Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Some people I've worked with in the past would also take short trips after they got the horse on the trailer. They would start by going around the block and eventually they would go to a nearby quarry to walk around and come home. One lady would even sit for a good 1/2 hour or more and let her horse eat hay. She had run into a problem when she first started. She would put him in and then take him out, he was a smarty and got it in his mind that once he went in he could fly out and then expect a reward. Good luck.

Thank you guys for all the great tips! I do think he will be a little less afraid when we calmly work with him. He took over an hour to load at their house. But the dad was wrapping the lead around his hand and trying to force it. And Brownie has taught me that that is definitely not the trick for horses. I wanted to ask him if he thought he was going to drag a full size horse into the trailer! But then Thunder followed their pet cow right in. Only took a matter of seconds after that!
All advice will be applied :)
Jim, doesn't Calab have a gf you were talking about? Maybe that is part of the drive to drive.
Miss, when I get the trailer you could always stop out for some training lessons ;) I am quite positive you would like to meet him either way!
The neighbor that Scott knows from past has trai ed for many years. And has offered to also help us along.

hello all,

jim the idea of your lumber pile and dora with pups under it has me going now, perhaps sneaking out at night to snack and drink?? how big is this pile? any chance of hearing anything in it? guess not much but time will tell, darn patience anyhow....

sunny here today, storms again tomorrow. my garden has been going nuts, I have tomatoes like crazy and zucchini also, then we did green peppers and cherry tomatoes and that's about it, just a tiny garden this year as the new coop took over most of my garden area, next year will be better...

weaning my little beltie this week/weekend, gotta get my pen reinforced for her first.... me and kids will be working on it tonight.

cuties good luck with trailer. only thing I found is that once you get them in the trailer take them out and do it again right away. and always to end on a good note. good luck!

I did not think Gus chased Dora away; he is a new dynamic to your farm and this might have caused her to think it would be safer to have the pups someplace else.

Cuties, say the word and I can be there in what, an hour and 15? ;) Another tip: whatever you do, DO NOT EVER wrap a lead rope around your hand, arm, whatever...... if that horse freaks you are going with it and it will NOT be pretty. Everyone has they own style with training (as you well know), so just go with whatever makes you comfortable.

What happened to summer????? With this cruddy weather, I just might be tempted to look for a job in Louisiana!

Hey everyone!

It's been real busy around here.....to sum up the end of the summer

Canada was awesome. DH and I really reconnected! It was a great 5 yr late-honeymoon.

Garden is huge and productive

Alice has been accepted into the group, finally

Theo is doing well in some aspects and is being a trouble maker in others. All in all his "troublesome" behaviors are indicative of things we need to change and are.

Kids are all home and have started, school, soccer, etc.

Home environment is much calmer and I hope it stays that way.

What did I miss? I see that Dora is missing?

good afternoon,

not all bad news from here,,

Today, Annie called the dog breeder we got our little nameless girl from..
She told Annie that she had dogs go hide for almost 3 weeks while having pups..
New hope ..

Gus is not that new here,, this is his second litter with Dora.. she was fine with him last time and he was good with the pups..

Russell did not come through with the chain hoist, so I went to Menard's and bought a pile of 2 byes.. I have a plan drawn up and will start putting it together tomorrow..
Kalib doesn't have to work, so I will recruit his help..

Kalib HAD a gf.. she broke up with him a little over a week ago.. she tried to get back together a couple of hours later, but he didn't buy it.. she is still texting him, but he isn't interested in going through another break up.. but yes, that was his incentive to take up driving.. along with my prodding, because I am not allowed to drive after dark, and I am the main picker upper for him from work.. but it will be dark most of the times after the days shorten up and I won't be able to pick him up.

I sold 3 Delaware pullets today.. $7.oo/each.. repeat customer from last year.. they took Buff Orpingtons last year..
A chicken at their house will never be in the soup ..

after getting rid of those 4 roosters, the feathers are growing back nicely on the hens' backs..

I had to laugh at Ken today..(not in his face) .. He asked Annie if we got another rooster ?? He counted 9 of them instead of 8.. we have only 2 .

.....that's it for now...........jiminwisc..........

Hah Jim, good thi g you are better at counting than Ken.
I went for my first ride alone on Thunder today. It was wonderful! He listened and went where I directed. Only thing is I am a little nervous bareback. And I can tell he is used to going a little faster thean I allowed. He wanted to get up. But I did not allow more than a walk.
Hubby on the other hand let him move just a little faster. I so wish knew how to post video! A car came whipping past the pines. And startled Thunder. He abruptly stopped and turned a little away. And hubs took a digger! His first ever! I got it all on video :D Thunder was such a good boy when hubby fell. And didn't move a step. Scott was good and got right back on :)

I had to laugh about you wanting to ask that man if he was going to drag a thousand pound animal into the trailer.. horses naturally are reactors. if you push they push back, if you pull they pull..

I never fell off of a horse.. I did fall under one once when we were doing the rescue pick up.
our hands slipped and i went sailing under the horse.. another time I had one rear up and tip over backward onto me.. good thing it was a smallish horse,, I didn't get hurt..

I liked riding bare back in the winter .. it is a lot warmer on the body.. not so good if it is snowing, though.. then the snow melts and your legs and arse get soaked ..

I met Annie while I was riding.. I let her swing up behind me and told her to hold on. she did, and never let go ..
