Sorry about your fire, glad the house didn't catch.

Well if my day couldn't get any better. The pole-shed roof just caved in about 45 minutes ago. I sure hope it's covered by my insurance for this reason. I know I had it on the policy but not sure because of the snow. Tomorrow will make sure all the other buildings including the barn are cleared off. What a winter I tell ya. I got the skid steer unstuck, but never got the bucket to pivot back so pretty useless machine right now. Ended up having to take down an oak in the horse pasture to get enough wood to make it partly thru the week.

So everyone go out and get your roofs cleared off, they could go in a second.

Sclark, our small barn roof collapsed in 2002.. we were in Florida when it happened.. found out about it when we came home ..
our insurance covered it, so I ripped off the whole second story and rebuilt it from there on up.. this time I increased the pitch and put metal roofing on.. It is 16 feet up to the roof edge, so it is not getting raked off,, not by me .. it is going to be quite an avalanche when it gets warm and the snow lets go..

our dusting of snow is over 2 inches deep.. I am so glad I plowed yesterday,, now I can do it again.
and then again next week , from the sound of it .. then when it gets warm enough to melt, the hard pack will turn to slush ..more scraping ..

Cindlady - Thanks! We heard about the healing properties of honey at a bee keepers class we attended the beginning of February. Thanks for the suggestion.

- roof - isn't that the way it happens? You go away and something happens? 2 years ago we went to Florida and we lost 12 hens to a owl, our helper insisted it was coming from the ground, we thought the air and couldn't convince them to lock them up until we got home. Oh well.
- snow? When it gets warm it will melt and freeze overnight, we'll have ice all over the place.. Yuck!
- Siding - the heat warped it and cracked it in places, so there will be replacement and probably repainting. expensive, yes, but well worth it.

Chickenscratch - I hope your finger heals quickly... hate when that happens, cause it's always hart to keep it from getting infected.
- G.Pa and his TV watching - when my DoD moved in with us, he watched reruns of Mash, over and over and over. We are not TV watches, so it drove us crazy. I like a quiet house! That's why I like the country!

View from the house. Too cold to go out and look at the back. Son looked last night and said the back wall is pulled in. That was alot of snow there as when I built that the trusses are 2x14 and it snapped them like a twig. It was originally built for a wood shed and later added the front wall as to why it's shabby looking. I'm not touching it until insurance is called and in they will even cover it assesses the damage. I have ALOT of stuff in there that would get broken from this happening. We had been shoveling off the addition and garage roof but never thought of that roof going. I'm pretty sure the building was insured for 3 or 5k but that was for the whole shibang contents and all. I've never actually filed an insurance claim in my life, house or car so this is a new one for me.

My husband files insurance claims for a living (sort of) lol. He said to call your insurance company and if you have American Family it's probably not covered. If you need any help, let me know. When my chicken coop burned down a few years ago I handled the claim. If he would have done it, I would have gotten about 4 times what I did. Nobody came out to look at it, we just handled it over the phone.

Hi all! 300 posts behind so hoping I didn't miss anything.

Sorry to hear about the hot tub fire :-( and roof collapse. I so wish winter was OVER. I have the day off tomorrow and originally it was supposed to be warm (close to 40) and sunny. Now I hear we will be under a Winter Storm Watch and getting 4-7 more inches of snow...come on!

I lost Diesel my sweetheart of a Roo 2 days ago (not Peekachu that was really sick and recovered). He was fluffed up and droopy looking one night, brought him in the house and within 24 hrs was weak and not standing. His breathing was normal and he seemed a little under weight. I tried medicating him but he was too weak. Just before he died he had this clear really thick snot drooling out of his mouth. Not sure what this is-I am thinking we still have a hard strand of Cocci hanging around? The tests I sent in a month ago showed no signs of worms and slight Cocci which wasn't anything to be worried about per Vet. I am treating the flock again with Corid but honestly everyone else looks normal and eggs are up to 6-8 per day this past week, I did notice what appeared to be mites after he died, but no one in the coop has any signs. I think I will also treat with Eprinex here to make sure there aren't any issues. I hate over treating however, it is also so difficult with everyone cooped up with the cold weather.

I feel so discouraged with the loss of chickens this past 6 months (5 in all) that I am not even sure I want to add to my flock this year. Not sure how long I should wait to make sure that everyone is in perfect health?

did you have 2x14 trusses ? or 2x14 common rafters ? or was that supposed to be 2x4 ?
2x14 is not a very common board ..

when I rebuilt my roof, I did not use the common trusses.. I ordered special heavy trusses..
I am hoping this snow load proves I spent the extra money wisely

those dammed roofs are like dominoes.. when one rafter breaks, the rest follow willingly ..
