Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

After the rain last night, the coop was wet again, as I moved pine shavings out of the way, realizing that there is a ton of water sitting in a trough like area under the roosts. So far I have taken like 10 pails out.

Also discovered that the "gray water" pump for the house went out, backed up into the septic tank, which backed up into the downstairs storage. furnace room. Nastiness!!!!THe whole house stinks, and a majority of my stuff stored down there is ruined. Hoping my boxes of pictures aren't in it. And I guess with all the rain, all the repair guys are swamped-hoping to get someone out here this evening!

Happy father's day to all.

DH just spilled his Mt Dew all over me and in my purse. Just thought you all wanted to know. We dropped all of the kids off today and are heading home now. I'm taking DH and my dad out for dinber, but I'm gonna need to take a shower first.
Theo got my lav orp again.

Here is the creamy colored English orp. His name is Elsa, the little fella is so sweet!

Did she say what the "project" was? If I had room I would take him or the gold laced.

good later afternoon,

I went out after the sun came back out and put my irrigation system together,, tried it out and I can reach every corner of the garden..

A HUGE hawk landed in the tallest tree across the field from the house.. he was visiting yesterday, too.. there is no way I can collect the guineas to count them,, but I will bet that hawk is not returning because he just enjoys watching me spray the garden..

the guineas in the garden saw him and headed into the yard .. sounding the alarm.

Gus is roaming around the field and yard, so I am not worried too much ..

this morning I saw a pair of guineas beside the road past the neighbors close to the river.. If thy didn't find their way home, there is not much hope they will survive very long ..

Sandi, answer to the buckwheat question. (I use it often here for soil building) It is a very tender crop and must be planted when all frosts are past,,,it does grow fast though, I usually turn it under at 21 days or so, should be about ready to flower then and you get maximum OM at this stage.

It can become a weed if left to flower and seed (a catch 22 for honey production),,,,there have been summers when I have planted and turned in 3 crops then plant the area in winter rye.

Buckwheat also works as a "shade crop" it grows so fast weeds don't have a chance to germinate,,,,check Cashton Farm Supply,,,excellent folks to work with, good prices, many great products.

and yes Jim it does make a dark honey with a different taste,,,but still a good taste,,,hey it's honey!

If you want a fall planting for next years meaties, and you have not done a soil test, winter rye grain, alsike clover, and winter peas.
Good protein % for raising meaties. Buckwheat I use as a stand alone summer crop followed by fall winter rye grain/clover/winter peas.
For sandy soils also consider adding some chicory to the fall planting. All my plant selection is done based on zero watering....other than mother nature.

But soil test should be top of the list.

YES,,,never "save the money" and skip the soil test,,,,good point!

The *Project* is a Gold Laced also.
I have two Gold laced that are blue based and throw ,blue, black and splash. That is a splash variety. I just hatched out a few here too. I do not use them in a breeding program, but they taste delicious.

Ahhh! No wonder he is so darn pretty! Thank you, D! I tell you, we have the nicest cockerels from Delisha! Like, above and beyond sweet. Elsa, the splash mentioned, is so sweet @jbher, that's Jen, can't even rename him. He's our sensitive guy. I SO want to find a home for them all!
