ok question... can a chicken get frostbite besides the comb? My little roo looks ok(not dropping wings or puffed up) but his legs look reddish... and he is hopping from one foot to the other...would you either hook up the heat lamp outside or bring him in the garage in a dog kennel with heat lamp for a little bit?

My little roo looks ok(not dropping wings or puffed up) but his legs look reddish... and he is hopping from one foot to the other...would you either hook up the heat lamp outside or bring him in the garage in a dog kennel with heat lamp for a little bit?

I would hook up a heat lamp, securely, out in the coop off to one side so all the chickens can go warm up if they need to. Bantams are especially affected by the cold, so a heat source is a very good idea.

Yes, birds can get frostbite in other areas of their bodies besides their comb. As an added measure, you could put a layer of vaseline on his feet/legs to help protect them from the cold. I did that on some of my roosters combs yesterday. HTH.

good late evening, I was watching Bonnie and Clyde.. the second episode started out boring, so here I am..

Chickens bounce back from hypothermia quite well.. I once found one frozen inside a cement block.. IDK how long she was in there, but I had to pour warm water on her to melt the ice so I could remove her.. other than a few lost feathers she was fine... she lived.. and then three days later, I made soup out of her.. Not really ..

Yes Terri, I keep the light on 24/7/365 unless it burns out.. I turn it off on leap year.. I don't want to over do it..

water is very important if you want eggs.. winter air is low in humidity, so they need more water than they do in the summer.. I have about 40 to 50 chickens in that one coop.. they go through about 2 of the waterers per day.. 5 gallons ? IDk how much that waterer holds..

I am going to mark this day on the calender 3 people agreed with me .. some sort of record for sure..

Good idea to check him out and see what it could be. It might just be hormonal if he is a young bird and reaching sexual maturity. The feet and legs get a little red. You will notice it more in March. Check the bottom of his feet to make sure nothing is frozen on or between his toes.

So sorry Jeline Sounds like you did everything you could for her!

I am so tired of this cold!!! For the first time in 3 years, there were ice crystal specks on the inside walls of the coop this morning! Which means I have too much moisture in there and not sure what to do about it....as opening up the coop with the windchills as bad as they are and negative temps isnt a good idea either. (Yes I have a couple girls who are moulting too)

I think I may break down and buy one of those "Sweeter Heaters"-has anyone here used them or know anyone that has???

Windy Cold Day To All.... I've looked at them angiebubs, and am dealing with the frost inside in places too. I have a real hard time providing heat in the coops for the birds. I always have at least 7 month old birds going into winter, and for me just can't justify the heat to healthy normal birds. Providing they always have water and good feed in a dry coop without drafts...they actually do better than the heat of summer. It would be nice for me though, to have the heated coops.

Yep, hard to believe the Pack actually beat a team with only 3 wins....made em look pretty good though....one point from another tie....LOL! Rodgers hopefully will be back for the boys.....they need another win for sure.

Gotta love good neighbors...jennie's neighbor in town received a ham and turkey from his employer and said he didn't want them, cause he didn't know how to cook them.....jennie said sure I'll take them and give them to my mom and dad.....sweet....I'll be cutting ham steaks fore long. I have visions of good meals....I'll send him a thanks card and a $20... and it's still a good deal...
