Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Argh! It's cold out there in this wind! A few of the girls have been complaining about it loudly so I bought a lamp for them today when I went to FF for feed. (And they are eating a LOT more feed now that they can't forage!) Maybe I can get the hubs to hook it up over the roost before he goes in for surgery on his knee Friday. I'm still getting one or two pullet eggs a day but today I also got one in the favorite nest from one of the big girls. So, production is up 100%.

I hope it continues to improve so that they'll be earning their keep this winter.

Mom went down to FL after Thanksgiving and we have been having problems with her mail. We did the change of address on line and it looks correct there but I've been getting mail from FL forwarded here. The advice I'm getting from our helpful PO people here and in FL is to NOT do it on line but do it in person at the Post Office. Apparently our government has lots of problems with computers these days!

I ran into this disturbing piece of news from WBAY this morning: http://www.wbay.com/story/24182438/...facing-investigation-over-hidden-camera-video Some of it is pretty disturbing.

Stay warm and comfy when you can!

Darn phone.... :/
Thx everyone. Sorry to hear of the other losses around too. Sorry i didn't mention it in previous post.
I'm done with winter already !yuck
All my chickens are still laying,so i haven't thought ofadjustingthe time. I didn't want them trying to get to the roost after lights out. ?

Hi all--am leaving to take the Beagle (that lots of you have met) to the vet this afternoon---well I started this a long time ago! Turned out that just as I was typing I should have been leaving.

So the vet visit went well. Liza is anemic with mature and immature white blood cells according to her blood tests. All of her organs are working well though (the good news) The vet thinks that either her cells are attacking each other and killing red blood cells as in a autoimmune reaction or she has cancer. There are a ton of reasons that you go into an autoimmune reaction so we are trying steroids to calm it down and also vitamin K just in case she did find some of the rat poison. (highly unlikely but he said it is cheap and wont hurt her. I hope it works!

I just scrambled up a few eggs for one of the cats, the parrot and Tommy(the house roo) I collected too late and a few had frozen and cracked. Two of them actually smelled off so I tossed those. Funny how quickly they can spoil if there is a crack in the shell and when perfect, they can lay in a nest for two weeks and another 23 days and hatch into perfect little birds! Eggs truly are amazing!

I lost two more young birds today. I hate to say it but whoever said not to have young birds during this time of year was RIGHT. God, I only hope it wasnt Jim! His head is getting big enough with all the folks agreeing with him lately!

Sorry to hear of your Dad's passing AmyB. That is so tough on a person...especially around the Holidays. My DH hates Christmas now for that very reason. Prayers to you and yours! I think he must have been with you hunting though; that is a gorgeous trophy you will have! (and I KNOW you were the one to shoot it!)

OK--time to finish up making dinner...Have a great night everyone! Cant wait until Saturday to see some of you...nd YES BigFam--get yourself out of the house and join us! You need a break once in a while and who better to spend time with than chicken friends?
Night! TerriO

What I do is have the light come on early in the morning. Then it goes out at 8 AM. The birds can go to roost normally then and still get the right amount of light. But geez...if yours are all still laying I wouldnt do a thing! December 22 the light starts getting longer...maybe you just lucked out?

What I want to know is why does it take so much longer for the days to get longer? It sure seems like they get shorter in a hurry!

My molting birds are starting to lay. However I now have two young birds decide this is a good time to go broody. One is a BCM. I am new to BCM and had no idea they are broody birds. She just started laying two months ago. Crazy stuff. I am just glad my poisoning them has not done too much damage to most of them. I am done with the meds and can start eating the eggs next week.
I am moving the SLW tomorrow since they are not laying yet to the small coop..it is too darn cold for them to be in the A frame.

Keep warm all...

Jim, you are right again! Somebody write this down........

Fingers crossed the rescue picks up the dog on Friday. I really want him to go to a good home. He is completely worth it.

Today I went to work at the UW. Since it is the end of semester, I was doing a lot of clean-up work. One of the animal Bio students had a surprise, she brought in a piglet! Her sow and birthed her litter the night before, and this one was kicked aside, so the girl though she should give it a chance. When I first saw it it was kicking a wriggling a lot, so I was pretty hopeful it would make it. Imagine my surprise (and hers) that within 20 minutes the poor baby would be dead. It was pretty sad but those instincts in the sow were spot on. At least the poor little guy was given a chance. I even dug out the pediatric stethoscope so we could make certain the heart had stopped. It is very eerie to put a stethoscope on a warm body and hear absolutely nothing......... poor thing.

Amy, my condolences.

Deli, glad to hear your birds are on the mend.

BigFam, you EVER going to shoot some pics of those fluffy Hershey butts and share?

Dang, is it ever going to warm up? This can end right now. I like some snow and 30* temps; this arctic stuff is for locos......

Well Dipsh-t I posted them a few months ago? About 756 posts ago. So feel free to page back that far or click on my name to see my pics. Geez, I put them on for you. Good to know my effort was appreciated... ;-)

Besides... You can see them in person soon enough! Oh how you'll love my Georgie too.

And Jim... George is a girl! So I guess I'll have goose eggs sometime. Anyone actually EAT goose eggs?!

Wouldn't you know, I come back from the dead here and Unks not around? Schmuck... :-D

I'm going to try to go back to sleep. Insomnia blows...
