Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

sprouts are better than the whole grain..but remember fermenting the grains makes them more bio available anyway. I used to sprout before I fermented.

Cuties..over fermenting would not kill a chick..but not keeping the grains covered in water would. The .grains must be kept under 1 inch of water or you will end up with something other than fermented feed.

Delish I have been following the Fermented Feed forum on here and many people say that its not required to keep the FF covered in water? Most of them feed it the consistency of oatmeal. Have you read anything that shows that this can cause problems? Or is this just with grains? It sure makes it easier to feed to them but want to make sure there are no ill effects from doing it this way. I do go through my 5 gals about every 5 days though so probably not long enough for anything serious to grow?

Cuties I am right there with you!! I have 10 cockerels and am frantic trying to figure out what to do with the ones I cant re home by winter. There is no way in he%% I would feed them back to the rest of the flock!

I know it is totally crazy. But they are my pets! It would feel like butchering one of our cats. I am very happy I live in a time when I do not need to self sustain. I love meat. I just can not meet it and eat it. Much less butcher.

I am right there with you> Logically, it makes a LOT more sense to raise chickens for meat. They would get to live a perfect life for 5 months, no hormones, humane life, etc and it owuld be so much better for us....but I just am not to the point I can do it, and not sure I ever will be. Chickenship wants to raise some separately out back where I would never see them-however I would be doing the "presidential pardon" on a regular basis and sneaking them into my flock I just know it!! And now with TEN boys I have no idea what I am going to do. I have someone that I might be able to convince to take 1 or 2. I am most likely going to have to set up a bachelor pad of some sort. Mine are also pets first and egg providers second.

Whe chickenship deer hunts, I want to part of it, I dont want to see it, hear about it etc. In fact he has to back my car out of the garage when he has one hanging in there so I dont see any of it. And I cant eat venison for months after deer hunting either. I hate it but think I could become a vegetarian if I thought about it to much, so I try not to.

I'll bet you don't raise a garden either,, how could you ever nurture those carrots to maturity and then just pull them out of the ground by their hair and eat them ??

LOL I knew you would pipe up on this subject Jim. Different strokes for different folks is what makes the world so much fun. And for the record, we have a 70 ft by 70 garden :-) I just spent the last 30 mins trimming bags of fresh green beans getting ready to pickle and can ;-)

Hi All!

Boy I lead a boring life! LOL Nothing new again. Well, I did catch a guinea that got string wrapped around it's feet. No matter how careful I am throwing them away.... someone seems to find find one!

For FF I use a 2gallon bucket and just keep it going. I use feed mill pellets and now and then add some milled oats or grains. I think I had this batch going for almost 2 years now.

Night All!

Have a great weekend folks. Going to IN. to visit son.
Cuties I know were the extra roos will end up at.

I have 50 broiler chciks coming on the 19th. I'm not sure why. None of my friends can do the deed either.
I could fill my freezer and/or can and fill the shelves with unwanted roos.

But I do understand pet v.s. meal.

Angiebubs, we are so alike. I even take it to the next level. Hubby's carcasses are not even allowed here! I admit, I put an ad out. And sell the extra roos. Sometimes I luck out. And they go for pets. Other times, I know what happens to them. I try to do the out of sight out of mind thing.
kildare, when I sell the chicks, I know most of the males will be eaten. I always try to not think about it lol
I gotta ewnup in town. And was never really around the farm type setting. Our meat comes from stores. And I had a lot of pets. That is just how I veiw animals.
Angisbubs, if ypu start a batcheral pad, I dont think those roos willnbe happy. They will have a couple of dominant ones in there. And the submissive ones will just be picked on. Give it a try. But in that situation, I do think it is better to let others take the roos you will not be using...

Cuties: The bachelor pad idea is if I cant' "re home" the boys. Plus I want to keep one of two for breeding and to see the quality, I need to let them get closer to 6-8 months old. My plan is, to see if I can re home some of the ones that I know are not SQ first, and as I find homes whittle it down a little bit more.

Deer carcasses: He processes all of his own meat-has a couple smokers, grinders, stuffing machines etc. SO he hangs them in the garage, out of site.I refuse to go out there till its gone :-( And his whole geese hunting? That is an entirely different story UGH!
