Yep a mask will help but make sure you get a proper fit. If it does't fit (loose on bottom) flys will get under it and that is living h3ll. Plus you really should take it off at night. And especially if it rains or gets wet. I used to use masks. But with so many it's nearly impossible to keep them on. They pull them off each other for fun.
Another thing you can do is spray the fly spray on your hands and wipe it on his forehead, jaws and around his eyes (not to close)
Here is the recipe that worked very well. I made some for my sisters horse and she told me today that the flies didn't land on her horse. I love it so far. Plus you can add a few drops of essential oil if you want.

Recipe #5

1 cup White Vinegar
1 cup BabyOil (Dollar General has a baby oil with Aloe Vera and VitaminE)
1/4 cup Original Pinesol
1 tbs Original Dawn Dish Soap
1 tbs Original Avon Skin So Soft
1 cup Water

Avon currently has the Skin So Soft for $6.99 reg. $13

Oh and make the kids pick up the pony poop.... LOL

Anyways, the other question I had was about the green goop I keep reading about. What is it and what do you use it for? Recipe maybe? Yes, I'm a recipe collector... and tryer-outter...lol

Had to get my one yr old Pekin inside since she was limping a bit since yesterday. Noticed what I think is bumblefoot on her right foot. It seems to be in the early stages so I'm wondering if I should still remove it? Anyone has a good video on how to do it? Gotta show SO since I can look at all the gore but I can't do this to my babies. It still hurts me just watching it... so he's the one who has to do it.

The brat just called bout an hour ago that he was in Marshfield. He should be here around midnight then... yea...*yawn* Now it just hoping that he won't have that many days to spend here (I know I'm mean and heartless!) and he'll get OTR with his truck again...

Wow Jim, and I thought I gotta lot of birdies right now! But I guess since you have already this much experience and an age advantage, you probably have waaaay more birds than most of us

Here is another mosquito spray recipe that was in the Star Journal.... it doesn't have any oil in it. I liked it for myself as well. I used it after I had had enough of the oil spray on my skin! lol

Recipe #10

10-15 drops Lavender Essential Oil
3-4 tsp Vanilla Extract
1/4 cup lemon juice (from bottle, refrigerate open bottle after it is opened)
Put in a 16 oz Spray Bottle and fill with Water

Hello fellow cheeseheads!
Thought I'd introduce myself. Names A.Pow. I have 2 sons, 13 & 3, 1 dog, 24chickens~ 4 BuffOrps, 2 White leghorns,2 Isa Brown's, 2 black sexlinks, 2 Rhode Island Reds,2 silver seabrights, 2 golden seabrights, 2 porcelian d'uccles, 2 white silkies, and 2 Easter eggers.
I live in Jefferson county near Koshkonong Lake. I am looking to add more Easter eggers to my flock. Prefer past the downy chick stage, pullets. If you know anyone selling some, please send me a message. Thank you.
Look forward to reading more from you all. Been lurking for awhile.

for you and the baby.

Jim... Unsettling seeing that chicken wing I bet!

Wildsam.... The Green Goop is a herbal salve I make. It's a healing salve with great antiseptic,anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It heals a great deal of skin problems, wounds, rashes, etc.. I could make the list of what's in it later. I was selling it at the bash for $4 a 2 oz. jar which was about at cost. I make it mostly for family and friends so I only do it about one a year. A couple of tattoo shops would like to carry it but it takes quite a while to make and too much standing for me.

I will still sell some to whoever wants some. I have about 9 left to sell. I think it will cost about $2.75 to ship. If someone is coming to Burlington (or the area) I could hook you up.

Pepper still has 3 chicks left. Jasmine seems to have a little trouble covering all 10 of those Marans eggs. Remember, she's small for a BR.

Night All!

good morning,

we had a real downpour at just about dusk.. Good thing I stretched the hoses to the gardens.. Now it should rain every day ..

I am waiting for my welder guy to come.. then I can finally clean the coops..
I do not think it is normal for someone to want to shovel sh!t, is it ??
must be part of chicken fever ..

I can see 5 keets in bator #2 and there are still at least 5 in the hatcher.. the ones in the hatcher are heading out to the brooder in the chicken coop.. I still haven't determined what eggs hatched in the bator #2 ..

3 of the ones in the hatcher were left there because they had splayed legs.. If they have not corrected themselves, they will be culled..

Somebody made coffee this morning.. GS or his GF ,, really tastes good..

I heard them leave for work at 7, so that is when I got up..

cuppa is about done, so I better get on with the day ..

Hello fellow Wisconsinites!!! I am quite happy I found this thread when I did!! My name is Jenna and I am in Fond du Lac county. At the moment I only have 3 chickens: Leroy, Nugget, and Jack (which is short for something else because he is quite mean XD). I don't know what breeds they are as I got them from school. I would love to get more chickens, but I really need to get one of mine healthy again. Over the coarse of 4 years, my family has raised 120 chickens. But this is the first time we've had them as pets. I am looking forward to keeping up with all the other cheeseheads!!!
