned on the boy. Mauled him. It was so sad. It was vicious. It just turned. One of my very worst memories. I still sometimes have night mares. He was so bad we could not take him out. Just hose the kennel and throw food durring observation. We had to noose him in the kennel and pull under the bars and put him down from the outside. It was horrific.
I tell the story, because I think hybreds are wild animals and need to be raised that way. Should never be kept as pets.

ABSOLUTELY!!!! Amen Cuties! I have sung that song to whomever would listen for as long as I can remember. A wolf is not a dog and crossing one with a dog is like painting A loaded gun pink. No matter how cute you make it look, it's still dangerous. I am a firm believer that breeding and/owning them should be completely against the law.

Momgille is also right. If you've ever heard a wolf, you'll never confuse them with a coyote. We have way too many coyotes around here and we are also at the southern end of the range of a large wolf that passes through our place every fall. We've never seen it with any others but we have heard his howl. We know when he's around because we see him at the edge of our field and the yotes vanish.

Related to the wolves, we have them here regularly. The coyotes (brush wolves) make a great racket when they are on a kill which is usually when dark or just before dawn. The Great Greys usually howl back and forth at night. The coyotes are more likely to bother chickens, and the Great Greys are normally in search of larger prey.
The Great Grey pack that is in residence here was thinned by 4 within a mile or less of my place last winter, but young of the year are likely to have replaced those and then some.

Irish, a few years back a female wolf was hit by a car by the Fox River Mall. It is not surprising that there might be a few roaming in the area.

Those 3D printers are pretty cool, my Uncle has one.

Not much going on in this little corner. Getting over this horrible cold. I stopped in a Fox today just for a moment and ended up working for 3 hours! Tomorrow will be the clean-up day and set-up for the next round of labs. Then back to the fun house.

Wow, did I have an amazing day! Hope you don't mind my sharing since most is not chicken related but for you doubters it could make you believe in miracles. My morning started super early, but was rewarded with a beautiful sunrise. Had to be at hubby' s dr by 8 am for labs so to be there on time, it was out the door at 7. The miracle part comes while DH is in the dr. I drive over to the social security office with the intent of picking up information on applying for early benefits, AND 45 Minutes later I walked out of there totally registered and promised I would receive my first check in a little over 2 WEEKS!!! I might add that most of that time was spent waiting my turn for what I thought was to talk to someone who could answer my questions and give me the correct forms. The rep was smiling, polite, and extremely helpful and well trained. I walked out with a huge smile and actually started laughing in amazement when I got outside.

Bet you couldn't get that done in Milwaukee!!!

Oh, and hubby got a 100% on his annual

Miracle #2 - tho much smaller but chicken related, I actually got the little Aussie to eat from my hand today. She didn't want to, but her really wanting that bit of yummy cat food was stronger than her leariness of me. The big guy was right there but just dove for the bits she dropped. Baby steps. I think they are both healthy enough that I can start making friends. I want to be able to.at least approach them before I put them into the rest of the flock because I know the feathers are probably going to fly (those spoiled brat amigas) and I need them to trust me if I have to intervene. Oh, and the second worming produced NO adult round worms and no more tissue or blood. Wish now I would have went ahead with the valbazen.
