Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hello Fellow Wisconsinites!
I have a question: My chicks are 5 weeks old and quite large, they appear to be fully feathered can I put them in the barn with a heat lamp? I haven't been giving any supplemental heat for a week now but they are in the house. I have a coop but wanted to wait until the are 8 weeks old to introduce them to the ladies. They all healthy and lively, one is sitting in front of my keyboard eagerly awaiting a response lol. Thank you for any information. It is above freezing in the morning and we are no longer using our heated water bowls and it is getting up in the 50's but not everyday.
I have EE, Astrolorps, Red Stars, Black Stars, and a mystery chick.

At 5 week they can get to be some work in the house with the dust and litter. If you do put them outside, I would put a lamp on them (w/o a lamp in the house they are still at 70 degrees I am sure.). Allow them enough room to move as close, or as far away from the light as they want. Just like when they were 5 days old they will let you know the temp. they like. Just be sure there is no drafts, and keep a close eye on them the first couple hours - first day. When in doubt about chicks/heat I use some wisdom that my Grandfather told me....You can lower the temp. 5 degrees per week. I am no expert, but I hope this helps.

After some rain to enlarge our muddy property all is still in snow, slush and mud. Even after keeping watch these past couple of nights for the bad kitty, she didn't come back. So far. We still go out there every other hour and the trap is stocked with chicken breast. We shall see who wins after we had those 4 last year!

Our eggs are growing in the bator. So far 7 BLH, all 6 Saxony and 2 Anconas are growing. Should get more eggs this week to hatch. Lol. Gonna try to smuggle a sebbie egg in there too, since SO don't want geese at all but I think sebbies are so beautiful and I want one! Lol.
Then waiting for our 10 Holderread ducklings to come too. Til then we're busy making up a pen plan to separate the breeds and starting to build as soon as the snow and mud allows! Yup, busy busy.

Congrats Jim on having sold a puppy and Bo. And yes, you always miss them, but you still got more, right?!

Gonna turn in for the night. Was a long day with the whiny puppy (his son's. Ours barely even bark unless there is a stranger coming) and my nerves are fried. Tomorrow another long day taking care of my disabled friend all day long. Hope it goes by fast so I can relax a bit too! So night all, til we read each other again...
where did you get the Seb egg ?
the man I sold my Sebs to is looking for a Seb Gander..

He lives near Bruce , Wisc, so not that far from you ..

I have no qualms about letting the puppies go, but Bo is a special dog.. I really he works out for the new family.. Oh well, if nothing else he will make a wonderful pet ..

Thanks for the feedback. Tomorrows the big day for my chicks.

Good luck and let us know how it goes! I'm keeping mine in the laundry room for a few weeks yet. Half of my backyard is like a sponge. Our current coop has started sinking in the muck, so now we need to come up with a new idea. Plus, we have a hawk that tried to take one of the hens away last week.

good afternoon,, I am whittling the flock down little by little.. I just sold a trio of barred rocks.. and then I discovered I still have one more hen ..

I sold the 3 Sebastopol geese last night..

I am down to the 2 cross breed Africans.. she is laying eggs now..

about 15 guineas

about 10 Delawares and

about 10 Buff Orpingtons..

Oh yeah,, and Old Tommy the Royal Palm turkey ..

3 puppies and their parents

and Annies 20 or so cockatiels and parakeets ..

I have to give a guy a call that I sold Buffs to last year.. I am hoping he is getting fertile eggs...

I keep getting calls from some guy claiming that I have computer problems and he is here to help me cure them.. beware .. I think I am rid of him, at least for the time being..

2 more people just posted on Facebook that they got sick chickens from the lady in Woodville. One person said they got seemingly healthy chickens from her last year, but when she put them in with her flock all of her chickens got sick! What can a person do about this? She's spreading her infested birds all over and she sells them for like $8 a chick! I'm going to get the number of the lady from the state who this was originally reported to and have everyone call her.

Those phone guys are getting trickier too... they called and talked to my DH and he said they knew things about his computer that they shouldn't know, like what version of SW he was running and the like. He even switched to a different computer and they told him they could see he had a second computer. He uses a link through his phone, it's got to be something that way. I was on an airplane once and the stewardess came on at the start and asked everyone to turn off their phones, and a few minutes later said there were 2 phones still on and gave the last 4 digits of each. Now how did they do that??

And talk about odd calls, we get calls each weekend from someplace in India (usually from some guy named Bob or George, that can barely pronounce the word Bob and George) to see if my DH wants to renew some type of medication over the phone. It's been going on for over 10 years. We've even tried telling them he passed away (which he didn't) to get them to stop calling, the calls only stopped for around 3 weeks. Last time, my husband asked the guy where he was (India), how we can get off the list (he had no idea, his phone just rings a number) and how it worked ( They work through doctors in Florida to ask you a few questions and then you get a prescription - this is like major addicting drugs). Now doesn't that sound like what a few baseball players did??

Wow, Jim, sounds like you are spring cleaning... out with the old, in with the new!

we go through this every once in awhile..
I could sell you chickens from my healthy flock and suddenly your chickens could start to get sick, or the chickens I sold to you could get sick,

all flocks are carriers of something or other.. they are immune to it, but other flocks are not, it can go either way ..

I am not saying their chickens are not sick.. but maybe they are not..

this is the reason you quarantine new chickens ..

A lesson I learned all too well last year. Quarantine is the most important thing you can do, after doing so no ore problems.
