Is there a 'magic temperature' when it is safe to have fertilized eggs shipped? If it is supposed to be warmer next week (around 30~) is there still a chance they will freeze coming across country? I know most sellers bubble wrap them, does that give them any insulation? I REALLY need some eggs going into my bator, but don't want to be out the $$ if they arrive frozen.
Thanks!

Nothing magical about shipping eggs..you can have perfect temps and 0 hatch. Shipping and hatching is a huge risk. I just shipped a dozen eggs to WV. I am shipping on Wednesday to NY. There are things that can be done to improve your chances of better egg hatch. Eggs are guaranteed through the PO. You have to file and have the box marked correctly to be covered. Most egg sellers and shippers do not know how to mark the box or that eggs are covered by the PO and most PO employees do not know they are covered either. If you are purchasing eggs and spending money..know all you can about shipping to inform the shipper.

What type of eggs do you need that you want them shipped?

I wish you weren't so far away, that would be perfect.
I have a quad coming this spring..I can bring eggs to the bash if they are laying..If you are still in need.

good evening, I would not have eggs sent across country right now .. sometimes they fly them in air cargo and no amount of bubble wrap will withstand that kind of cold..

have the person sending them guarantee that they will arrive in perfect shape.. IDK< maybe they can request ground travel ?? I still think it is risky..

can't you find some eggs closer that you could drive to pick up ??

Nice self portrait Terri ..

looks like Annie will be home for a couple more days,, her client is still in the hospital showing no improvement ..

One of these days I should start getting the incubators ready.. I would like to get some of that stuff to wipe the plexiglass doors with to renew the transparency .. or at least give them a good washing with soapy water ..

I agree about the shipping..

You can pay for overnight..that is a huge help
You can wait till it is above freezing
You can add hand warmers...there is a trick to adding those also..if the box gets to hot you can damage the eggs..those hand warmers get to 107 degrees.
Priority Express comes with insurance and guarantees. You have to purchase additional insurance over $50.00 if you spend over $50.00. The eggs are guaranteed..there are steps you have to go through and it has to be done at the PO.

I found someone in Michigan who will ship some Swedish Flower eggs. What breed is your quads? Where did you order them? My son also wants some Favorelles, but haven't seen anyone around here yet breeding those. I was thinking about finding a silver Ameraucana roo for my hens, but I can't find anyone anywhere who sells those.
My first BLRW for the year hatched..I set 3 BLRW and 3 Orpingtons Mid hatch..
So cute! I hope I have some hatching at the end of the week.

If you go to the Wisconsin International show site you can find the name of Favorelles breeders right here in Wisconsin. Ton of them and beautiful ones too.
I am getting a quad of SFH when it is safe to ship from Karen Anderson

Silvers are hard to find..have you called any of the Ameraucana breeders on the list at all?

I appreciate all your advice. I will try to find the Wi show site you mentioned. Haven't looked into Ameraucanas seriously yet. I want to take a pic of my girls and get some feedback before I would breed them. They are pretty small for LF, but really nice temperments, and good layers. I got them from CraigsList from someone selling them from a friend, so it was kind of a risk. But they are pretty sweet.

Hi All!

Bl4... Great pics.! I would love to go there too. I have been to Ashland a few times, but not there.

My2.....Terri O has a link in her sig. (under the posts)

The chickens have been real spoiled lately, DH has been bringing home LOTS of produce for them!

Night All!

good morning,, I normally do not get up this early, but Annie got up and made a potta.. one just cannot sleep while smelling that ..

am having a cuppa ..

The USPS insurance covers only cracked eggs, doesn't it ? IDK if it covers scrambled eggs..
You have to remember, there are a few "mental giants" working in the sorting rooms and they will purposely drop kick a box marked fragile, just for funsies ..

I once received such a a package in the mail.. when I went to pick it up, the mail person told me to come inside and get it,, he refused to touch it.. the package was all but gone and the contents were spilling out ..

another example : when I was in the army we used to send cassettes instead of writing letters.. One of the guys sent a cassette to his Mom,, the mental giants in the post office opened his package and did some recording of their own .. then repackaged it and sent it on it's way.. the family was shocked that their son would send such filth to them,, not knowing what really happened.

just saying ..

Nothing new here . we need some warmer weather.. this is the longest winter I have ever experienced ..

Perhaps a big pot of beef soup will be made on the stove for tonight...I have a new GF bread recipe to try too...I think I will invite my neighbor over. Gee, I just planned my day didnt I?

You guys all stay warm. TerriO

Sunny Afternoon All...welcome raven, hope you can make the bash!

Nice pics bl4...thanks for sharing them.

Collecting a dozen eggs a day now. I have 12 doz in the fridg...prolly have to share them with the amish neighbors. One can always use fresh noodles in return for the eggs , I guess.
I still have a couple pullets laying in their ho-made nests in the deep straw. I think they will join the rest using the nest boxes, in the coming weeks.

Spent yesterday at Camp fixing the snowblower. I hope we are about done, needing that piece of equipment. It was needed way more than I care for, that's the truth.

Good job with the hatches...if I set eggs this spring, it won't be til april 1st...moving them out after a couple months of creating dust, is plenty long enough here.

Stay warm...bigz

Well we are one week into our incubation for the science fair project. From lots of great friends we accumulated 20 eggs, although everyone's consensus was they are not sure on fertility with the freezing temps. Let's hope we get a couple. My temps and humidity are the steadiest they have ever been. Don't know if the house is humid or what but I have added no water and it is sitting at 40/ by itself.

I have an egg eater that just got moved to the garage with my tiny bantam leghorn. Hoping she was my only culprit, had been getting about six eggs a day but past few days have had zero and caught her eating one a few days ago. Two empty shells in there today, but found three good eggs still. Hoping this solves the problems. My customers were wondering why we have had no eggs for them lately.

Wrestling season is almost done and the other kiddo starts swim lessons soon. Otherwise not much new. Need to get shopping for seeds next!!! And waiting for some chickies to be hatched in two more weeks!
