Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi all! The oldest boy had his first MAQA meeting tonight. It was nice talking with other people, and I found out that our chickens aren't the only ones with frostbitten combs. Luckily, it's not too bad. Does anyone put vaseline on their combs? I haven't, but I've heard and read mixed opinions on the subject. Any thoughts?

I have. But is a PITA if you have more than 1 or 2 roos. And who wants to take their gloves off to do it in these crap temps? I prefer using a heat bulb.

I still have a couple boys that got a little frostbite on their combs, though, but this weather has been a bit extreme this year.

good morning,, it looks cold out there,

I have no frostbite so far.. I wonder if it is because I used supplemental heating ..

The guinea lady says that a rooster with frostbite will shoot blanks ..just sayin'..IDK
this is one of the female puppies.. she weighs 4 pounds at a little over 2 weeks old..
my foot is there for size comparison.. the males are a bit larger ..

Quote: Touching frost bite might cause more damage..that tissue is pretty fragile. The Vaseline is for preventative measures..not for treatment. Just watch for swelling. You might need to add more ventilation in the coop. It is the infection that causes so much damage so keep a close watch on it. The tips on all of my combs have a bit of color this year.
I normally never promote heating coops..it is too dangerous..but we are having extremes. I put a register in one coop for added heat for the old and young birds. I turn it on when the weather is below 0. My poor electric bill. Joe is going to kill me. It is going on day 23 for temps below 0 in a row.

good morning folks,

a bit of experience with frostbite on my BCM males here,,,,didn't affect fertility one bit the last 2 years,,,, Nu-Stock will help with the healing process,,,,vaseline didn't do anything to prevent it with my boys

my big old coop is very dry and well vented,,,the smaller coop is insulated and does carry more moisture occasionally,,,,combs have been frost bitten in both contrary to popular thinking. I think there is more to it than that,,,perhaps when the hormones are raging in a breeding male and the blood flow is increased it exposes them to getting frosted,,,dunno just some observations

Jim do you wear the sandals under those winter socks?

Teri,,,,we need info and your report on the new hoses (yeah I voted so cough it up)

You know it's cold when....... My husband sent me this picture. Last night he filled up this gallon jug with water from our frost-free hydrant. He then walked to the coop in the back (over 300 ft away), set it on the ground while he openned up the coop door. When he went to fill the waterer he found that it had a 1/4inch of ice that had already formed.

As my husband puts it... it just dang STUPID COLD.

Keep warm everyone!!

Teri I can no vote. No fb.
Somebody vote for me :D
Cute pups Jim!

The duckling is still with us. He just does not seem to have good balance. I will just give it time.
We have frostbite here. Now there is a space heater in the coop. And heat lamps VERY secured inthe breeder pens.
I cried a little when I got the last electric bill.
