How hard is it to dry pluck a young rooster? I only have 2 that I am going to butcher and I am feeling too lazy to heat a big pot of water for only 2 birds. If it is going to be to difficult, then I will have to just suck it up and pull out the big pot and heat all that water...
I am waiting now for the molt to end, too many pin feathers right now but their tail feathers are just starting to come in so not too long I think.
instead of dry plucking them, why not just go ahead and skin them ? you don't need the skin on anyway to cook them ..
Slit them length ways from tail to neck down the back.. then start peeling..
Go on U Tube for more ideas on how to skin a chicken..

OR, bring them here when we are butchering, probably next week..

I heat up the water on the turkey deep fryer .. I have never deep fried a turkey.

It was nice working in the shop today.. I got the housing built for the sprocket and chain,, next I will mount the bearing blocks and center the shafts ..

So far i have not used even one nail in this project.. all glue and dowels ..
I will be taking more pictures as I go along.. although I still cannot send any, yet..

Hi All!

Nothing new, although I'm looking for 6-8 egg layers.... I need more eggs! Found someone local, waiting on a price.

Night All!

No Packer Sunday to everyone. Enjoy again another nice weather day. Depends on what you are using the birds for Wyo...No big deal to heat the kettle for a couple, if you need to leave the skin on....otherwise simply skin them.

Brats on the grill with ho-made kraut tonight.

These are my first homegrown chickens and I am looking forward to trying them. I am going to make beer can chicken with the biggest one, so I think I need the skin on. The roosters are going to be pretty tame by the time the pin feathers are grown out, I have been picking them up every day and checking to see how much the feathers have grown.

They are pushing the hens away from the food and chasing the smaller Brown egg layers around the coop, so they gotta go soon.

I found that the extra roo's are always tender when roasted, or of course used for soup....Yep, the skin has to stay on for beer can chicken...expect a less tender bird than the store bought ones or the home raised cornish cross though...good luck..just sayin' is all.. bigz

Hi All!

wyo... don't forget to let that bird rest until the rigger goes. Just because you're going to steam him in beer, doesn't make him drunk and tender. lol

Saw the beginning of the eclipse, it just got covered, then it got cloudy

Night All.

good morning,

I watched the eclipse until 9.45,, it never went completely black.. the mosquitoes were out full force. but I had a hoodie on so they could get only at my face.
I didn't want to miss this one,, the next one is eighteen years from now.. I'll be 91 and will probably be too busy to take the time to watch it..

had to tweak the sprockets a bit to make the chain fit. I forgot that you have to adjust the chain by two links, not one..

Wyo, bite the bullet and heat the water.. It is not really that bad ..

The mosquitoes are ravenous! They attack in droves out in the garden in the middle of the day!

@jvls1942 Ok, Jim, you win. I will haul out the turkey fryer and heat some water for the plucking. Looks like 3 sagitta roos will be getting a 140 degree bath in a couple of days.
