Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I want to build some sort of covered area for a small part of my run for this winter. Unfortunately the barn sides are cement. We have been trying to brainstorm ways of doing this and I am wondering about the following:

Could I build a "box" shape out of PVC and attach the plastic clear corrugated sheets to the top? I am guessing from barn to fence is about 8 ft and the width would need to be about 16-20 ft wide (need to measure) Have the "back" 4-5 ft taller and the "front" side shorter and hang out over the edge of the fencing to cause snow to slide off/outside of run? Thoughts? (if you can even understand what I am saying)

Angie,
You might see if KristiP can get her hubby to give some pointers on building with the corrugated clear sheets. their pen for their flock is topped with that
They built a frame and it has chicken wire on the sides but the entire top is the clear corrugated sheets.. it looks great.

Just a thought..
I have a name for our coop... Carol's chicken retirement centre (you have to make is look British so the chickens like it)... I took in a nice delaware a few months back and on Sunday I got a call from her former people.. they will be traveling alot this winter out of the country and wanted to know if I would like her old coop mates... well sure.. so now I have 2+ yr old delawares, Salmon Favs, and two buckeyes. on top of the other retirees I have I have 4 young hens and they aren't laying yet... every one else is either old, molting or not a hen.. LOL
Have a good night all!!

Good evening!

Dan! I love the coop name Carol. I wish I was heading into winter with 32 birds...I counted 33 geese the other day as they were parading past me...that is one down from usual. I kept 6 babies but did lose some during the summer to cars and other things.

I scored a bunch of building materials yesterday next door to my client's house...unfortunately when I went back today the Garbage men had already cleaned it up and it was gone! (Dam) I got a 2 piece wooden gate (mostly for the hardware), a few 6' 4x4s and a few 2x6 boards. Also a wheelbarow full of those patio cement paver things. The rest I couldnt get out of the pile without making a mess...now I am sorry! There were a few really large sheets of laticework that I could have used on my porch. I hate when people throw out "good stuff!" I hope you guys find what you need.

I had a nice surprise today...my naked neck that lays blue eggs just hatched a clutch! I saw her on top of a safe place in my shed and thought that she must have a clutch. On Saturday I thought that she was dead cause she was so still. Then she hopped off to eat. She had been sitting so long (too long I thought) so I shook a few of the eggs to see if they were rotten. They seemed solid...all so pretty blue! Today I saw she had at least 5 and was still sitting tight. Their little naked pink necks are so adorable! I wil try and get some picks tomorrow.

OK--I need to head off to bed. I was hoping my green tomato molasses would be done but it is still not syrup...guess I will turn it off for the night. I sure hope DH sleeps better tonight...I had to go into the other room cause he was snoring so hard!
Night all! TerriO

Selfish request here...friends that are also on facebook...can you go to the post I had from the NG library and vote for some of Morgan's posters...Frankenstein, three pumpkins and witch are in the lead...you can vote for up to three posters... I appreciate it. They will make it into a real poster if she wins.

Thanks

Finally able to post photos. Here's the 2 little Cochin Bantam babies.

This is what was done today on the coop, all walls are covered, the north end wasn't show in the photo as done but went back to work after the pic and it got too dark to take another photo. Only have the front above the patio doors, the upper door for the outside access to the nest boxes and the roof. Then to clean up the big mess of wood laying everywhere. I could almost live in it after I get the inside insulated.lol.

Here are the Blue Swedish ducks that escaped their pen lastnight and have found refuge in the pond. Sure are some happy duckies!

More shots of the WW, look at those fluffy white butts!

Also wanted to add, I put the shipped eggs in the bator yesterday. they arrived on Friday. Tonight I went to check them and one had already seeped out everywhere and looked close to exploding. Thankfully it hadn't and didn't get any fluids on the other eggs. Now anytime I've dealt with seeping its been with eggs I bought locally or from a friend when they sat out for some time and they didn't know how long. I've only had them seep after at least a week in the bator, not within about 26 hours. Can anything chime in on this? I'm thinking I got old eggs and pretty much got ripped off. I'm not going to make a big stink about it as I'll just not buy from them again.

Hi All!

Gee Sclark, sucks about those eggs. Those WWs are beautiful!

I got some solar lights to put out by the coop... hope they help. Rudy goes out a lot at night now too.

Night All!

good morning,

thinking I might dig some potatoes today..
Annie already dug about half of them,, planted 60 pounds of seed, have way more than that dug already,, plenty for us for awhile..

not much to write about today..

I don't know if I mentioned this,, but Kalib moved into his own appt.. he left his cat behind,, I made the mistake of feeding it and being nice to it.. It is a fixed female, no claws,, and it does not meow.

follows me wherever I go in the house,,

she is content to sit on the arm of my computer chair while I play ..
yes she is a calico,, and no, she does not have a name,, whe doesn't need a name, I am never going to call her to come, and she probably wouldn't come if called anyhow..
