Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

They were 2x14 home made rafters. I used them because the pitch was so low to bare the extra weight. I guess they weren't strong enough. I still haven't gone out to access it all but son said the snapped in the middle. If I do get I insurance for it I'm definitely not building the same type of roof. And like you Jim will have a steaper peak. My barn roof is same style just steamer but my attached tack shed I'm quite worried about now as its about same pitch as the pole shed was. I found some insurance papers that said $5000 for the implement shed and $5000 contents on shed barn and tack shed. Is thatit per claim orgoes one time? Im annot idiot when it comes to this as I said earlier I have never filed a claim in my life. I also have a mortgage that says on my insurance papers that any claim goes to that which will really suck because those buildings weren't part of the mortgage. Also worried about my premiums going up, im already paying nearly $1000 a year and if my whole entire place were to wipe out only 72,500 for buildings and contents.

Hi all! 300 posts behind so hoping I didn't miss anything.

Sorry to hear about the hot tub fire :-( and roof collapse. I so wish winter was OVER. I have the day off tomorrow and originally it was supposed to be warm (close to 40) and sunny. Now I hear we will be under a Winter Storm Watch and getting 4-7 more inches of snow...come on!

BBP Happy to hear you've found a good home for Ruger.

I lost Diesel my sweetheart of a Roo 2 days ago (not Peekachu that was really sick and recovered). He was fluffed up and droopy looking one night, brought him in the house and within 24 hrs was weak and not standing. His breathing was normal and he seemed a little under weight. I tried medicating him but he was too weak. Just before he died he had this clear really thick snot drooling out of his mouth. Not sure what this is-I am thinking we still have a hard strand of Cocci hanging around? The tests I sent in a month ago showed no signs of worms and slight Cocci which wasn't anything to be worried about per Vet. I am treating the flock again with Corid but honestly everyone else looks normal and eggs are up to 6-8 per day this past week, I did notice what appeared to be mites after he died, but no one in the coop has any signs. I think I will also treat with Eprinex here to make sure there aren't any issues. I hate over treating however, it is also so difficult with everyone cooped up with the cold weather.

I feel so discouraged with the loss of chickens this past 6 months (5 in all) that I am not even sure I want to add to my flock this year. Not sure how long I should wait to make sure that everyone is in perfect health?
If I were you, I'd definitely NOT add to my flock. It sounds like you need to strip all bedding out and do a thorough cleaning with a pesticide against mites and maybe something that could kill the other stuff (cocci, etc). It might also be beneficial to examine air flow and whether or not to do deep litter. If you have the option once it gets warmer to move the critters to another area and do a deep cleaning in their current location, treat the existing critters while they are in a new location and wait until they have no cocci, mites, etc to move them back in. If you are like most of us, you might not have the luxury to move them to a new location and will have to do the cleaning and healing in place. Good luck and this is only my advice!

Thanks chickenscratch. That is definitely y plan as soon as it warms up. Its so frustrating as I went over 2 years with no issues and now I can't seem to figure out what the deal is. I did a full parasite fecal flotation, I did a proactive worming last summer, have treated for respiratory (thats doesn't seem to be an issue), treated for Cocci, examine the birds daily, give them sprouts several times per week, vitamins, they are laying pretty well for this time of year and eggs show no signs of distress, none of the flock show any signs of mites/lice (check them at night with a light), have a dust bath with ash/dirt in their coop, their combs/wattles are starting to red up for spring, just not sure what the deal is. I do use the deep litter method and have done this for years without issue; only change to that was not using diamaticious earth this time as I discovered that stops the organic break down. I guess all I can do is continue monitoring. Of the 5 I have lost in the past 6 months, I do know that one was for sure from Cocci, one is believed to be a heart attach (after discussing with vet and the symptoms), and one was a crippled chicken I had that survived over 2 years. So since one died from Cocci, and a hen died a few weeks after-I am assuming that was also from Cocci. This deal with my Roo-I have no idea!!!! The only thing that makes sense would be Cocci. Has anyone else noticed a thick clear mucous drool with a chicken that had Cocci/died from it?

Sunny Morning After the Snow.....come on folks....those Clint movies are the best....I watched both yesterday...fistfull of dollars and the good, the bad and the ugly....simply the best.

Glad you were able to get the skidder out sclark....sorry to hear about the roof. I would shop around after your claim for a different provider...that sounds way out of line.....run your auto with your house at the same company for a steeper discount. Your paying over twice what you should be paying.

Still collecting a doz eggs a day...brought a buckeye hen in for a dose of tylan50...she had a raspy sound this morning....she is a 5 year old hen and seems fine otherwise.

Sorry about the losses angiebubs. Sometimes it just happens with older birds past a certain age. In the Spring you will be ready for some new additions....start thinking about warming up the bator!

Congrats on the hatches....it is more fun than Christmas.....

My seeds are here from sandhill preservation....they sent some free yellow/gold tomato seeds called sunray....late, ind, 10oz to 12oz yellow-orange globe fruits OG....I start with plants from the amish and have no need for the seeds....pm your addy and I'll send them out...first come gets them....

later...bigz

BUMMER!! Hang in there, Ang!!

Thanks BigZio and Irish!! Its hard as the can't talk and tell you whats wrong....and there is responsibility that goes with chicken keeping (or any animals for that matter)...I keeps second guessing what else I should have or can do to prevent anything else from happening. I guess at this point its just continuing to keep a close eye on the flock, and hope for the best.

otherwise my news is I am joining weight watchers here at work. We will see how it goes. Want to lose some weight, but I love food and am an emotional eater. I know that. I love cooking too...goes hand in hand doesnt it. So if you have a good healthy meat friendly (not giving up meat) receipe, please share. like I said, we will see how it goes. Work is paying for us to do WW... lets just hope I can stick with it for the 3 months.
have a great Thursday
I have been doing Weight Watchers for a year - off and on, sorta. I lost 35 pounds last summer - gained back 15. DH lost 70+ pounds last summer also. He has gained back about 20. Had a very stressful fall - a lot of travel back to WI, staying in hotels and eating out. The decision for him to transfer back to WI was pretty easy for him, but pretty hard on me and I am also an emotional eater. But we are back on track and losing again.
I highly recommend using the Weight Watchers online. Meetings are very important, but the online is a great resource to have on your side. I have reworked most of our family recipes to make them WW friendly/friendlier using the recipe builder. Meringue Cookies are the best treat while on WW. They have a great recipe for vanilla and chocolate flavored. :)
Good Luck on your new lifestyle.
