Gus picked now to shed his winter coat ,, he sure is looking thin ..
he doesn't like it when I pull the clumps of fur off of him.. it must sting just a little, or else he just doesn't like to be "picked" on .. especially sensitive around his rump and upper hind legs.. and that is where the most is left.. there are clumps of white all over the property .. neat to watch when I hit them with the lawn mower .. POOF !!!

I hear ya. I will try to have Sheri Take some pics. and post for me. They are doing great. At 7 weeks I still have no clue on the brahmas ( far & away favs. of Wife & Daughter ). Mine are the OE's ( smartest ). Believe 4 pullets & 1 cockerel ( barred pattern ) on the OE's, 3 & 1 (was 4 & 1) for BCM's , and unknown on the brahmas.

Wasp/hornet nests we have found are best eliminated with brake cleaner. Specifically one that is chlorinated. Wait until nightfall, have a dim light to locate the opening, stuff something in the hole and then shove the straw in and spray. This stuff is almost instantaneous in killing the bees, but just to make sure you get all the way into the nursery area you need to spray a bit. Leave the hole plugged just to be safe. If there continues to be activity at the nest site after a couple of days, repeat treatment.


Those bald faced hornets never had a chance once the sun went down.

Hi All!

Yep, I thing the birds running around the yard have kept all the nasty bugs down. The only bad thing about that is they are probably keeping good ones down too.

I looked for turkey trials into the weeds but no luck so far, at least I know she's alive!

Still thinking about the Portage show... don't think my 3 month old cockerel would do the best against 10 month old almost full grown roosters in the cockerel category. Maybe next year.

Might get some broilers in the spring... Cornish Crosses of course. But someone else on a different thread is starting a black meat bird from the Ayam Cermani, so that might be interesting...

Do you guys think I should hatch in the spring? My pullets and cockerel are only 3 months right now, and I'd probably start late March, early April, or as soon as the snow is pretty much gone. They wouldn't be that experienced, only about 10-11 months at that time. Should I wait until they are older or get a broody? And which part of the spring is best to let the hen hatch the chicks?

Three months old is too young to compete in the show. As for spring hatching, I don't understand why you wouldn't use them. I usually start incubating my call duck eggs mid-Feb and chickens mid-March.

We try to get chicks to hatch by Jan 1st or 2nd so they have enough time to grow so they can compete well in shows. For us we add roosters into our pens in Nov and start increasing light as well so we get eggs mid Dec.
