Maybe check for depluming mites for those losing feathers. The neck area can be affected. Just sayin.

I never heard of a depluming mite...I'll have to look that up. I've heard of feather mites but they just eat the web as far as I know. She has new neck feathers coming in that's why I thought she might be going through a second molt.

It is calling for record lows on Monday night..Joe wants me to move all of my birds to one coop..I think all the blood spill from rooster being confined to one coop would not be a good thing. Those boys like it the way it is. I might have to add a bit more straw instead.
-34? I do not think we have ever had it that cold. Minnesota is going to get it worse.

if those mites come out only at night, why not just leave a light on 24/7 ?

I have never found any bugs in my fleet layer crumbles.. are you talking about pantry moths ? they seem to sprout up in feed that has been opened for awhile..
I don't have that problem because feed doesn't last that long around here.. 50 pounds lasts only a couple to a few days ..don't your chickens eat bugs ?

I left all the coops open yesterday,, everybody went back in at dusk.. I think some of the guineas went in with the laying hens,, I had to chase all of the geese out of the chicken coop.. but all in all it went well..

I didn't hear anything about -34* F ?? when is that supposed to take place ? is that part of this global warming ?

I got new PJ's for Christmas.. they are flannel and nice and warm, and I think they are women's ..
the buttons are on the wrong side and there is no PeePee hole..
but as long as I don't wear them out in public, nobody will know..

Nope, not meal moths. What I had were grain mites....If you feed a full bag at a time you might not notice them. They were in the non-med chick feed and after I switched the first batch of chicks to pellets I had a half bag of crumbles left. I thought the feed had a lot of dust in it but after that bag sat for a few days they started crawling out so I knew it wasn't just fine, dusty feed. There are probably millions/billions of them in a bag of feed and they look like fine, tan sawdust on the floor around the bag or as a layer of 'dust' on top of the feed. If they got on my arm I could feel them crawling but couldn't see them they're so tiny.
I put the other half dozen bags of chick feed in a big chest freezer and fed the next couple batches of chicks cold feed right from there. Freezing seemed to slow the mites down some.

Some things I've read say the mites degrade the feed. I don't know if I'm fully convinced of this but I try to mix up different brands anyway in case one brand is lacking something.

Morning...still snotty but I think I am FINALLY coming out of it! I tried to give this cold to as many people as possible yesterday...today I am laying low...but heading to the movies at noon to see if I can give more of it away! (just kidding you literalistic folk!)

I had those grain mites in my mealworm colony once. Almost killed off the whole thing too. It was so weird...they were on the top of the container and as I watched they kind of "flowed" over the edge. That is how I knew they were alive! It came from the bag of wheat bran I used to start them up. Now I microwave all grain products before I add it to them to be sure I dont get them again. They were creepy...and they do look like moving dust!

I better head outside to feed the critters...and I think I will blanket horses too. Chilly couple of days on the way to be sure...but I didnt hear -34! Unless that's the wind chill? (wind thrill for Dan--I love that!)
