Hello Fellow Wisconsinites!
I have a question: My chicks are 5 weeks old and quite large, they appear to be fully feathered can I put them in the barn with a heat lamp? I haven't been giving any supplemental heat for a week now but they are in the house. I have a coop but wanted to wait until the are 8 weeks old to introduce them to the ladies. They all healthy and lively, one is sitting in front of my keyboard eagerly awaiting a response lol. Thank you for any information. It is above freezing in the morning and we are no longer using our heated water bowls and it is getting up in the 50's but not everyday.
I have EE, Astrolorps, Red Stars, Black Stars, and a mystery chick.
At 5 week they can get to be some work in the house with the dust and litter. If you do put them outside, I would put a lamp on them (w/o a lamp in the house they are still at 70 degrees I am sure.). Allow them enough room to move as close, or as far away from the light as they want. Just like when they were 5 days old they will let you know the temp. they like. Just be sure there is no drafts, and keep a close eye on them the first couple hours - first day. When in doubt about chicks/heat I use some wisdom that my Grandfather told me....You can lower the temp. 5 degrees per week. I am no expert, but I hope this helps.
