Terri, how is vaca?
Angiebubs, is it just a little squabbling to keep other hens away from the chicks? My broodies do thet all the time. This way when they leave the chicks, they (the chicks) are still given a wide girth by the rest of the flock. Is it possible that's what is happening? No blood or chases lasting longer than a few seconds?
Jim, the side walk done yet? Then you can run to town for a cuppa and new memory card

Its more feathers flying, feet coming up LOL as bad as roosters fighting. I stayed back a couple times and it didnt stop. (Funny thing is-when my roosters did this, it made me nervous, with my hens who are every bit as violent when fighting-I have no qualms about reaching in and breaking them up) I am planning on trying again tonight if its not raining. Let the flock out to free range and let one of the moms and chicks out. ( I have been letting one set out at a time for a 15 mins break each evening but the moms are beginning to look frantic to get out and about-especially the mom with 5 chicks-Blue LF Cochin)

Ang, try throwing down some cracked corn or scratch feed, then let the clucks loose.. the chickens will be so busy eating their treat they won't even notice the newbies..

Older chickens don't normally go after chicks.. what happens is a fight breaks out and the chicks get in the way and sometimes killed.. from what it sounds like so far, your chicks are not near the fighting.. let the hens go at it, once and for all.. If it bothers you, don't stand there and watch..

I just got the last of the concrete troweled and brushed and then the thundering began .. we tossed a heavy tarp over the walk and let it be..

I have a port in my computer where I can plug the memory card.. then I did delete about 50 pictures this morning..
tomorrow when I uncover the walk I will take a picture..

my hired helper said, how does $20.oo sound,, I said, that sounds cheap.. He did most of the heavy work.. I am more of the technical adviser sort..
we came out right on the head with the concrete.. I have 3 bags left over as I had planned, those will be used when I make the new raised sill when I cut the bottom of the chicken coop door off..

Kalib's GF left him again,, this happens a couple of times a month.. One of these times she will not be coming back,, I don't think he gets it.. Today she told him he has to mature a little bit,, funny thing is; I agree with her..

Jim... Is there already concrete where you plan on putting the door sill? There is a slab that goes into my coop and the rain and mad just run right into the coop, I was thinking of putting in a sill but didn't want to break up the slab. Can I just put it over the slab? It doesn't have to last 100 years, the coop won't.

Harvest Day here...cut my first 20 small zukes, and 3 huge heads of broccoli....so tonight it's broccoli salad with bacon and cheese, and zukes with tomatoes and onions....living off the gardens started officially today.

Good luck with the transition angibubs...they can be a challenge sometimes...maybe allow the pecking order to settle in place...then and only then will peace be had by all.

Rain again today...to wet to weed...I don't work in the mud.

Hello everyone! I live in oak creek and am new to this website. We have 3 kc ducks that are almost 4 weeks old!

Welcome flowerducks! At least I'm not gonna be the only crazy duck lady around here!

I'm kinda celebrating right now. Germany is in the soccer championship FINALS! They literally WHOOPED the behinds of the brazilians with a 7:1!!!!!! Now the Dutch or Argentina will probably cancel the finals, lol! Someone again say that the US is better than us?!? (At least when it comes to soccer. Proud look)

It's pouring on and off today. Won't even risk to go for a walk as I'd probably get soaked before making it back. Not in for a cold shower resulting in wet sticky clothes! Yes, it's a really ducky weather as they are in heaven with all the puddles and rain around them! My little mud pies...

Hmmm concrete pouring. The slabs would probably sink and disappear into our ground. Not worth the money although it would be so much easier! Just gotta get my rubber duckies (boots) on and do it that way...

CL, my one Rouen is broody now for the past 3 months! Hopefully this time something hatches for her. Hate seeing her after I empty out an infertile nest (due to cold etc). Any advise on giving her some goodies without my disabled Pekin gobbling everything up right in front of her?

Wanted to ask something else, but my colander, ehm, brain is fried again.... Gotta close some holes I guess...

New to this thread! Im in northern WI. I have a mixed flock of layers( my old gals)-Welsummers, RIR, Gold laced Wyandotte, Blue Andalusians, (new this year) speckled Sussex, Russian Orloffs, and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. We also raise heritage turkeys(hatched our 1st 13 poults this year) and 1 duck!

good afternoon, evening,

Cind, my chicken coop has a concrete floor,, and two rows of concrete block foundation with the wooden walls set on the blocks..

I am going to cut the door jamb off at the top of the new raised sill,, I will pour the sill right onto the concrete floor.. I am going to make it as thick as the 8 inch concrete blocks. I will have the sill just a couple inches higher than the new sidewalk..

I am thinking of embedding a 2 x 4 into the top of the concrete sill.. then I can attach some sort of weatherstripping to the wood instead of trying to attach it to concrete..
the inside step down will be about 5 inches..
which is OK with me, because the door will be swinging that high over the floor and not dragging through the straw and muck ..

I will take pictures..

I also had water running into the coop whenever it rained real hard, or each spring when the snow melted..

Annie found another guinea nest full of eggs.. she left 2 in it and brought me the rest,, as of one hour ago, there are 32 new guinea eggs in the bator,,

Jim, Bigzio, Cuties: Tonight I let then out, feed them their FF and 2 of the hens had minor squabbles but things settled down quickly. The 2 hens that co parent seem to be the ones most defensive.

Tomorrow when I home I think I will leave those two with their chicks out and see how things go-aybe leave them out. Thanks for the advice!!
